How to store a radish?
When planting radish on your site, you need not only to know how to plant it, grow it, but also how to store it correctly. There are many ways and it is worth learning about all in order to choose the right one.
Preparation
Before laying fruits for the winter, you need to prepare containers for storing vegetables. They can be different, it all depends on the chosen method. It can be:
- wooden boxes;
- barrels;
- buckets;
- fabric bags.
The room where the radish will be stored must be pre-washed, dried and ventilated. It is also advisable to sort out old stocks of vegetables there or even throw it out altogether if it is a basement, shed or garage.
Harvest when the radish is fully ripe. Do not store unripe or overripe fruits. The harvest time depends on the variety chosen, and this information is always found on the seed package or is available from the seller.
Harvesting should not be postponed, because overripe fruits become tougher and less juicy. It is best to store large root vegetables, and use small ones as soon as possible for preparing various dishes. Those specimens that have deformation are also better not to be left for storage.
When the radish is removed from the soil, the tops are cut, the extra roots are carefully shortened. After that, the radish is slightly dried in the open air in a dry place and sent to storage in the planned containers and place.
The necessary conditions
Radish is very well stored at home, especially if you approach this process correctly. The terms of storage directly depend on the storage conditions.
- In fridge (with a temperature of +2 degrees) radish can be stored for a month, but you need to make sure that moisture does not get into the container with vegetables. Alternatively, the vegetables can be wrapped with tissue paper. It is better not to use plastic bags.
- In the freezer peeled and chopped fruits can be stored for up to a year. To do this, they can be cut, grated, arranged in plastic containers or bags and sent to the freezer. It should be borne in mind that the product cannot be re-frozen.
- If it is decided to store in the cellarthen it should be dry, cool and dark. The fruits are placed in boxes or directly on the floor and sprinkled with sand.
Methods and terms
You can store radish in winter in different ways, the main thing is to do it right. The shelf life of a radish will depend on where it is stored and if all conditions are met. Vegetables can be stored in the cellar until spring, but constant monitoring must be present. The radish must be constantly sorted out and slightly spoiled vegetables must be removed immediately, since they will quickly infect the rest of the specimens.
The radish is laid out in wooden containers, placed on the floor or on shelves. The layers are sprinkled with sand. Of course, the premises must be prepared. First, you need to treat the shelves and walls with antifungal agents. There must be ventilation in the cellar. The humidity level should not exceed 85%, and the temperature should be 3-5 degrees Celsius. It is worth thinking about the right neighbors.
Potatoes and carrots are good options, and the storage conditions for these vegetables are similar. But pears and apples cannot be placed nearby.
In the absence of a basement or cellar, you can store the radish in a cool place for some time.
- On the balcony, but only before the onset of frost. If it is well insulated, and the winters are not too cold, it is possible in winter, but you will have to monitor the temperature: it should not drop below zero.
- A cool pantry is also suitable, where there are storage conditions, there are shelves and containers, and the room is well ventilated.
- You can store the radish for some time under a windowsill or balcony. But this is literally a week, nothing more.
In other cases, you will have to rely only on the refrigerator. Vegetables can be stored in the vegetable compartments or on the lower shelves for 2-3 weeks. But you will need to check the integrity of the vegetable and the absence of moisture on it. If stored in a plastic bag, holes must be made in it to allow air to enter. Or you can wrap each vegetable in clean paper.
The freezer is not very suitable for radishes, because after defrosting, the vegetable becomes soft and is only suitable for preparing medicinal mixtures. To put in the freezer, the radish is cut into pieces, grated and placed in clean containers or airtight bags. It is definitely not necessary to defrost and re-freeze the vegetable.
Another way to preserve a product is to preserve it. You can pickle, ferment and salt the radish.
- For pickling, you need to wash and peel the vegetables well, then cut them into pieces and put them in sterile jars. For the brine, take water, vinegar, salt and sugar, boil all this, then pour the jars and tighten the lids.
- To ferment the radish, it is grated, salt, garlic are added and laid out in jars, covered with plastic lids. After two weeks, the spicy appetizer is ready.
- In addition, the radish can be prepared in the form of salads. Carrots, cabbage, parsley, celery, dill go well with it. All ingredients are cut into strips, cubes or circles, placed in jars and poured with a marinade of water, vinegar, salt and sugar.
All preserves should be stored in a cool place at a suitable temperature. A cellar, basement, garage, storage room, refrigerator, insulated balcony are suitable.
Storage tips for different varieties
To keep the radish as long as possible, you need to choose the right variety. Late varieties are best kept. The early ones can only lie for a week, no more. But the late ones can be placed in the cellar, refrigerator and other convenient places.
For example, "Margelan" and black are best kept in the refrigerator, placed on the lower shelves or in drawers for vegetables, after putting the radish in bags with holes. But the daikon can be preserved until early spring if there is a good cellar or basement that meets all the requirements, including temperature, humidity and cleanliness.
To keep the radish longer, it should be removed later. But at the same time, you need to be in time before the frost. If you plan to store the radish until spring, you need to immediately choose suitable varieties, for example, "Gaivoronskaya 27" or "Doctor".
