Vacuum cleaner attachments: features, types, tips for choosing
A few decades ago, a vacuum cleaner was an unprecedented luxury. Not every housewife could boast of having such a unit in her apartment. Today, such a device has already become completely familiar and affordable, although it remains an expensive purchase.
In order not to spend extra money, going through model after model in search of a suitable vacuum cleaner, you should pay more attention to its packaging. Namely, the number and type of attachments sold in the kit or purchased separately from the household appliances themselves.
Features and purpose
A nozzle or brush is an element into which all dust and debris is sucked in, after which they already enter the hose itself and the body of the vacuum cleaner. It resembles an ordinary brush for manual cleaning of carpets or floors, but with a hole inside.
Despite the fact that initially the vacuum cleaner was designed exclusively for cleaning the floor, some attachments can turn it into a device for dry cleaning of fabrics or a spray of paint or whitewash familiar to many from childhood.
The variety of different attachments can be classified in several ways. Firstly, all main and auxiliary brushes can be divided according to their purpose.
- For cleaning carpets. Such brushes are considered standard and are designed to collect debris and dust from various rugs, carpets and paths. They should have a stiff and thick bristle that can "comb out" even the fluffiest of crumbs.
- For cleaning the floor. Such attachments are designed for cleaning litter from linoleum, tiles, self-leveling and other floors. In this case, the requirements for the quality of the bristles are much lower. Among all the elements for cleaning the floor, it is worth highlighting the brushes for parquet and laminate flooring, which have a softer effect on the wood and do not damage it.
- For reading upholstered furniture, mattresses and pillows. These types should not be used on fluffy carpets, as they are too fragile, but these attachments do an excellent job of dealing with dust that has penetrated deep into the upholstery of an old sofa or armchair.
- For cleaning polished surfaces. Regular brushes will slide too much on a polished table or shelf. In addition, coarse hairs or protruding rollers can simply scratch the finish. That is why a soft sponge or cloth is needed to clean such a surface.
- For cleaning hard-to-reach places. A variety of flexible and rotating, elongated and charcoal nozzles are perfect for cleaning ceilings or baseboards, floors under a sofa or nightstand where a regular nozzle cannot fit.
- For collecting wool. Pet owners, especially long-haired breeds, are familiar with the daily agony of cleaning their hair. Conventional brushes cannot handle this particular type of debris. It is for this that special nozzles with rubber rollers or antennae were invented, which lift hair from the surface and allow the device to calmly suck it inside.
- For cleaning the motor of a large industrial vacuum cleaner. Such large installations are never cleaned by hand. This is done using ordinary household devices with special brushes capable of cleaning even the most difficult parts of the engine from dust and dirt.
Secondly, some nozzles come in kits with most different models of home vacuum cleaners, and some can only be purchased as a separate product. In addition, all of them can be classified according to the method of cleaning.
In addition to conventional vacuum cleaners that suck up litter with dry air, there are also washing and steam-generating models. Their attachments are correspondingly different from those of a conventional apparatus.
For dry cleaning
Most household vacuum cleaners are designed exclusively for dry cleaning of surfaces, which means that most nozzles are designed specifically for this technique. The following types of attachments are most commonly used.
- "Floor carpet". This versatile brush allows you to quickly switch between cleaning regular linoleum and a fluffy bedside rug. With the help of a special adjuster, the bristles can be extended to their full length, made shorter or completely retracted into the body. The simplest and most budgetary option, which, unfortunately, can only cope with ordinary litter.
- Crevice. Slim nozzle that fits under a low bed, sofa or wall. As the name suggests, it can be used to clean even small cracks, into which a conventional nozzle simply will not fit. You can often find these backlit slotted nozzles. This makes it much easier to clean dark and hard-to-reach surfaces.
- Coal. Triangular brushes are great for cleaning corners. Moreover, such a brush should perfectly collect debris both from a smooth surface and from a dense long carpet pile.
