Spray roses, patio roses - living bouquets standing on a flower bed. The group appeared relatively recently: the first specimens were registered in the second half of the last century. They gained popularity as rapidly as the information about them spread. Arrow Folies (synonym for Arrow Folies), one of the finest representatives of the spray group, with an interesting color and wonderful appearance.
Breeding history of the variety
The originators of the variety are American breeders Zary and Keith W. The rose was officially registered in 2002.
Description of the variety
Spray rose has a slightly sprawling shrub with straight, stable shoots. The height of the bush is from 60-70 cm, however, many gardeners note the height of their pets is much higher: up to 100-120 cm. The shoots have wide and hard thorns. Leaves of a dark green color have a leathery dense structure and a strong gloss. The edges of the leaf plate are speckled with small notches, the veins are clearly visible, the seamy part has a less intense shade than the front.
The variety is bicolor. The buds are painted in a palette of cherry shades. In full disclosure, the flower makes an amazing impression with a variegated color. On the red petal with a purple undertone, light strokes of white and cream shades stand out graphically. The inflorescences are composed of 5-10 flowers with a diameter of 4-6 cm each. The bush exudes a delicate and unobtrusive pleasant aroma.
Advantages and disadvantages
Arrow Folies has undoubted advantages and a minimum of disadvantages.
The advantages of the variety:
unpretentiousness;
unusually strong immunity;
abundant and long-term fruiting;
the formation of peduncles until the end of autumn;
resistance to adverse weather conditions;
a sophisticated scent reminiscent of a French perfume;
a wide range of applications in landscape design, as well as the possibility of container growing.
Of the shortcomings, a discreet aroma is noted, however, many roses of other groups do not have it at all, and this disadvantage can be considered conditional.
Flowering features
An amazing feature of the Arrow Folies rose is considered to be continuous, abundant, intense flowering, due to which the green mass is almost lost under the mass of bright buds.
Use in landscape design
The variety is widely used in single plantings, in group compositions, in mixborders and border edging. This variety's patio rose works well with blue hues such as lavender, cornflowers, and perennial shrubs.
Landing
For planting in USDA zone 6 (from -18 to -23 degrees Celsius), areas with a good level of lighting are chosen, but at the same time protected from constant drafts and cold winds. Burnout in the sun Arrow Folies is not noted, so she quite copes with the solo role. Fertile soil should be of a neutral acidity level, loose, breathable, rich in humus and organic content.
When preparing the planting pit, care should be taken to create a drainage layer of pebbles, gravel or fine broken bricks. The optimal hole size: 45x45 cm, the distance between the holes depends on the use in landscape design.If this is the creation of a border, then the pits are placed closer than in a mixborder, where many different plants are collected.
The excavated soil is enriched with organic matter (manure, humus, compost), coarse river sand, peat, complex mineral specialized fertilizers. When planting a seedling, the grafting site is left under the surface of the ground. The optimal time for planting is autumn. Autumn plants have time to grow a certain amount of root mass before the onset of winter cold weather and in summer they begin the growing season along with all the plants in the garden. Saplings planted in spring take time to adapt and build up the root system. The lag in flowering will be at least half a month, but later the bush will level out and become a full-fledged specimen.
Growing and care
After planting, caring for a patio rose consists of watering, weeding, loosening, feeding, pruning and preparing for the winter period.
The rose needs regular watering, especially in hot weather, but irrigation should only be at the root so as not to flood the leaves and buds. The most correct solution would be to organize drip irrigation. One root accounts for up to 8 liters of warm water. The soil should be slightly moist, but without stagnant swamp, so moistening is carried out as needed.
Loosening is carried out the next day after each watering in order to prevent the formation of a dense earth crust and saturate the soil with oxygen.
Weeding removes weeds from the crop that compete for nutrients.
For the entire growing season, roses are fed several times with mullein infusion. In addition, nitrogen fertilizers are applied in early spring, potassium-phosphorus compounds in summer, potash preparations and humus in the root zone in autumn.
Sanitary pruning is carried out in early spring, removing old, diseased and frozen shoots. During formative pruning, adult shoots are shortened by several buds, protruding and too old stems are removed.
The rose should be covered during the winter frosts. To do this, the bushes are cut at a height of 30-40 cm, the remaining leaves and buds are removed, spud and covered with burlap. Spruce branches and agrofibre are put on top.
Diseases and pests
The variety has a strong immunity and is practically not susceptible to traditional enemies: powdery mildew, black spot and others. As a preventive measure, in the spring, plantings are treated with fungicides. Insecticides are used in pest control.
Reproduction
Rose Arrow Folies are propagated in several ways:
cuttings;
seeds;
dividing an adult bush;
vaccination.
Growing a rose from seeds is laborious, time-consuming and does not guarantee the desired result. Dividing a bush can lead to the death of the entire plant. For grafting, you must have a full graft and a suitable stock. The vegetative method is more reliable and, with the proper skill, will allow you to get good planting material. At the same time, parental qualities are fully preserved. The easiest and most reliable way to obtain planting material is to purchase seedlings from certified nurseries.
