How to make a construction vacuum cleaner with your own hands?
Undertaking something to build or repair, you do not have to put up with the abundance of dust "in progress." A construction vacuum cleaner can be an excellent help. You don't even need to buy it - many home-made designs work no worse than those made at the factory.
Design features
First, one should warn against a common mistake: simple household appliances cannot replace a real construction vacuum cleaner. They have to be deeply reworked and refined to work effectively. Otherwise, the dust collector will be constantly oversaturated, and the device itself will rapidly fail. For the apparatus to work efficiently, it is necessary to use components that create a strong vacuum at the inlet. The vacuum unit is driven by an electric motor of increased power, sometimes even a couple of drives are used at once.
Since during repair and construction, during the dismantling of structures, much more dust is generated than usual, it is necessary to clean the air faster and more intensively. This places increased demands on filters (their reliability, throughput) and on hoses. The hose is attached to a nipple located in the body. Dust particles and solids rush through a hose into a special container. To improve the quality of work, an additional filter should be installed at the outlet of the container.
Since more air moves in a construction vacuum cleaner, in addition to containing strong particles, sometimes interspersed with sharp edges, it should be more reliable than a household analog. The outer case will have to be strengthened as much as possible. You will have to carefully select the motor so that it does not break under increased load. The hose of a construction vacuum cleaner should also be stronger than that of a regular one. The location and compatibility of all parts is carefully thought out.
Cyclone-type construction vacuum cleaners have gained popularity. They are equipped with a pair of filters that trap particles of different fractions. This solution increases the cleaning efficiency and reduces the frequency of filter maintenance. Significantly, cyclones generate relatively little noise. Even if a valuable item accidentally falls inside, it will be very easy to find it.
Required tools and materials
Making a vacuum cleaner for a construction site requires a relatively small amount of consumables. A typical list includes:
- simple household appliance;
- a bucket made of dense plastic (best of all what is used for putty);
- sewer pipe made of solid polymers with a cross section of 4 cm;
- sewage outlet made of polypropylene, inclined at an angle of 90 degrees;
- crown with a diameter of 4 cm for metal.
Process of creation
Consider two approaches to making a vacuum cleaner at home.
From improvised means
First of all, you need to drill or carefully cut the lid of the bucket in the middle. A through hole is prepared there, where a tube is then inserted. Next, you need to prepare another hole, this time near the edge. It is advisable to execute it close to the stiffener, but so that the reliability of the structure is preserved. You can punch the necessary holes with your own hands and without special drill bits.
You only have to:
- draw the required circle;
- make careful punctures on it with an awl;
- make an incision with a clerical knife.
Yes, with this method, it is impossible to immediately make even holes. But it is quite possible to refine them using a round file. A pair of sewer taps is inserted into the prepared channels.
Important: their diameter and exact location must be reflected in the drawings, otherwise installation errors are inevitable. Reliable fixation of the outlets and the elimination of abnormal air suction is achieved by using glue.
Experts recommend that you first bring the edges of the tube to perfection using a file or sandpaper. The greater the roughness, the better the adhesion. The lid is prepared in the same way. Next, the tube is laid, and only the glue is applied last. Then the industrial vacuum cleaner will last a long time, if, of course, a lot of glue is used.
Attention: there is a method that allows you to do without gluing, without fan pipes. All you need is rubber adapter couplings, which are easy to buy at any construction supermarket. These products must be selected according to the hose diameter. If an unsuitable product is used, additional winding and other auxiliary measures will be required. But there is one more thing that needs to be done.
The tube, located on the edge of the lid, is covered from above with a sewer outlet directed at a right angle. We can say that the separator is almost ready for operation. The next step is to secure the lid with the supplied taps to the bucket. The hose through which the air will be taken is placed in the central hole. The area for collecting debris and dust is located at the corner.
Important: it is very good if the packing rings are supplied in the tubes. Their diameter should correspond to the diameter of the corrugated hoses of the vacuum cleaner. Everything, the work is completed. You can safely run a homemade vacuum cleaner. But still it is worth checking the quality of the fasteners, the reliability of the insulation again. It is better to waste a few minutes on these checks than to suffer an electric shock.