- Parquet. The villi of the brush differ in length, which allows you to gently collect litter of any size, even from the most budget laminate, without damaging the coating. This nozzle is smaller in height and depth than a conventional carpet. However, other surfaces cannot be cleaned with this attachment, and this should be taken into account when purchasing.
- Electrostatic. The brushes are specially designed to remove dust from delicate surfaces such as TV screens and monitors. A gentle touch allows you to collect dust even from the leaves of indoor plants and small electronics. Unfortunately, the electrostatic brush itself is quite fragile, so it can quickly break.
- With a turbine. The most popular for the home are considered "turbo brushes" with a mechanical or electrical drive. Unlike a conventional nozzle, the bristles of which are arranged in rows or along the perimeter of the body, a special rotating roller is built into the turbo brush. Due to the high rotation speed, even heavy dirt on the carpet can be well wiped off, and not just collect debris visible to the naked eye from it. In elements with a mechanical drive, the movement of the roller is caused by a turbine installed inside. And the electric brush rotates, powered by a conventional network.
The only drawback of a turbo brush is the possibility of mechanical damage to soft surfaces.
- Combined. One such brush can be used both for cleaning a self-leveling floor, and for cleaning upholstered furniture or fluffy carpet. In addition, combination brushes are often made flexible or with pivoting parts so that cleaning can be carried out even in inaccessible corners.
For wet cleaning
The choice of different nozzles for wet cleaning is less than for traditional dry cleaning. All variety can be roughly divided into the following types.
- Standard attachments in various shapes. Instead of ordinary bristles, nozzles have special rubberized sponges, which are supplied with water and detergent. In some cases, these sponges can be replaced or supplemented with special fabric inserts that absorb excess water and wipe dirt off the floor.
- Brushes. Brushes-brushes for washing vacuum cleaners are intended for processing and cleaning delicate upholstery of upholstered furniture and curtains. They are equipped with a special plush insert that does not damage or deform the fabric.
- Vacuum. The attachments are designed for cleaning vacuum cleaners without a bag. They provide a metered flow of cleaning agents to the floor surface during operation. Often these attachments are used with car vacuum cleaners.
For steam cleaning
Even without buying a special steam-generating vacuum cleaner, you can get it from a regular detergent. To do this, it is enough to buy a special steam generator nozzle, which will allow you to get both dry and wet steam. It can be used to scrub even the dirtiest floors in just a few minutes. And besides, after such cleaning, their separate washing is not required.
An additional modification of the nozzle is an iron brush, with which you can steam curtains, bed linen and clothes.
Varieties and characteristics
Depending on what type of cleaning a particular brush is suitable for, you can determine the necessary characteristics that you will need to pay attention to. So, with nozzles for dry cleaning, the following parameters play an important role.
- The quantity and quality of the bristles on the brush, its length and the ability to adjust. It is best to take combination brushes, in which the long bristles can simply be removed inside the body. The tougher the brush of the vacuum cleaner, the more fluffy the carpet it can clean.
- Case dimensions. The smaller the height and perimeter of the nozzle, the more hard-to-reach places it will fit. Moreover, the larger the area to be treated, the faster the complete cleaning of open spaces is carried out.
- Angles of rotation. The more perfect the rotary mechanism of the nozzle, the more surfaces it can clean.
- Rotation speed of the turbo brush. The higher the rotation speed, the better the technique will be at collecting litter and crumbs. However, it will be better if this parameter can be adjusted manually, as excessive rotation speed will lead to scratches and deformation of delicate surfaces.
For wet cleaning, in addition to the above, the following parameters are also important.
- Brush material. It can be either ordinary bristles or foam rubber, microfiber or rubber. Each material is designed for individual surfaces. So, microfiber will be easy to clean laminate, and rubber is suitable for tiles or glass.
- Adjusting the supply of cleaning agents. On the one hand, it is good and very convenient when the device itself supplies soapy water at regular intervals and there is no need for a person to monitor this. On the other hand, in some cases it will be more convenient to determine the frequency of supply yourself and even the amount of the supplied agent.
For those who prefer steam cleaning, special attention should be paid to steam temperature and humidity. It is good if the nozzle allows you to get both dry and wet steam, and the temperature range is wide enough.
