How to make a skin punch with your own hands?

Working with leather requires expensive tools and equipment. Some of them have complex mechanisms, so it is better to purchase them in specialized stores. Others, on the contrary, can be easily done by hand. These tools include a punch.

The punch can be step and line. The last option can be done with your own hands from a regular fork. Before moving on to the main process, it is necessary to prepare materials and fixtures.

• Fork. The main requirement for a cutlery is durability. A stainless steel plug is ideal, but it is better to refuse an aluminum device, since this material is too soft.
• Hacksaw for metal.
• Emery.
• Hammer.
• Pliers.
• Gas-burner.

Before starting work, it is recommended to make the fork teeth even. To do this, it must be clamped by the handle in the pliers, and the teeth themselves must be well heated with a gas burner for several minutes. After that, the fork must be placed on a hard and flat surface, knock on the teeth with a hammer. After such manipulations, they will become even. Next, you need to use a hacksaw for metal.

It is required to shorten the teeth, but this must be done so that their length is the same. You can even make a drawing - marks on each tooth where you want to saw off. For convenience, you can shorten the handle, since it is initially large, and it will not be very convenient to use such a hole punch. The next step is to sharpen the teeth on emery.

The leather stepping punch can be made from a metal tube. The manufacturing process is simple. The following materials and accessories are required.

• Metal tube. Its diameter must be determined independently. It depends on what size the holes will be needed.
• Two metal screws.
• Emery.
• Drill.

First you need to pick up the receiver. At one end, it must be well sharpened on emery. Then you can move on to processing the other end. There, using a drill, you need to drill two holes, screw the bolts into them - in this case, they will serve as a handle. The bolts must be well secured. The stepping punch is ready.

If you make punches in accordance with the recommendations, then they will turn out to be of high quality and will last more than one year. But in order to improve the comfort of their use, it is recommended to use useful tips. The first thing that needs to be done as convenient as possible is this is the handle of each tool... In either case, the handle of the punch will turn out to be metal. It is not very convenient to hold it, in addition, a hard tip can be used to rub a corn during work. To make it convenient it is recommended to wrap the handle with several layers of electrical tape. So the handle will be softer, and the tool itself will not slip out of the hand during operation and will not injure the palm.

In the process of sharpening on emery, so-called notches can form on the teeth and the tube. Sharp and small particles can damage the leather product. To prevent this, the ends can be cleaned with sandpaper. So the surface will be flat and as smooth as possible.

Despite the quality of the instruments received, they must first be tested. To do this, you need to take a small piece of leather and try to make holes. In this case, the movement of the hand should be as sharp as possible. The result should be smooth and clear holes. If the tool does not pierce the skin, the sharpening may not have been very thorough.

After manufacturing, the tools can be lubricated with a small amount of machine oil. In this state, they should lie for several hours. But before working with the skin, the engine oil should be completely removed with a special degreasing agent. Otherwise, the oil may stain the material.
