Rosa Engagement is a charming variety that combines the virtues of several groups. The rose was bred in 1969 by John Patterson, an originator from the United States.
Description of the variety
The variety belongs to the group of hybrid tea roses. Engagement is a typical representative of the group. A bush with a vertical growth pattern can reach 100-120 cm in height, up to 60-80 cm in width. The foliage is large and abundant, dark green.
The flowers are medium or densely double, rather large, up to 10 cm in diameter, chiseled classical shape, for which the group of hybrid tea roses is so valued. The Angazhement variety has a fairly high center, the flowers are round, wide, the petals are laid in a bowl, the edge is noticeably bent. The color is very delicate, coral or pink, contrasting beautifully with the dark foliage. There is a delicate faint aroma.
Advantages and disadvantages
Pros of the variety:
- delicate marshmallow shade;
- a beautiful bush with strong branches not prone to falling apart;
- feels good in partial shade;
- long and rich flowering.
Cons of the variety:
- in zones below 6, shelter is required for the winter;
- the structure of the petals is quite delicate, the flowers can suffer from rain;
- by the end of flowering, unattractive red spots appear on the petals;
- weak aroma.
There is conflicting data on endurance. In the official descriptions, the variety is declared as the owner of average immunity, the year of breeding of the variety also speaks of this: the older it is, the more capricious. But the reviews indicate the unpretentiousness and fairly good health of the plant.
Flowering features
The rose is re-blooming, but the flowers last for a long time, the dissolution is long, so the break between the waves is invisible.
Use in landscape design
The rose looks great as a single bush. The plant is compact, but powerful, with straight neat stems, dense foliage. Also, the rose is good in group plantings, along paths and lawns, fits perfectly into solemn garden styles. The Angazhement variety is actively used for cutting.
Landing
Rose loves sunny, open places. But thanks to the dark and large foliage, it can show excellent results in places with partial shade, for example, where there is only 5 hours of bright sun per day.
The place should be calm, near buildings, fences, larger plants are desirable. The soil is fertile and very well-drained non-acidic loam or sandy loam. If the region is cold and frequent rains are possible, it is better to grow roses in even looser sandy soil.
Growing and care
The variety needs classic care: removing weeds, watering, loosening, frequent fertilizing, removing dead buds, pruning, preventive treatments from pests and shelter for the winter. It is advisable to cut the first buds of the Angazhement rose so as not to deplete the plant.
Watering and feeding
Flowers are not very resistant to rain: delicate petals, especially the outer ones, can suffer from dampness. It is better to water the bushes at the root, without touching the flowers. It is better to irrigate abundantly, but once a week. An important nuance - it is better to water not in the evening, when the temperature drops, but in the morning: this reduces the risks of developing diseases. Watering must be reduced by the end of summer.The plant must have time to prepare for winter. Before the shelter for the winter, water-charging irrigation is carried out: 30-50 liters are applied under the plant.
Like all roses, the cultivar loves feeding. In the spring they feed them with nitrogenous fertilizers, in the summer they make potassium-phosphorus fertilizers. Roses love organic-rich soil. If the soil is initially poor, you can water a weak mullein solution weekly.
Pruning
Rosa Angazhement grows as a beautiful bush, does not tend to fall apart, but loves moderate formative pruning, responds with branching, blooms more abundantly. Sanitary pruning is carried out at any time of the year. Old bushes are greatly shortened to stimulate the growth of new young shoots. With a spring haircut, 2-3 eyes are kept, with autumn shoots they are pruned quite a bit.
Frost resistance and preparation for winter
The frost resistance zone of the variety is sixth, but in fact the plant feels best in the climate of zone 5 (Kiev, southern Russia). If the frosts in the region fall below -15 ° C, it is imperative to cover. In the middle lane, the rose is covered in late October or early November. The stems are cut or bent, if they are flexible enough, sprinkled with any breathable material or several layers of lutrasil.
The layer of sawdust or needles mulch should be at least 15-20 cm. Before sending for the winter, all leaves should be removed: pathogens can hibernate on them. Everything around the bush should be clean. In some cases, it is even useful to replace the topsoil with a fresh mixture of humus and earth.
Diseases and pests
Powdery mildew and black spot resistance are average. The variety will benefit from preventive treatments.
- Fitosporin-M. Biological product, which is a concentrate of hay bacillus that naturally dwells in the soil. Suppresses the activity of pathogens. Can be used for spraying and spilling soil.
- "Baktofit". Analogue of "Fitosporin" in composition and use.
- Trichodermin. A biological product containing an antagonist fungus Trichoderma, which fights against pathogens of root rot, rust, various types of spot and powdery mildew. Suitable for processing the plant itself and the soil under it.
- Ash. Ash infusion is a concentrate of useful microelements, while it has disinfecting and antiseptic properties. You can use powder for dusting the leaves and stems, the infusion is used for spraying and watering.
- Garlic. For 1 liter of water, 30 g of chopped garlic is required. Insist 1 day, filter and spray the leaves from 2 sides. Helps with the first signs of illness.
The most effective fungicides are Topaz, Skor, Fundazol. 3-4 treatments per season are enough. The downside is that chemicals do not fit into the concept of an eco-garden.
Review overview
There are few reviews, but everyone is enthusiastic. Long-lasting rose, flowers are unexpectedly persistent, hold well during periods of rain or scorching sun. The plant is very tenacious, but sometimes it gets sick. A special admiration is the splendor of the flower. The variety has a very beautiful arrangement of petals. The color is also appreciated: it is described as soft coral, pink-peach, light salmon, the color of dawn.
The shade is really impressive: such a milky and warm pink tone is not often found. The aroma, according to reviews, is weak, but noticeable. Of the minuses: at the end of flowering, a reddish speck appears on the petals, the outer petals may lose their appearance. The rest of the rose is excellent. She has very large, slowly opening flowers, continuous flowering, the bush is collected, by the third year of life it looks lush, can grow in partial shade, winters well.
