How and how to clean the printer?
There is a printer in almost every home. At first glance, maintenance is simple: just connect the device correctly and periodically refill a cartridge or add toner, and the MFP will give a clear and rich picture. But in fact, contamination of the nozzles, head or other parts of the device often occurs. Print quality drops and requires cleaning. You should know how to do it.
Fundamental rules
It is always recommended to clean the printer after a long period of stagnation (in the case of an inkjet device). Inkjet devices that are not used regularly will dry out ink on the print head. The nozzles, or nozzles (the holes through which the colorant is fed), become clogged. As a result, streaks appear on the image, and certain dyes may even stop being displayed.
Experts recommend cleaning every month. If the device is idle for a long time (more than 2 weeks), then cleaning is required before each print.
Laser printers have no ink drying problem, as they use dry powder - toner to transfer images. But the excess powder gradually accumulates in the cartridge. They can spoil the picture or put pressure on the drum, the main element of a laser printer. The result is the same as when the print head is clogged with inkjet units: stripes, poor quality picture. Laser printers clean up as a problem arises, there is no clear frequency of prevention.
Cleaning rules must be followed.
- Before starting the procedure, disconnect the device from the mains. During cleaning, liquid substances are used, upon contact with current, they cause a short circuit. Power outages are an important safety rule.
- For an inkjet printer, run the nozzle check and clean program before cleaning. There is a possibility that, despite the long inactivity of the device, the nozzles are not clogged, and the printer prints normally - a nozzle test will show whether cleaning is really necessary. If contamination is still present, but weak, the software cleaning of the nozzles will cope with the problem, and manual cleaning is no longer required.
- Do not use acetone or other strong solvents. They remove colorants, but at the same time they can damage the nozzles themselves, which "burn" due to contact with an aggressive substance. Then the cartridge will have to be completely changed.
- Allow the cartridge to dry after cleaning. It is recommended to wait 24 hours before inserting it back into the printer. This measure also prevents short circuits.
Preparation of tools and tools
To flush an inkjet printer, you need to prepare several items.
- Medical gloves. They will protect against color and black ink that is difficult to wash off your hands.
- Napkins. NSWith their help, the degree of cleaning of the cartridge is checked. They also wipe the nozzles to remove drops of cleaning solution.
- Cleaner. Specialty printer flushing fluids are sold in hardware stores, but they are optional. A simple window cleaner Mr. Muscle. You can also use rubbing alcohol or isopropyl alcohol. The second is preferable: it evaporates faster.
- Cotton buds. Useful when cleaning hard-to-reach places.
- A container with low sides. A cleaning solution is poured into it if the cartridge needs to be soaked.
If the printer is laser, the accessory kit is different.
- Wet wipes. They can easily remove excess toner.
- Screwdriver. Needed to disassemble the cartridge.
- Toner vacuum cleaner. Removes small particles of dye that have fallen into hard-to-reach places. Since the device is expensive, it can be replaced with a conventional vacuum cleaner with a mini-attachment.
Gloves are not required when working with laser MFPs, as the toner does not stain your hands. But you will need a protective mask: the powder can enter the respiratory tract and cause irritation.
Manual cleaning
Inkjet printers are easy to clean, the main thing is to follow safety precautions and use cleaners that are harmless to nozzles. A whole line of printers, regardless of generation, can be cleaned according to the same principle. If the printer uses laser technology, the cleaning principle is different. The design has a fotoval and a magnetic roller, a hopper for toner, which can become clogged.
Nozzles
The nozzles, or nozzles, are cleaned with a solvent, alcohol, window cleaner.
It is not recommended to use acetone and other aggressive compounds, as they can "burn" the nozzles.
It doesn't matter which substance is ultimately chosen for the procedure, the process is no different. Actions are performed step by step.
- Disconnect the cartridge. Pour cleaning liquid into a small container with low sides.
- Immerse the cartridge in the substance so that it covers the nozzles, but does not touch the contacts. Leave on for 24 hours.
- Check the ink mark with a paper towel. Dyes should leave clear streaks on contact.
- Allow the cartridge to dry, install in the printer.
You can also apply the cleanser with a syringe. It is recommended to leave the needle as it will make it easier to dose the volume of the substance. The solution is applied drop by drop to the nozzle area with short breaks of 1–2 seconds, so that the composition has time to be absorbed. After several such instillations, the dried paint will dissolve, it can be removed with a paper napkin.
Another cleaning option is without the use of a cleaning agent. It is used if the nozzles are clogged with dust, or there is little dried paint. The needle is removed from the syringe, a rubber tip is put on. The tip is attached to the nozzles, and the owner begins to draw ink with a syringe through the nozzles. You need to dial a little, then release the air, putting the tip away from the nozzles, then repeat the cycle. Three to four repetitions, and if there is little dirt, the nozzles will be cleaned.
