When choosing hybrid tea roses, gardeners most often prefer options with large flowers. This is exactly what Big Purple will be - a gorgeous double rose of the old selection.
Breeding history of the variety
Big Purple has a very interesting creation story. While other varieties are mostly bred by experienced breeders, this one was created by a simple secretary who was very fond of these beautiful flowers. His name is Pat Stevens, and in the 1980s he did paperwork in a rose community in New Zealand.
Pat independently thought about the image of the rose that he would like to receive. He was looking for a way to create it for a long time, and finally he did it. A beautiful rose with raspberry-purple petals was presented to the world, and a simple secretary at the moment became famous, because the flower looked so beautiful that it seemed as if it was created by a breeder with many years of experience. Rose participated in exhibitions and even received one of the best awards.
Description of the variety
Vigorous Big Purple bushes grow straight and fairly compact. Depending on the external climatic conditions, they can reach heights from 1.2 to 1.75 meters, the girth of the plant is 100 centimeters. The green-brown stems are covered with impressively sized dark green foliage and sparse thorns. The edges of the foliage are all in small notches, slightly drooping.
The flowers of the Big Purple rose are large, cup-shaped, densely double. Only one flower specimen grows on each stem, containing up to 45 delicate petals. The rose has an interesting and peculiar color. In warm weather without precipitation, the flowers shimmer with shades of raspberry and dark purple. As they wither, they become almost purple. If you plant the rose in a shady location, you can expect purple buds from the start. The buds open rather slowly, as if trying to prolong the impression. They give off a very strong, fruity aroma.
Advantages and disadvantages
Big Purple has both strengths and weaknesses. Let's start with the first ones:
it is a large-flowered variety, perfect for both cutting and garden decoration;
the shade of the petals, which changes depending on the season and conditions, is admired by absolutely every person;
the rose blooms for a rather long time, slowly and smoothly dissolves the petals;
the plant gradually increases the intensity of the aroma, which at the end of the dissolution becomes rich and fruity;
Big Purple rose is relatively unpretentious in comparison with other varieties, it is not afraid of hot summer;
the bush has a strong resistance to fungal diseases.
Let's list the negative points:
flowers do not open in the rain;
the sun almost always causes the petals to burn out quickly;
by the end of flowering the bush “bald”, there are very few peduncles;
the full beauty of flowers can be appreciated only with incomplete disclosure - when the bud opens and stays on the bush for a couple of days, it will quickly lose its decorative appearance.
Flowering features
Flowering periods at Big Purple are wave-like. In late May or early June, the first flowers appear.After flowering, they are replaced by others, but the breaks between the waves are very noticeable. By the end of summer, two to three times fewer flowers appear, the process is declining, and finally ends in September.
Use in landscape design
First of all, Big Purple roses are grown for cutting. But while they have not yet been cut, the garden is also decorated very beautifully. Rose bushes often grow near houses, fences and various buildings; they can be interesting to decorate the entrance to the gazebo or to the terrace. Big Purple is often combined with conifers and other crops. This variety looks good next to peach, white, yellow and orange flowers.
Growing regions
This hybrid tea rose can be used to decorate plots by summer residents from the Moscow region and southern regions. It is not recommended for planting in areas with rainy and cool summers.
Landing
Big Pearl takes root best if you buy a seedling with a closed root system. For planting, gardeners are advised to choose April, but you can also plant in March, May, autumn. The seedling is planted in a hole filled with a drainage layer and part of a fertile soil mixture. After placing the sample, the substrate is poured, the inoculation site should be deepened, 3 centimeters will be enough. After a few days, when the soil settles, you will need to add another small layer.
Growing and caring
Big Purple loves warm and dry climates, sunny places. There should be a shadow on the rose planting zone at noon, this is very important. The site should be ventilated, but not ventilated at all times. Low-lying areas are categorically unsuitable, as are sandstone soils. The soil at the place of planting roses should be loose, fertilized, without excess acidity.
Flowers should be cared for, which will include:
regular watering with heated water;
taking care of the soil is not only weeding, but also constant loosening;
making dressings;
cropping by mode;
spraying against diseases and pests;
construction of a shelter for the winter.
Watering and feeding
It is enough to irrigate the plants once a week. If drought is established, you can increase it up to two times, but not more often. At the end of August, watering is sharply reduced, and by the end of September they are completely excluded from the leaving schedule.
It will be necessary to feed the variety several times. It is noteworthy that Big Purple almost does not need nitrogen, like other roses. But this is if the soil is fertile and pre-fertilized with organic matter. In the case of such a substrate, only phosphorus (spring) and potassium (summer) can be fed.
Pruning
The first flowering of a newly planted rose cannot be allowed, but in August a couple of flowers are still left for luxurious flowering later. The rose grows quite densely, often intertwined with other bushes, so it must be thinned out. Medium pruning is carried out for all bushes, including leaving 2-4 buds. A strong shearing is carried out to rejuvenate old plants and stimulate the growth of newly planted ones. Do not forget about sanitary procedures.
Frost resistance and preparation for winter
With the advent of cold weather, the rose is cut and spud. To do this, you can take a simple garden soil, as well as humus, peat substrate. If you want to do without pruning, then the shoots will have to be bent to the ground. Spruce branches are placed on the top of the bushes.
Big Purple according to the USDA classification is referred to the 6th zone in terms of cold resistance. Cold snaps from –18 to –23 degrees Celsius are permissible for the variety.
Diseases and pests
For Big Purple, rose diseases are not dangerous: she simply is not affected by them, despite the fact that this is an old selection. But insects are very fond of the strong scent of flowers. Bronzes, leaf rollers, aphids are just a small list of parasites that can become a gardener's headache. Therefore, preventive treatment of bushes should become part of the daily practice of growing this variety.
Review overview
Big Purple is usually well received. Summer residents are ready to forgive a lot for chic double flowers with a heady aroma. Some people buy special umbrellas for them to protect from the sun. So the roses bloom even brighter. It is noted that the older the bush, the shorter breaks between flowering it needs.Bushes reproduce well by cuttings; in a few years, the entire plot can be planted. But summer residents insist on the need for pest control. Moreover, these are not only popular garden parasites, but also grasshoppers eating buds.
