Mirrored ceiling in interior design

In the modern world of design, innovations are constantly appearing that attract the attention of people involved in interior design. The mirrored ceiling is the most modern way to decorate the ceiling space in an original and beautiful way. Today, this method of finishing is not only a stylish, but also a practical design solution. It does not require special care, and is relatively unpretentious in operation. It is enough to wipe it occasionally with a dry cloth and special means for cleaning glass and mirrors.

Basically, such a cardinal solution is chosen by lovers of exclusive techniques in interior design. This is a rather costly part of the repair, which requires careful study of the installation details, surface treatment if necessary, and even possibly additional fastening of the plasterboard surface, as well as the selection of the necessary lighting devices.

The choice of material depends on the installation conditions and the amount of the customer's money resources spent, since the mirrored ceiling does not always mean the installation of the mirror itself. The cost of such ceilings will vary depending on the price and quality of the materials used in their production.

The features of the installation include the absence of the need for installation on an absolutely flat surface. Some minor imperfections on the surface with the help of such design techniques can be hidden, and especially carefully mask the imperfections of a product made of PVC film. Mirror glass plates will require more careful surface treatment, and sometimes even pre-fixing of the plasterboard structure is possible.

The color of the canvas or tile can vary depending on the preferences of the customer and in accordance with the design project. Shades can be very different: from gray-blue to bronze or salad. It also depends on the literacy of the designer and the preferences of the customer.

Another feature can be considered a fairly simple maintenance of such surfaces. It would seem that this surface needs to be cleaned with particular care, but in this case, on the contrary, it is enough to occasionally walk over it with a dry cloth or clean it with special glass cleaner. To do this, you can use a stepladder or mop. In general, maintenance is no more difficult than for tensioning structures made of PVC film.

A positive feature of this design solution is the ability of this surface to increase the illumination of the room. Even with a low power of lighting fixtures, such reflective surfaces can transform the space into a fairly bright room, enhancing the reflection of the rays and transmitting light to the room as much as possible.

Despite the complexity of such installation work, glass tiles with a reflective surface provide the ability to install recessed spotlights.In this case, the tiles must be attached to the plasterboard structure to hide the supplied electrics and luminaire boxes. The fixtures look great in these flush-mounted mirrored tiles. Installation in plastic, aluminum, rack or stretch ceilings is much easier.

The negative features of mirrored ceilings include their rather high cost and relatively high fragility. This applies, of course, to classic types of glass, but for a stretch ceiling made of PVC film, such a problem does not exist. But in the latter, some other unpleasant features should be noted, for example, the rather low environmental friendliness of this material.

Another unpleasant feature is that not all mirrored ceilings are recommended to be installed in the bathroom due to the incompatibility of the microclimate and high humidity in this room. Condensation may form on the mirror surface, which does not improve the appearance of such ceilings.

The classification of mirrored ceilings is carried out according to the type of material from which they are made. Some options are installed with a whole canvas, others - in fragments, for example, 600x600 mm.

Stretch ceilings made of PVC film are an integral piece of fabric in the size of the entire room. This view cannot be called a fully mirrored ceiling, but it is still capable of reflecting some of the objects. Basically, the reflection in such a ceiling is blurry and indistinct. This is perhaps the only kind of mirrored ceilings that can be placed in a bathroom. This material is not afraid of humidity in the room and there are almost no traces of condensation and limescale on it.

The next type is considered to be adhesive-based mirror polystyrene boards. They are manufactured and sold in rolls. Before installation, they must be straightened and allowed to rest. Among them there are also species intended for installation in wet rooms. You can fix them to the surface without the participation of professionals, on your own. At the same time, a lot of dirt or construction dust does not appear in the room; usually, the fastening of such ceilings does not create special problems.

Another type of mirrored ceilings can be considered aluminum or rack. They are attached using a special frame made of profiles. They look quite aesthetically pleasing, but somewhat cheaper compared to classic types.

