Breeding history of the variety
The variety was bred by Lens Rozen, originator from Belgium, in 1998. Created on the basis of another Lens variety - Rush.
It received its unusual name in honor of the city, which is located today in the territory of the country of Zaire. The proceeds from the sale of seedlings in the first two years after the release of the rose were fully invested in the development of health care in the region.
The variety is a success at exhibitions of roses, has collected gold awards at exhibitions in Switzerland (1998), in the Czech Republic (2000).
The Bukavu variety belongs to the group of musk roses, but by a number of characteristics it resembles a floribunda, therefore it is formally included in this group.
Description of the variety
Bushes are vigorous, spreading, up to 120-150 cm, with glossy, dark green foliage. The shape of the bush is almost round, in width it is about the same as in height.
The flowers are simple, up to 5-6 cm in diameter, very bright, carmine-red. The powerful illumination impression is enhanced by the white center, next to it, the rose-red color appears even fresher. Abundant bright yellow stamens are visible in the center. The petals are wide, with light waves. There can be up to 10 flowers on 1 stem. The variety is well self-cleaning.
After flowering, bright red fruits are formed, which are also very effective.
Flowers tolerate rain well, do not wither in the sun. The scent of the rose is almost imperceptible.

Flowering features
The cultivar is one of the first to bloom and continues to bloom until late autumn. Commercial descriptions often exaggerate the flowering possibilities of musk roses, the same situation with the Bukavu cultivar. In fact, the variety is re-flowering. There will be a break between the waves. But with good care, it can be so inconspicuous that the rose can indeed be classified as continuous flowering.
Use in landscape design
Unlike the first musk roses, the Bukavu variety does an excellent job with close-ups, the flowers look so rich. Thanks to the lush, fast-growing bush, the variety is very good in hedges, borders. Can be a soloist, looks great in groups. Beautiful on a trunk, easily overshadows other roses. Flowers of the Bukavu variety are catchy, but relaxed, easily combined with any other crops and are suitable for decorating gardens in any style. A good choice for a bright mixborder. Looks amazing with other roses, especially in the same range, although usually roses are difficult to combine. The variety is also suitable for a year-round or Japanese garden: red berries look beautiful against a background of snow and exposed branches. Suitable for cutting.
Landing
For a rose, choose a sunny, open place with loose, well-warmed soil. In the bright direct sun, the color of the petals can fade, so it is better to choose places with light shading at noon hours. Especially in regions with a contrasting, sharply continental climate. The soil must be nutritious, very well-drained. Too sandy soils are abundantly fertilized with compost. Sand or peat is added to clayey.
The variety is planted in planting pits 60 cm deep. The best time in the Middle Lane is April-May. Drainage is poured at the bottom of the pit, a layer of sand, at least 10 cm of compost or rotted manure. Roses are planted so that the grafting site is 3 cm below soil level.
Growing and care
Musk roses are unpretentious. And the Bukavu variety is even simpler and unassuming. Usually musk roses need to be tied up, Bukavu has a compact, spreading, but persistent bush. He does not need support.
Watering and feeding
Water as needed. Rose loves not damp, but not drying out soil. Therefore, watering varies depending on the weather. In dry summers, water at least 2 times a week. In any weather, by August, watering is gradually reduced so that the rose has time to prepare for winter. In September, watering is stopped completely.
Pruning
Pruning is essential for musk roses. Broken, damaged, dried branches are regularly removed, in spring the shoots are shortened by 1/3.
In order to get a continuous flowering rose, Bukavu bushes are pruned in time. As soon as the upper brush fades slightly, it is cut off. This stimulates lateral growth.
Frost resistance and preparation for winter
The variety belongs to the 6th zone of frost resistance, therefore, in the middle lane for the winter it needs to be covered. The branches of the variety are flexible, it is easy to tilt them to the ground. The bush is covered with spruce branches, from above you can install arcs or supports at a height of 20 cm above the ground, and additionally cover the plants with lutrasil.
Diseases and pests
The variety is very resistant to diseases and pests. For prophylaxis, the rose is periodically sprayed with ash infusion or "Fitosporin".
Reproduction
The variety propagates well by cuttings. For rooting, strong branches are chosen, cut off after the 1st wave of flowering.
Review overview
Russian flower growers highly appreciate the Bukavu variety. A rose may lack the grace that is usually expected from a rose, but if you need to create a long-lasting, succulent spot in a flower bed, along a path or against a wall, this is a request for it. Rose is completely unpretentious. It does not get sick even in areas that are too damp for roses, it tolerates cold or rainy summers in the Leningrad region well.
Flowers are not afraid of rain or heat, flowers do not deteriorate, do not dry out, their tips do not dry, do not fly around. The bush is wide, but does not need a garter. Someone blooms continuously, someone waves. There are single flowers in between the waves. It can show itself to bloom profusely in the first year after planting. It is growing, as promised, very quickly. By the end of the first year, a lush, rounded bush is obtained. Compared to other musk roses, it is one of the first to bloom and has the largest caps. A festive, light variety.
