One of the most beautiful plants, which is often used to decorate garden and backyard plots, is the rose. Even if the grower does not have a rose garden, everyone wants to add such a chic touch to the overall ensemble. The Harlequin rose is a very showy plant with large flowers and belongs to the climbing type. It will not work to grow it at home, open ground is needed. This rose is very beautiful and has a luxurious aroma. It has no subspecies and analogues: the plant is unique.

Description of the variety

Florists owe the creation of this species to German breeders who bred the variety in 1986. The bush grows very actively, this is also its big plus. After pruning, the rose grows even more intensively, the height varies within 220-280 cm, the diameter is 200 cm.There are a number of visual characteristics of the shrub that do not allow it to be confused with other varieties:

  • dense growth, very powerful, dense and strong shoots, growing upward, actively forming;
  • there is a lot of foliage, it is small, the skin is smooth, the color is dark green;
  • on the shoot, both single and group inflorescences are formed in an amount of up to 5 pcs.;
  • the color of the bud is reddish-pink, the flower is closer to cream, but the edges remain with red and pink;
  • after blooming, the flower brightens slightly;
  • the shape of a bud resembles a glass, a flower - a bowl;
  • the size of the flowers is large, the diameter ranges from 8-10 cm;
  • there is a moderate terry, there are a lot of petals: from 25 or more;
  • The aroma is very strong, includes notes of rose hips, fruits, generally sweet.

Advantages and disadvantages

The plant has a number of advantages that make it in demand among flower growers of different levels:

  • excellent frost resistance, which allows the plant to be spread and planted in different regions;
  • long-term abundant flowering up to cold weather;
  • the highest decorativeness.

As for the shortcomings, they are very conditional, for example, it is necessary to cut the plant so that the shrub has an aesthetic shape.

Flowering features

The great advantage of this variety of roses is its long time and rich flowering. The breaks are almost imperceptible, since some inflorescences do not have time to fade, as new ones are already formed. In the period from the first month of summer to frost, the shrub pleases with its beautiful appearance. Of course, it is very important to choose the right place and carry out care activities. Another distinctive feature of the bloom is its luxurious aroma, pleasant and tangible.

Use in landscape design

If you like bright colors or your area needs an expressive accent, this rose variety is perfect. For all its aesthetics, it is not particularly whimsical, it blooms very abundantly. Therefore, they can safely decorate some not too expressive area of the garden or flower garden. The harlequin is great on its own, complements groups well, and is suitable for creating live-type hedges.

Landing

The main thing is to choose a suitable site, as this rose prefers well-lit places and the nutrient composition of the soil. Good drainage is required. Planting is usually carried out in the spring, but in the southern regions it is recommended to set aside autumn time for this.It is enough 14-20 days before the onset of frost for the seedling to get stronger. The planting procedure itself corresponds to the general recommendations for roses:

  1. a hole up to 60 cm is formed;
  2. part of the nutrient soil mixture is introduced, on which the seedling is located;
  3. the remaining soil is poured out and watered abundantly.

You should not plant the Harlequin on an area where roses of any kind have already grown earlier.

Growing and care

Agricultural technology also has nothing out of the ordinary, all procedures are standard, but have their own characteristics.

  • Moisturizing. Since the roots of all climbing roses are very close to the surface, there is a danger of drying out. The harlequin needs to be watered in a drought, otherwise the rose will die. Regularity of hydration - every 3 or 4 days. The bucket is poured onto the bush. It is best to cover the surface of the soil near the trunk to minimize drying out. For this, peat, sawdust are used.
  • Fertilizer. For active growth, this variety requires regular fertilization. Complex mineral compounds are applied during the entire growing season, even in autumn, for better preparation for winter.
  • Pruning. In order for the bush to be aesthetic, neat, and also in order to enhance growth and abundance of flowering, it is important to prune in time. In the spring, all damaged and dried shoots are removed. The shrub can periodically be completely renewed; for this, shoots are cut to line 2 or 3 buds.
  • Transfer. This procedure is carried out only in spring in not too sunny weather. The bush is cut to half a meter in height or slightly lower. Then a transplant is carried out, after which the bush must be watered abundantly.
  • Preparing for winter. Despite its resistance to cold weather, it is still better to cover the plant immediately after the temperature with a negative value is established. Depending on the region, this could be November or December. Previously, you should not cover roses, it is necessary that they stay in the cold without shelter for at least a couple of nights. This will provide them with the necessary hardening and the plants will overwinter more easily. The shelter is organized by mulching the trunk circle and textile fabric, for example, burlap.

Diseases and pests

Harlequin is famous for its good immunity. But there are pests and ailments that can negatively affect the development of the plant.

  • Spider mite. If you notice a cobweb on the foliage, you need to treat it with a soap solution.
  • Aphid. Wormwood infusion copes with this pest, which is regularly sprayed. This can be done for prevention.
  • Cicadas. This insect is very afraid of soap solution, therefore it is recommended to use this particular agent for processing.

As for diseases, rust, powdery mildew and gray rot will be among the most dangerous. They are most often caused by prolonged unfavorable weather conditions, increased watering. First of all, it is necessary to change the moisture regime and immediately use fungicidal-type chemical compositions when the first symptoms appear.

Reproduction

The rose of this variety propagates in only one way - by cuttings. All other methods for the Harlequin are decidedly inappropriate. The stalk is formed during the flowering period of the bud, you need to cut it off until the flower has faded. Cuttings with a greenish base are suitable for growing, avoid completely lignified seedlings. The cut is carried out at an angle, from the end of the stem it is necessary to retreat below a couple of centimeters and cut there. The diameter of the cutting is up to 1 cm, the number of internodes is up to 4.

After making a cut, the shoot is cleaned of needles, leaves, the cut from the bottom is qualitatively cleaned. It is necessary to hold the cut in a solution of potassium permanganate for about a quarter of an hour, then it is dipped in hot wax. Before the rooting procedure, the shoot is kept in a root stimulator.Planting is carried out in a hole up to 15 cm, then the cutting is watered with a manganese composition and covered with plastic. After rooting, the greenhouse is removed.