The classic mirrored ceiling is made from a single piece of glass. This is a rather heavy structure that requires special knowledge and experience during installation. Therefore, it is better to entrust its installation to professionals. Without special experience and knowledge, it is quite difficult to mount such structures, especially for beginners. Such a ceiling looks the most expensive, impressive, original and stylish.

For self-assembly of a glass ceiling, a ceiling made of mirrored polystyrene plates on an adhesive basis is most suitable. On the reverse side of such plates there is an adhesive base, which is attached directly to the ceiling surface or to drywall. They are quite lightweight, so installation is not difficult. Editing can be handled by a non-professional or even a beginner.

You can also make a ceiling from acrylic - this solution allows you to create not just a plain surface, but additionally decorate the "mirror" with a pattern. At the same time, the walls should be neutral.

Design options using a mirrored ceiling can be very diverse. It is not necessary to cover the entire surface above your head with slabs; you can make separate islands or rosettes out of them, framing the chandelier mount.This solution looks very attractive even in a small room. Mirror plate islands can form geometric shapes like rectangles, squares, circles, or hexagons.

Acrylic-based ceilings also allow the creation of a pattern on the ceiling. In most cases, the mirror effect would interfere with the perception of the image, but a starry sky or a non-standard horoscope with black inserts looks very stylish even in gloss.

The scope is primarily due to practicality. Mirrored surfaces will be appropriate in any room of an apartment or house, not to mention corridors and hallways. They look especially good in the kitchen and in the bedroom. Today they are quite relevant, and the fashion for them is only gaining momentum. They will look very appropriate in the premises of hairdressers and beauty salons, some shops and shopping centers, cafes and restaurants.

At the same time, there are situations when mirrored ceilings are irrelevant due to the likelihood of spoiling the design. First of all, this happens in large rooms - the reflection on the ceiling will further increase the space, making it uncomfortable. On the contrary: in too cramped rooms, mirrored ceilings not only look appropriate, but are literally necessary to visually enlarge the room.

Before installing structures made of separate polystyrene or glass plates, it is necessary to clean the ceiling surface from paint and varnish residues. This will allow the reflective tiles to adhere fairly well to the ceiling. Paint residues can contribute to poor adhesion of mirror ceiling tiles.

If polystyrene or glass boards do not have their own adhesive base, they must be glued using special adhesive solutions. It is necessary to allow the glue solution to grab, so the master, pressing the tile to the ceiling, holds it in this position for some time without letting it go. After installing such plates, you need to walk over them with a roller for final alignment and more thorough gluing.

If the ceiling is too difficult to align, you can use drywall. It must be installed before gluing the mirror tiles. On such a surface, the tile is glued very simply, usually there are no difficulties with this. Additional leveling of drywall is not required.

The choice of the color of the mirror tiles for the ceilings must be carried out even when the design project is approved - so you will not have the opportunity to make a mistake with the shades during the repair.

Slatted mirrored ceilings are much easier to mount on aluminum profiles, but the result looks much cheaper than classic mirrored ceilings. Nevertheless, recessed luminaires can be easily installed in such ceilings.

One of the most relevant and beautiful examples of expanding space with the use of mirrored ceilings is considered to be their use in Khrushchev apartments. Even a small, inconspicuous, unsightly room or kitchen can be revitalized with such a design technique as a reflective surface. It visually enlarges and stretches the space in height. It is not necessary to decorate the entire ceiling in this way - a small rosette framing the chandelier attachment point on the ceiling, made of mirrored tiles in the form of honeycombs or hexagons, looks no less original and attracts the attention of guests and hosts. This technique is inexpensive due to the small number of tiles involved.

A mirrored ceiling will decorate any kitchen, especially if it is small and with a low ceiling. This effect increases the space and lengthens the height of the room.The main thing is not to forget, when installing a mirrored ceiling in the kitchen, to install an extractor hood, which minimizes grease contamination on the ceiling.

When using a mirrored ceiling, multi-level structures are often used. This technique complicates the design, makes it interesting and original. The illumination of the ceiling sheet with an LED strip from the second level is especially relevant now. It looks just amazing and unusual, moreover, such a backlight can act as a night lighting.