Steam that is too hot or too humid can ruin even the finest parquet or laminate flooring, let alone clean upholstery or curtains.
Rating of the best models
Of course, there is no perfect nozzle that fits all cleaning. Certain types of such devices are suitable for different surfaces and different methods. However, each type has the most popular models. Common floor carpet attachments include the Topperr NP 1 universal brush and various Philips attachments (eg FC8077 / 01 or FC8075 / 01). For cleaning hard-to-reach places, the flexible Filtero FTN 07 crevice nozzle is perfect, which is chosen by a large number of customers.
Krausen PLUS is a special electric beating brush used for cleaning upholstered furniture and mattresses. Despite its high price, this device is very popular among buyers and has a high rating among similar attachments. Among the parquet nozzles, the leading positions are occupied by the Twister nozzles, which are produced by the Karcher group of companies. Soft yet elastic bristles of different lengths allow you to collect all debris from the tree without damaging it at the joints.
In recent years, unusual attachments for highly specialized cleaning have gained immense popularity. The flexible nozzle Dust Daddy consists of 36 thin plastic tubes connected to one brush.Due to the small diameter and high mobility of such tubes, dry cleaning can be carried out even where there are many small scattered parts. For example, you can use it to vacuum a table in a workshop or a container with children's toys. All dust will be sucked into the tiny holes, and small parts will remain in place, since they do not exceed the diameter of the holes in size.
Another unusual model of a nozzle for a regular household vacuum cleaner is the Dyson Groom dog brush. When you press a special handle, small metal teeth protrude from its body, with which it is convenient to comb the animal. After a lot of hairs have accumulated on the teeth, the lever is released, and the wool remaining on the body is sucked into the hole by a vacuum cleaner. Not only pets are satisfied, but also their owners, who do not have to wet cleaning after each brushing procedure.
How to choose?
In order to choose the right nozzle and its quality was the best, there are a few simple tips to follow.
- Brand and line accounting. If the nozzle is purchased separately from the vacuum cleaner itself, it is best to choose the same manufacturers and one line of equipment, since otherwise there is a high risk of getting an element that is not suitable for the technique.
- Taking into account the size and type of fastening. It is imperative to take into account how exactly the nozzle is attached to the pipe and whether it coincides with it in diameter. In this case, the first parameter is more important, since the error in the diameter can be easily compensated for by purchasing a special adapter. If the outer diameter of the vacuum cleaner tube is 32 mm, and the inner diameter of the nozzle is 35 mm, you will have to buy an adapter, since even with the slightest difference, the nozzle will simply slide off.
- Inspection for damage. Be sure to open the box and carefully examine the item. The bristles should be even, and there should be no chips or scratches on the body. If possible, it is better to check electrical devices immediately in the store.
- Technical documentation and warranty. Conscientious manufacturers always attach all the necessary documentation to their products and give at least a small guarantee for household appliances and components. It is not worth saving and purchasing unknown brands or Chinese fakes.
How to use?
In order to extend the life of a new purchase, it is necessary to use it carefully and correctly.
- Connection, operation and removal of the nozzle should always be carried out according to the instructions. If the nozzle is designed for cleaning carpets, do not try to vacuum the parquet with it, and vice versa. In addition, it is not necessary to allow mechanical damage to the case, to press and pull strongly with the brush during operation.
- After finishing cleaning, the brush must be properly cleaned. To do this, it must be removed from the pipe or hose and cleaned with hands or a damp cloth. You do not need to pull hard on the stubble or brush it out with a combs, or you may damage the device. Cloth pads and sponges from vacuum cleaners can be removed and rinsed in running water, then dried naturally. Do not dry them on batteries or under the scorching rays of the sun.
- Each nozzle should have its own specific place. Better if it is a separate box or small box. Before putting it away for storage, it is necessary to remove the bristles inside, fix the wheel and other moving parts.
With this approach to use and storage, the nozzles will last much longer than their average life and will remain serviceable.