Heads
Wipe the print head with a napkin or piece of cloth. The material should be moistened with the same substance that was used to clean the nozzles.
Do not touch the contacts, they may burn out. After cleaning, the head is allowed to dry.
Rollers
The paper feed roller also collects dust, dirt and ink particles. Accumulated dirt can stain the sheets and leave unpleasant streaks. If the printer has vertical loading of paper, you can do the following:
- moisten half of the sheet with Mr. Muscle;
- start printing and let the sheet go through the printer;
- repeat the procedure 2-3 times.
The first part of the sheet will lubricate the roller with the cleaning agent, the second will remove the remnants of Mr. Muscle. On bottom-fed printers, the rollers are positioned differently and cannot be manually cleaned using this procedure.
If they become clogged, we recommend that you entrust the printer to a professional. To get to the rollers, you will have to partially disassemble the device.
Other items
If other parts of the printer are clogged with dust, use a vacuum cleaner attachment to clean small items. Gently run it over the inside of the turned off printer. The laser printer is cleaned according to a fundamentally different method, since it does not use liquid dye. Printing malfunctions appear due to overfilling of the hopper with powder ink - toner.
To begin with, the cartridge is taken out of the printer by flipping the top cover. Next, the plastic box needs to be disassembled. On some printers, the box is riveted, on others - on bolts.In any case, you will need a small screwdriver to either pry or unscrew the fasteners.
The box often consists of 2 halves and 2 sides. Bolts or rivets are installed on the sidewalls. The procedure is as follows: unscrew the screws, remove the sidewalls, divide the box into 2 parts. Immediately after that, you need to inspect the internal elements: a rubber roller, an imaging drum (a rod with a green film), a toner hopper, a squeegee (a steel plate for removing excess powder). There may be 2 problems:
- a lot of toner has accumulated, it clogs up the hopper and presses on the drum unit;
- damage on the drum.
Mechanical disturbances are visible on the yellow stripes on the film. If they are, you will have to change the cartridge. However, if there is a surplus of toner, a simple cleaning is sufficient. The procedure is carried out in stages.
- Remove the inner parts: drum, rubber roller, squeegee. The squeegee can be screwed on, you have to use the screwdriver again.
- Turn the box over and shake out the toner. To prevent the powder from staining the workplace, it is recommended to use a substrate - newspaper, film, paper.
- Carefully clean the box with wet wipes. Then clean the removed items with them. Handle the drum unit with care, as it can be easily damaged.
- Assemble the box, install the cartridge into the printer. Run a test to check the print quality.
The printer must be unplugged and cooled down during cleaning. Laser MFPs become very hot during operation because high temperatures are required to fuse the toner to the paper. We recommend that you wait about half an hour after the last print before removing the cartridge.
If the print quality has improved but there are still small gaps in the image, check the toner level. If it is lacking, failures also occur. There are gears on the sides of the cartridge, which are unscrewed during cleaning. If the printer is over a year old, it is recommended to lubricate them with silicone.
Another important point: the cartridge has a shutter that normally covers the drum unit. It is mounted on a spring. Before removing the sidewall, you need to carefully pry and remove the spring. When assembling, on the contrary, pull it over the fasteners. When properly installed, the shutter will automatically lower.
Cleaning with the program
Inkjet printers can be automatically cleaned without manual intervention through preinstalled programs. There are 2 ways: through PC settings or special software that is on the installation disc. First way:
- Click "Start", then "Control Panel".
- Open the "Devices and Printers" section.
- In the window that appears, find the printer model that is connected to the PC. Press RMB, select "Print settings".
Second way:
- go to the "Service" section (switch buttons in the upper bar of the window);
- select the operation "Nozzle check", carefully read the requirements and click "Print".
The printer must have paper or it will not be able to run the test. The device will print several patterns to test different colors: black, pink, yellow, blue. The screen will display the reference version: no stripes, gaps, with correct color display.
Compare the reference and the image that the printer has printed. If there are differences, click "Clear" in the final window of the program. Cleaning of the nozzles starts.
An alternative is to open the special printer program and find the "Cleaning" section in it. The program can offer cleaning of different elements: nozzles, heads, rollers. It is advisable to run everything.
You can enable software cleaning 2 times in a row. If after the second attempt the situation is not completely corrected, exit 2: either start cleaning manually, or give the printer a rest for 24 hours, and then turn on the software cleaning again.
It is not recommended to overuse software cleaning. It wears out the nozzles; if overloaded, they can fail.
Inkjet cartridges and laser imaging drums are very sensitive. These elements are easily damaged if not cleaned properly. Therefore, those who are not confident in their abilities are advised to entrust the device to professionals. The cost of the service is 800–1200 rubles, depending on the company.
