Breeding history of the variety
The new rose was presented by Meilland nursery in 2008. The breeding work lasted for about 20 years.
Description of the variety
Compact rose bushes with bright green leaves reach a height of 80-150 cm and a width of 60-80 cm. They are distinguished by an active set of growth. The leaves on the bushes are large and dull, very decorative in appearance. The stems are strong and strong, easily holding large corollas.
The flowers are large, resembling a peony, densely double, with a large number of petals. The average diameter of the calyx is 10-13 cm. On each stem, 1 flower is formed with rich pink, bright petals.
This rose variety has a strong aroma with pronounced citrus notes, hints of fruits and berries. The smell is persistent, oily. The aroma also traces the woody-green notes of cypress, verbena.
Advantages and disadvantages
This rose variety has very good rain resistance. Both the buds and the fully opened corollas retain their decorative effect even with heavy rainfall. Roses are also very resistant to heat, they are not afraid of the scorching sun rays. Other advantages of the Anton Chekhov variety include:
drought resistance;
attractive bush shape;
abundance of re-flowering;
strong aroma at any time of the day;
preservation of varietal characteristics;
lifespan up to 25 years;
pure color without variegation;
resistance to falling of petals in the cut.
There are practically no drawbacks to this French breeding miracle. The only thing worth considering: the difference in names, because of which it can be difficult to immediately determine whether a seedling belongs to the desired variety.
Flowering features
Rose bushes of the Anton Chekhov variety are covered with flowers from July to October, until the very frost. The buds are formed abundantly. Flowering is repeated, its intensity slightly decreases between the main waves.
Use in landscape design
Luxurious hybrid tea rose Anton Chekhov has perfectly established itself as a garden plant. The lush flowers stand beautifully when cut, gradually revealing their full beauty. When grown on boles, this rose is most often placed as a specimen, with an emphasis on it. The variety is perfect for use in hedges, gazebos and front gardens.
Growing regions
I successfully cultivate this variety in most regions of Russia and Ukraine. With the right choice of stock, Anton Chekhov grows even in Siberia and the Urals.
Landing
It is recommended to place the rose Anton Chekhov in the sun, in well-lit areas. It is better to choose plants on a wild or cultivated rosehip rootstock to increase frost resistance. The soil is required loose and fertile.A hole 50-60 cm deep is dug under a seedling aged 2-3 years.
In the process of planting, a small mound is poured inside, along which the root system spreads. The rose itself is held at the base of the graft, the earth must be carefully compacted.
Growing and caring
In the rose garden, Anton Chekhov does not have to pay much attention. The plant is periodically pruned, watered without waterlogging. Top dressing is also carried out regularly, up to 3 times during the season. Nitrogen fertilizers should not be abused, especially at the flowering stage. It is better to give preference to foliar complexes containing potassium and phosphorus.
Pruning
Plants require moderate sanitary pruning.
Frost resistance and preparation for winter
Shelter for this variety of roses for the winter is required only in cold climates. If winter temperatures do not drop below -18 ... 23 degrees Celsius, the plant is able to cope without it. The overall frost resistance of the variety is assessed as high.
Diseases and pests
For resistance to typical diseases of culture, the rose Anton Chekhov managed to receive prestigious awards. It is suitable for organic gardening without the use of pesticides. Possesses high resistance to powdery mildew and black spot.
Review overview
Rosa Anton Chekhov managed to acquire many fans in Russia and Ukraine. According to gardeners, the variety is fully consistent with the declared characteristics. It is extremely resistant to all adverse influences, it winters well in the middle lane, practically does not require preventive spraying against diseases and pests. There are especially many positive reviews about the scent of the flower, which has collected a complex range of fresh citrus and sweet fruity notes. Its summer residents unanimously evaluate it as excellent, very resistant both in cut and on a bush.
The flowers are easily confused with peonies due to their large size and abundance of petals. Lush pink buds open gradually, the shape of the flower also delights the owners. The deep cupped outlines of the rose are very popular with lovers of retro varieties. Additional volume is given to the flower by the darker color of the outer side of the petals.
There were no deficiencies in the variety. The only thing that raises concerns is the short life of a flower on a bush. It lasts only 2-3 days, then they fall off.
