Along with numerous novelties and exotic varieties of roses, there is a category of classic varieties that are always in demand and loved. These include the queen of roses Botero, a French selection, characterized by simple agricultural technology and high adaptive qualities.
Breeding history of the variety
Botero roses, representing the class of hybrid tea varieties, appeared thanks to the works of French breeders in 2003. Today the rose is included in the "Fragrances of Provence" collection. The author of the culture is the famous scientist Meilland. The rose is named after the Colombian sculptor F. Botero. Flowers are grown in different regions of Russia.
Description of the variety
The French rose is a compact shrub with erect and strong shoots, sparsely covered with sharp thorns. The shrub has abundant foliage with large dark green leaves with veins and a noticeable dullness. It is characteristic that the leaves grow evenly, along the entire length of the shoots.
The root system of a rod-type plant goes deep into the ground. The bush stretches up to 100-120 cm in height, and grows in width to 60-70 cm. Buds are formed both singly on the stems, and in small-flowered inflorescences, where up to 5 roses can be collected.
Advantages and disadvantages
Rosa Botero is famous not only for its beautiful shape, bright color, but also for many other advantages:
- moderate frost resistance (the plant tolerates temperature drops to -18-23 degrees);
- abundant flowering for 3-4 months;
- excellent tolerance to heavy rains;
- bright and intense aroma;
- sufficient immunity, capable of protecting against fungal infections with proper agricultural technology.
The disadvantages include a short second flowering, the appearance of burns on the petals in strong sunshine, as well as fastidiousness in the choice of the growing area.
Flowering features
The classic Botero variety is known for its long flowering, which lasts from the beginning of summer and ends at the end of September. Goblet buds located on succulent stems are endowed with a dark red color.
When blooming, the bud turns into a lush, densely doubled flower with a diameter of about 13 cm, with a dense structure, consisting of a huge number of velvety petals - 100-120 units. The color of the rose is strawberry-red or red-raspberry. Due to the wavy edges of the petals and their slight curling outward, the blossoming rose looks especially elegant and beautiful. In addition to its visual appeal, the flower emits a delicious aroma with hints of currant and fruit mix.
Use in landscape design
Often, pink bushes are planted in the center of a flower bed, garden or flower garden. The rose looks harmoniously in single plantings, as well as in an ensemble with other plants. Landscape designers recommend planting a Botero rose in a company with small purple, blue or white flowers.
In addition, the flower looks great with spruce plants. By planting many rose bushes in a row, you can get a low hedge. Some growers planted a French variety for cutting, since flowers can stand in a vase for a long time without losing their freshness and aroma.
Landing
Roses are usually planted in the first week of May, when the soil and air are warm enough. For planting, a leveled area is selected, where there is a lot of light and heat, and there is also a protective barrier against drafts. It is not recommended to plant bushes in lowlands where water and cold air accumulate. The best place will be a place where it is sunny in the morning and evening, and partial shade in the daytime.
The soil for a rose should be light, fluffy, fertile, with a good drainage system, breathable and non-acidic. It is worth remembering that the root of the plant is deeply buried, so the groundwater must pass deeply - 120-200 cm.
Growing and caring
Flowers are cultivated by cuttings, the rhizomes of which are pretreated with growth stimulants. For planting, holes are prepared with a depth of 50-60 cm, where drainage from gravel, small stone or crushed stone is laid, as well as a layer of organic fertilizers up to 10 cm thick. Next, fertilizers are sprinkled with garden soil and a pink seedling is planted.
It is important that the root collar of the cutting is located 3-4 cm below the surface of the earth. After completion, the pink plantings are watered abundantly with warm or settled water, and the soil is carefully tamped. It is recommended to place up to 4 plants per 1 m2.
Caring for pink shrubs is simple, it is enough to water, fertilize, weed, loosen and mulch the soil, prevent diseases, and also cover for the winter. In addition, in the first year, you need to remove the buds until the end of August, which will ensure abundant flowering in the next season.
Watering and feeding
Water the bushes every week. One plant requires 15-20 liters of settled (spring) water. In a too dry and hot period, if a crust appears on the soil, watering can be increased up to twice a week. Mulching will help keep moisture in the soil.
For good development, plants require two feeding. Nitrogen-containing complexes are introduced in the spring, and phosphorus-potassium fertilizers in the summer. The best time to fertilize is when buds form and re-bloom.
Pruning
Pruning is done twice. In early spring, frozen twigs are removed, and the shoots are shortened. In autumn, sanitary pruning is performed, in which the bush is cleared of dry and diseased branches, and also thinned out. During the flowering period, the wilted buds should be cut off.
Frost resistance and preparation for winter
Growing roses in the southern strip of Russia, you can get by with mulching the bushes for the winter using spruce branches. In other regions, the shelter of the bushes is required. It is carried out at stable temperatures of -7-8 degrees, not earlier. A solid frame is installed over the cut rose bushes (height 30-40 cm above the plants) and burlap, agrofibre is pulled, and a layer of film on top. In March-April, airing should be started, moving the material away for 20-30 minutes daily.
Diseases and pests
The immunity of the variety is average, capable of protecting against many fungal infections - powdery mildew, rust, black spot. It is extremely rare for pink plantings to be attacked by insects - green rose aphid, spider mite, leafworm and scale insects. This happens in conditions of increased dampness, stagnant moisture, prolonged rains, as well as in violation of the basic rules of agricultural technology.
