Canadian rose varieties are distinguished by interesting colors, lush blooms and spicy aromas. Rose Henry Kelsey fell in love with many summer residents due to its easy care, abundant flowering and the possibility of using the flower in landscape design.

Breeding history of the variety

Rose Henry Kelsey was bred in 1984 in Canada by the Svejda breeding company under the leadership of Isabella Preston. The rose got its name in honor of the merchant-traveler Henry Kelsey, who went from Great Britain to Canada in order to explore new territories rich in resources.

The culture belongs to the group of climbing scrub plants. Suitable for creating hedges, looks harmonious in single or group plantings.

Description of the variety

The bushes are vigorous, with powerful and thick shoots, grow up to 200-250 cm. The crown is semi-spreading, up to 150 cm wide. The leaves are medium-sized, lanceolate. The surface of the leaf plate is green, glossy, with small notches along the edge. Small sharp thorns are present on the shoots.

The flowers are medium in size, 6-8 cm in diameter. The rosette of the bud is ovoid, and the flower shape is usually flat-cupped. The main shade of flowers is red. The color of the bud can be dark red with a raspberry undertone, and the color of the petals inside is usually dark pink, with bright yellow stamens. In terms of saturation, the color is intense, there is no variegation.

The flower type is moderately double. The number of petals is 25-28. All buds are located in multi-flowered inflorescences, 5-15 pieces per stem. The aroma of the flowers is of medium intensity, there are spicy notes in the scent.

Advantages and disadvantages

Among the advantages, they note abundant flowering, which occurs in several waves. With proper planting and good care, the plant is practically not exposed to diseases and attacks of insects. The variety has high resistance to low temperatures, therefore, the crop can be grown in almost any territory of Russia.

Among the disadvantages, there is too rapid growth of shoots. Therefore, support is important for the plant so that the stems do not spread on the ground under their own weight. In order for a culture to grow well, it is necessary not only to choose the right planting site, but also to know the composition of the soil.

Flowering features

Rose Henry Kelsey is a re-flowering plant with a flowering period from June to September. It occurs in several waves. The very first wave, which occurs in June, is considered the most abundant and intense. Subsequent waves will be less voluminous and shorter.

In order for bud formation to occur faster, the faded buds must be cut off immediately.

Use in landscape design

Since the culture is both scrub and climbing, there are an unlimited number of ideas for landscape design. The rose can be used to create hedges by planting along the paths in the park or on the site. The plant is planted next to arches and gazebos. In this case, there is no need to select a support for the shoots, while the plant will not be in direct sunlight.

The rose is well suited for both single beds and group plantings. You can create compositions with other roses or flowers, as well as with mixborders.

Landing

The variety is not rare, so it is easy to get it from a nursery or a specialty store. But before buying, you need to inspect the seedling. The rose should be 1.5-2 years old. A plant with a well-developed root system should be chosen, and several thick stiff shoots should be present on the bush. The kidneys should be dormant and undamaged. The root collar should be about 8 mm.

The best time to plant a rose is from April to September. The chosen location should be well lit by the sun. It is recommended to plant the plant to the south of any structure (arbor or arch). This is necessary so that at the time of the sun the bush has a small protection in the form of a shadow, then the petals with leaves will not be burned.

The soil should be loamy. Such soil retains moisture a little longer, but at the same time does not create much stagnation. The acidity should be no more than 5-6.5 pH. If the acidity is lower, then peat is added to the soil, and if it is higher, then dolomite flour or eggshells are added.

It is necessary to dig a hole 50 cm in diameter, its depth should be equal to the height of the root system plus 15 cm. If the rose was sold in a peat pot, then the seedling is planted with it. At the bottom of the hole, it is recommended to make drainage from pebbles or broken bricks 8 cm high. The earth around the bush is compacted and abundantly spilled with water.

Growing and care

You can plant a rose not only with seedlings, but also with germinated seeds. This method is complicated and is practiced only in the southern regions. But if you follow all the necessary measures correctly, then you can grow a Henry Kelsey rose using the seed method.

The seed growing algorithm is as follows.

  1. All seeds need to be stratified first, especially those that have been harvested by hand. The material is placed in a refrigerator for a day.
  2. Then everything is disinfected with a weak solution of potassium permanganate.
  3. The next step is to place all seeds 2 cm apart in peat containers and spill abundantly with water.
  4. As soon as the first shoots appear, it will be necessary to observe the watering regime. Do not moisten the soil too much. The optimum temperature for further germination is + 18-20 degrees.
  5. When the bushes grow up to 8 cm, they dive.

Culture follow-up should include:

  • watering;
  • top dressing;
  • loosening the soil;
  • preventive inspection of bushes and spraying;
  • pruning and shaping the bush;
  • preparation for winter.

Diseases and pests

The Henry Kelsey cultivar is often attacked by powdery mildew or black spot. To combat them, they choose spraying with fungicides with intervals between procedures of 2 weeks. For the prevention of recurrent disease, "Fitosporin" is used.