Let's dwell a little on how the product will work. Coarse dust, drawn inward, ends up at the bottom of the tank. But it is removed from the place where the purified air is discharged to the outside. Cyclonic vacuum cleaners are most often like a cone. But the shape of the "cylinder" is also good for solving basic problems.
The same devices can be used for cement and concrete dust. However, it must be remembered that the second substance contains more moisture. And therefore, before cleaning it, you will have to carefully check the insulation quality of a homemade vacuum cleaner. In any case, you should use the highest possible bucket. But it will work well only if it is properly docked with the rest of the parts.
If a cylindrical bucket is used, the tangential air flow must be directed not through the side wall, but into the flat lid. Sometimes they take several buckets at once - you just need to rearrange the lids. The hitch during work is reduced to a minimum.
Recommendation: on powerful vacuum cleaners, instead of a plastic container, they take steel tanks of a similar shape. They will definitely not collapse or be crushed.
It is very important to use power regulators. Therefore, when selecting ready-made schemes, preference is given to those options where such a detail is provided.
Important: even the best designs, which allow only 5% of construction waste to pass into the dust collector, will eventually disable the device. To avoid the spread of fines as much as possible, use electric filters or bubble columns.
From a household vacuum cleaner
You can also make a construction vacuum cleaner from an old conventional analogue. The device obtained in this way will help to remove:
- crushed glass;
- sand and clay;
- other bulk substances;
- technical liquids;
- metal shavings;
- small metal debris.
Made from a simple vacuum cleaner, it will also come in handy for the carpentry shop, where it is used for sawdust.But in any case, you will have to carefully study the main characteristics. So, by increasing the power, you can make the device more efficient. However, as it grows, the mass of the apparatus also increases. But his mobility drops significantly.
Experts advise using designs with running wheels. Moving them will be much easier and more convenient. The same recommendation can be followed when creating a construction vacuum cleaner for a garage. You just need to remember that in the latter case, the device must be reliably protected from contact with fuels and lubricants. When choosing the diameter of the wheels, you should take into account the size of the obstacles that will have to be moved.
It is advisable to make as much of the structure as possible from strong stainless steel grades. The workpieces will have to be coated with an antibacterial compound. When modifying a simple vacuum cleaner, you will also need to use a high-power cooling circuit. In addition to this, a homemade construction vacuum cleaner must be equipped with noise suppression devices and spare trash cans.
Recommendation: whenever possible, you should take vacuum cleaners manufactured before 1985 as a basis. Their massiveness in this case will only play into the hands of home craftsmen. Less modifications are needed (and the reliability of such devices is much higher than that of modern models).
To improve the characteristics of the waste container, it is necessary to twist the wheels from it with a suitable screwdriver. If holes appear, they are simply glued with tape. Do the same with the nameplate.
After removing all the latches and rivets, put the plug. To make it work more reliably, tape is wound. Now you can punch a hole in the bottom with an internal section of 4.3 cm. Gaskets are used for sealing. A lid and a branch pipe are placed in the garbage container.
The lid must be screwed on with self-tapping screws. Next, work begins on the suction pipe. The hole into which it will be mounted is cut with metal scissors. Self-tapping screws are used to secure the pipe again. The connection is sealed with gauze or pharmacy bandage; before winding them, the canvases are impregnated with glue.
Professional advice
The process of creating a homemade construction vacuum cleaner, as you can see, is relatively simple. But there are some subtleties that you need to know. So, when installing an air purifier on a grinder, you need to use a casing. For its manufacture, use an aluminum pan or a plastic product of a suitable size. It is only important how to calculate the depth of immersion of the cutting blade into the material being processed.
A slightly different approach is needed when preparing a homemade vacuum cleaner for a CNC woodworking machine. Since a lot of sawdust is formed, a capacious barrel (from 100 l) is definitely needed. If there is no ready-made barrel with suitable dimensions, they simply make a plywood frame filled with cellular polycarbonate. The cage body is made up of rings cut with a milling compass. Important: the rings must be made of plywood, not fiberboard.
