How to secure a sheet to a mattress: ideas and tips

  2. How to fix?
  3. Selection of fabric

Deep sleep in comfortable conditions is a guarantee not only of a good mood, but also of excellent health. Bright light, constant annoying noise, too low or high air temperature - all this can infuriate even the most calm person. But the biggest discomfort can come from clumping and bulging sheets. She gets lost under the lower back, gets tangled in the legs and forces him to get out of bed again and again and change it.

Why is the sheet crumpled?

If every night turns into a struggle with a naughty set of bedding, then this means that a strategic mistake was made in choosing it. There are several reasons why a rectangle of fabric refuses to lie in its place and strives to stray into a tight lump.

  • Bed linen is not matched. If the sheet is much larger than the mattress, then most often there are no problems with fixing the free edge. But tucking a small sheet so that it lasts all night is quite difficult.
  • The bed is not made correctly. To prevent the sheet from sliding off the mattress, it must be properly covered. If this is not done, then all the free edges will surely get tangled in the legs and may even break.
  • The fabric is too thin or slippery. Thin cotton or smooth satin does not hold its shape at all and easily slides out even from under a heavy mattress. In addition, in hot weather or heavy sweating of a person, they can "stick" to the skin and stretch for it when moving.
  • The mattress is made of materials on which the fabric glides. Old mattresses with cotton wool or iron springs were angular and uncomfortable, but perfectly held any sheet. Modern orthopedic mattresses made from ecological materials are too light and smooth, so the selection of fabrics for bedding should be more careful.
  • Active movement of a person in a dream. Some people sleep almost motionless, waking up in exactly the same position in which they fell asleep. Others move their arms and legs so strongly in a dream, turn over from side to side, that no matter how thick and large the sheet is, it will gather in a heap without special fasteners.

For each of the reasons there is a separate solution, while the more securely the sheet is fixed, the more problems will be solved.

How to fix?

Fastening with sewing. For those who want to secure the sheet without buying various accessories, the sewing method is perfect. Firstly, the simplest way of execution, but not the most convenient to use, is the usual sewing of the sheet to the mattress. You will need a regular needle and thread, which manually sew several stitches at each corner of the sheet or around its entire perimeter. Unfortunately, with every change of linen, these stitches will have to be unstitched and re-sewn, which will ultimately cause even more inconvenience.

Secondly, you can sew on various fasteners that will always be at the hand of the hostess or owner. These can be buttons sewn to the mattress and loops sewn to the sheet. Also, such attachments can be strings or ribbons around the perimeter of the sheet, which are tied with similar ribbons on the mattress. You can sew on special Velcro that will fix the sheet in a certain place, but they quickly deteriorate after the second or third wash of the laundry.

A more difficult but reliable way is to turn a regular sheet into an elasticated sheet. There are many master classes on sewing such bedding both from a cut of fabric and from ready-made linen of large size. For those who prefer to save time rather than money, there is an opportunity to purchase such kits in various stores and websites. There are many options for fabrics and colors that can satisfy the desires of even the most demanding client.

Fastening with special holders. For those who want to fix the sheet in one position, but do not know which side they hold the needle, the method of fastening with special holders is perfect. These can be both special accessories for the mattress, and materials at hand, adapted by resourceful buyers.

  • Special holder. Stores that sell a variety of bedding products often offer small corner sheet holders. They look like trouser suspenders. They have metal or plastic clips on them. These clamps grip the sheet from both sides of the mattress, and the dense elastic band prevents the holder from moving. Metal products are, of course, more expensive than plastic ones, but they are more durable and reliable.
  • Improvised means. For those who do not want to buy ready-made products or cannot find them in the store of their locality, there are many different improvised means. You can take metal "crocodiles" for curtains and take out a metal ring from them, which can interfere. You can find a variety of clips and holders, such as regular office paper holders. In addition, you will need a regular tight elastic band that connects to the clips and keeps the corners of the sheet taut.

Some owners, in order to save money, prefer to fasten the elastic with ordinary pins. However, this option is not only unreliable, but also fraught with injuries, because a simple pin can easily unfasten under the mattress, and the sheet will slip out. In this case, it is easy to get injured with the tip of an unbuttoned pin when changing clothes.

Selection of fabric

The denser the fabric, the less likely the sheet will slip out even from under a light mattress. In addition, dense natural fabrics are distinguished by the fact that they "breathe", and the body on such a sheet will not sweat and experience discomfort. The best choice would be linen bedding, thick coarse calico or plain cotton.

If the mattress itself is made of sliding material, a special mattress cover must be used. A dense cover is put on the mattress, and a sheet is already spread over it. Most often, the fabric of such a mattress topper is quite dense and rough so that the rectangle of the sheet remains in place until the morning. Another advantage of such a cover is that it protects the mattress itself from dirt and deterioration and allows you to keep its appearance and functionality much longer.
