What should be the distance from the projector to the screen?

  1. Vertical and horizontal position
  2. Throw distance
  3. Positioning the short throw projector

When launching the first movie on the projector, the viewer wonders if the projector is installed correctly. In this article, we will look at the possibilities of modern projectors for obtaining the perfect image and full immersion in the world of cinema.

Vertical and horizontal position

Positioning the projector - the main reason for the quality of the resulting image. It can be located at different points in the room - you can hang it from the ceiling, put it in a closet, behind the viewer, next to or in front of him. Modern projectors are divided into two types of image correction:

  • with lens shift;
  • no offset.

Type 1 projectors can be located next to the viewer, since the shift function allows you to change the position of the picture horizontally without losing image quality. Such devices are very convenient for home use - in a confined space.

Second Are mainly office or cinema projectors. This view has no horizontal shift and changes the image only vertically. This type should be located exactly in the middle of the screen onto which the image is projected.

Placing the projector on a ceiling is very convenient, but you need to be aware of some vertical offset values.

Modern devices are placed upside down. It is important to clarify the shift criterion - it is specified in the operating instructions and is indicated as a percentage. A value with a positive value will indicate the maximum rise of the image to the ceiling relative to the screen (for example, + 96%), while a negative value, on the contrary, indicates the minimum lowering of the projection to the floor of -96%.

When hanging or positioning the projector on a cabinet, you must take into account the availability of power sources nearby. All devices are equipped with an HDMI cable and power cord. If the projector model is not equipped with vertical adjustment, you need to turn it on and independently adjust the image by moving up or down.

The optimal vertical distance is calculated using the formula: mounting height = screen height multiplied by the vertical offset height. For example, if the device displacement height is from + 96% to -96%, and the screen height is 124.5 cm (this is equal to a diagonal of 50 inches), then it turns out 124.5x96% = 119.5 cm.This means that the projector can be positioned no more than 119.5 cm above or below the center of the screen.

Be sure to consider the position of the viewer in the room.... This question can also be calculated, but it is necessary to take into account the values separately for each viewer and the screen chosen by him.

Throw distance

The projection distance refers to the distance from the lens to the screen, provided the projector is not equipped with the ZOOM function. It is not difficult to define it. You need to multiply the width of the screen by the projection ratio. These values can be found in the instructions supplied with the screen. For example, a screen width of 254 centimeters (this is a 100 inch diagonal) and a throw ratio of 1.4: 1 to 2.8: 1, then the ideal viewing distance would be from 3.55 to 7.1 m (1.4x254 = 355.6 cm and 2.8x254 = 711 cm) ...

Prompt. If you already have a projector hanging and you do not know what size you need to take the screen, then using this formula you can calculate.

For example, the distance from the projector to the wall is 3 m.We take this value and divide by the projection ratio (1.4: 1, 2.8: 1), 3 / 1.4 = 2.14 m, 3 / 2.8 = 1.07 m.Thus, we get that we need a screen with a width of 1.07 to 2.14 m.

After completing the calculations, you can safely proceed to the choice of mounts for the device. Important take into account coverageto which the projector will be mounted. Do not skimp on the bracket - modern projectors are quite heavy and cheap mounts simply cannot support them. When placing the unit on the ceiling, avoiding seating for spectators directly under the projector to avoid accidental drop.

Positioning the short throw projector

Short throw is a type of projector designed for use in small rooms. Very suitable for those who do not want to engage in professional installation. Compact size and unpretentious placement. This type of projector is ideal for home use. The main advantage is slight blindness (if this view is used for small presentations). Depending on the model, this type of projector can be installed at a distance of 10cm to 2.5m.

Installation does not require any special skills or calculations, the small size will easily allow you to set the projector at the desired distance to select the best image quality.

Considering different types of screens, it is worth paying attention to glint: The smaller it is, the better the projection is displayed. If there are additional light sources in the room, it is necessary to direct them away from the screen canvas, if this is a window, then it is necessary to darken it as much as possible in order to avoid all sorts of glare.

Thus, choosing a projector, you can, without professional help, make the necessary calculations to determine the size of the screen and the distance from the device to the screen canvas.
