Elegant roses Ice Fo Yu are a decoration of any garden. They smell great, but require special care.
Breeding history of the variety
Ice Fo Yu is a rose variety that was bred in the UK in 2008. Thanks to the work of experienced breeders, a flower appeared that is classified as floribunda, since it combines the characteristics characteristic of hybrid tea roses and polyanthus roses. But this variety should not be confused with a hybrid.
Description of the variety
Rose of the Ice Fo Yu variety is used not only in single plantings. It fits perfectly into any flower bed or mixborder.
This flower does not have good frost resistance, therefore it requires shelter for the winter, but it tolerates a long absence of watering well. Increased soil moisture for Ice Fo Yu may result in the death of the plant.
It is worth remembering that when you plant Ice Fo Yu in the open sun, this rose burns out easily.
The flowers of the described variety during the budding period have a cream shade, when they bloom, they become lilac with a small eye. The buds have a pointed shape, they are medium in size, with a diameter of 6 to 7 cm.
Ice Fo Yu flowers are located in inflorescences. From 3 to 5 flowers can form on one stem.
This variety of roses has a surprisingly strong aroma, for which it is appreciated.
Ice Fo Yu bushes are compact, look great in group plantings. Their height can reach from 100 to 120 cm. In volume, roses can reach 800 mm.
Advantages and disadvantages
Roses of this variety have advantages and disadvantages worth mentioning. The advantages are:
wonderful aroma;
wide scope of use in landscape design;
compactness of bushes;
withstands prolonged drought.
Disadvantages:
fading in the sun;
does not like a large amount of moisture;
does not have frost resistance.
Flowering features
One of the main advantages of this variety is abundant flowering. Rose of the Ice Fo Yu variety is considered to be continuously flowering.
Use in landscape design
In landscape design, this variety is used to decorate flower beds, rose gardens and flower arrangements.
Landing
For planting roses Ice Fo Yu, it is better to choose a place with partial shade. This variety responds well to fertile, easily permeable soil. The planting time is either from April to May, or in the fall, a month before the first frost.
We carefully dig up the land for planting the Ice Fo Yu rose and enrich it with organic fertilizers (for example, manure) in order to provide the flowers with optimal conditions for further growth.
For low varieties such as Ice Fo Yu, the optimum spacing between shrubs will be twice the width of the crown. If these roses are not planted immediately after purchase, then the roots must be immersed in water for several hours and kept there before planting. In this case, the liquid should be enriched with a fungicidal agent.
Before planting Ice Fo Yu, the roots are shortened, and the damaged ones, if any, are removed. If we plant roses in the fall, then we do not shorten the shoots, if in the spring, then we cut them off.
Growing and care
These flowers like soil with a pH neutral or slightly acidic (in the range of 6-6.5). Ice Fo Yu will not grow in very acidic or alkaline soil. If the soil has an alkaline reaction, cover it with ammonium sulfate before planting in the fall. Slightly acidic soil environment promotes the assimilation of the minerals needed by Ice Fo Yu.
Watering and feeding
Watering roses of the Ice Fo Yu variety is necessary with cold water. One bush should take from 15 to 20 liters of liquid. If it is warm and dry outside, it is enough to water it 2 times a week.
Roses of this variety are deeply rooted, therefore they do not need frequent watering when they are already taken in a new place. However, during a drought period, even the Ice Fo Yu variety needs to provide high-quality watering. A convenient solution is to use a drip irrigation system. Water the flower in the evening so that the water does not evaporate quickly. To preserve moisture in the soil during especially dry periods, you can use mulch made from straw or sawdust, which is used to cover the soil around the Ice Fo Yu rose.
Roses of this variety need nutrients for good growth. Complex fertilizing for Ice Fo Yu is used in early spring, after pruning, and again in the middle of summer.
If you have prepared the land well for planting Ice Fo Yu roses, and have already added fertilizers to it, then you should postpone the application of fertilizing. It may happen that the leaves of the plants begin to dry out. This means that Ice Fo Yu lacks iron or manganese. It is then worth using ferrous sulfate.
In the spring, you can feed Ice Fo Yu with nitrogen, especially if these are young bushes that need to gain green mass. In summer, dressings with a high content of phosphorus and potassium are usually used.
Pruning
For roses of the Ice Fo Yu variety, formative and sanitary pruning is used. The flowers are pruned in order to support their further growth, to protect them from adverse weather conditions and to correct their shape. Remove old and unproductive flowers and shoots on roses of this variety.
Formative pruning is carried out in such a way that the crown of Ice Fo Yu does not diverge in different directions. On the bushes, it is enough to shorten the branches only to half. The more leaves Ice Fo Yu has, the more abundantly the rose blooms, so there is no need to remove weak shoots and root suckers.
Frost resistance and preparation for winter
The Ice Fo Yu variety has an average frost resistance. This flower belongs to the frost resistance zone 6. Thus, Ice Fo Yu can withstand temperatures down to -23 degrees Celsius.
Diseases and pests
Ice Fo Yu has excellent resistance to insect attacks and diseases, therefore, if plants are treated in a flower bed, then only as a preventive measure. Industrial insecticides and fungicides are widely used by gardeners.
Reproduction
You can propagate Ice Fo Yu by cuttings. This is the most acceptable option that even a beginner can handle. Cuttings are cut 8-10 cm long, immersed in water with the addition of "Kornevin". After two days, you can plant Ice Fo Yu in a pot so that the cutting will give roots there. When the first 5-6 leaves appear on the plant, it is allowed to plant it in open ground.
