Floribunda Geisha is an amazingly beautiful rose that many gardeners dream of having. And this is no accident, because at the moments of flowering, the rose is so abundantly strewn with flowers that the foliage is almost completely hidden behind them.
Description of the variety
Geisha is one of the greatest achievements of the German kennel Tantau in 2005. The unique flower also has other names, for example, Geisha, TANshei.
Dense bushes of the subspecies branch abundantly, show accelerated growth, but at the same time they are quite compact - up to 80 centimeters in height and up to 60 cm in width. The strong stems of the plant are covered with a large number of small thorns. The bright green shiny foliage gives the bushes additional decorative qualities.
The sizes of the flowers are average, the color does not differ in variegation. The roses are apricot-orange, the edges of the petals have a pink-red border. Small-flowered inflorescences on stems, 3-5 roses each. The graceful flowers are of the semi-double type, the diameter does not exceed 6 centimeters. The aroma is weak, very soft, light, with delicate floral notes.
Advantages and disadvantages
The pros of a Geisha are as follows:
beautiful flowers, the same, all as a selection;
interesting delicate color;
very abundant flowering, short breaks for budding;
smooth transitions of shades at different times of flowering;
compactness, thanks to which roses can be planted in flowerpots.
A rather weak aroma can be considered a relative disadvantage, but here each gardener has his own preferences. Not everyone likes odors that are too strong to attract insects. But the more serious disadvantages will be susceptibility to disease and not very good resistance to precipitation. During prolonged rains, some flowers may be damaged.
Flowering features
In the last days of May or early June, the first wave of flowering begins. Roses bloom very profusely, almost completely cover the bush. This is followed by a period of rest and a new stage begins. If the bushes are well looked after, then flowering will continue until the cold weather. These are usually three waves.
Use in landscape design
Floribunda Geisha looks most beautiful in the company of their own kind. These roses are usually planted in small groups to create a delicate rose garden. However, other varieties can also keep them company. For example, a light peach shade can be diluted with lilac, hot pink, and reds. In addition to open ground, Geisha are cultivated in containers. You can decorate the terrace with flowerpots, for example.
The variety is not very suitable for cutting: at the end of the first week, the roses lose their decorative appearance.
Growing regions
In the open field, the Geisha rose can be grown in warm zones of the country or in temperate climates. The middle lane, the North Caucasus, is not bad. If the conditions are more severe, then summer planting in containers with the possibility of bringing it into the house for the winter is recommended, or cultivation in a closed rose garden.
Landing
A geisha needs light, an open area is selected for her, with light air currents, but not piercing winds.Bushes are planted on flat terrain, hills and especially lowlands should be avoided.
It is better to prepare the soil for planting at least 2 weeks in advance. In no case should it be too clayey and sour. If there is no other earth, it is diluted with sand and lime. The size of the hole is no more than 40 cm, the same amount is dug into the depth. Planting is carried out on a cloudy day, in a well moistened in advance. The distance between the seedlings is 40 cm, and if it is planting in rows, then 0.6 meters are maintained between the latter.
Growing and care
When cultivating a Geisha rose on your site, it is worth remembering some of the features of flower care.
The variety is very poorly tolerated by the neighborhood with weeds. It is susceptible to pests, so any weeds must be immediately disposed of.
Geisha loves weekly watering with soft, settled water at room temperature. Water the bushes only as the soil dries up. Lack of moisture provokes a drop of flowers, excess - fungal ailments.
For spring dressings, a urea solution is suitable. It can be entered several times. Organic solutions can also replace this composition. In the middle of summer, nitrogen is completely abandoned, switching to mineral fertilizers for roses.
Improper pruning is the first reason for the lack of flowers on the bushes. One-year-old shoots are cut by 30% of the original length, and perennial ones are shortened so that about five eyes remain. If the branch has no buds at all, you can remove it. Blooming only a planted rose in the current season should not be allowed.
Usually a compact Geisha does not need support. But sometimes the bushes can start to slope due to the abundance of flowers. Then they can be tied up, there will be no harm from this.
Frost resistance and preparation for winter
Floribundas hibernate well if minimal training is provided. The endurance limit of the culture is -23 degrees of frost, when the temperature reaches -7 degrees, you can begin to cover them. Hilling of bushes is carried out with the help of peat or wood dust, then spruce branches are laid out: both near the roses and on top. Wire frames are placed between the bushes, covered with film. It is possible to open the shelter for ventilation in April, but it is permissible to completely remove them only when stable +10 degrees are reached.
Diseases and pests
Geisha is sick most often with improper watering or with prolonged precipitation. In such conditions, the flowers are affected by powdery mildew, black spot. There are a number of other fungal diseases, including rot. Due to the average resistance of the culture to such diseases, prevention must be carried out in advance. At the beginning of the growing season, roses are sprayed with Fitosporin, Topaz or other fungicides.
Pests appear mainly where there are a lot of weeds. The most common aphid. Sawflies and ticks are also not uncommon. All insects must be eliminated immediately using insecticides. If the summer is wet, and slugs have settled between the roses, then sprinkle the soil with crushed, but not too fine, egg shells.
Reproduction
The long-term practice of growing floribunda groups, including Geisha, shows that propagation by cuttings is the best option for this rose. Cuttings can be easily obtained after pruning, but it is best to harvest the material when the bushes are finished blooming. Under the right conditions, the cutting takes about 20 days to root, and it is best to cover it with a plastic bottle during this time.
Review overview
Geisha fell in love with many gardeners. She lived up to their expectations in terms of flowering, although almost everyone notes that her peduncles are thin and rather fragile, they will not interfere with support. The flowers look very beautiful, the peach color is unobtrusive, but at the same time decorative. However, gardeners say that it bears little resemblance to photographs from the Internet, processed in programs.
According to responses, the rose winters well and grows quickly in spring. But you need to constantly protect it from diseases. Another disadvantage is that roses are poorly cut. Despite the fact that the nursery promises to preserve all decorative qualities for 7 days or more, few have flowers that last at least 5-6 days.
