What kind of ceiling to make in the hallway?
Making a corridor in an apartment or house cannot be limited to choosing a general style, buying furniture and decorating walls and floors. It is important to understand properly with the ceiling, so that its appearance completely satisfies you, does not create a feeling of dissonance. To do this, you need to follow certain rules, which will be discussed.
Types and forms
Ceilings are:
- Multilevel. Such a ceiling is rarely used in the corridors of residential buildings and apartments. This design shows its aesthetic value over a large area. Most often it is used in other rooms. So, a two-level ceiling differs from a three-level and more sophisticated options only in the number of layers created. The more there are, the stronger the supporting structures on the original tiers should be.
A prerequisite is very accurate marking, but this inconvenience is paid off by the ability to cover communications, change the visible geometry of the space or use a unique lighting scheme.
- Soaring. The floating ceiling effect is achieved through the use of LED lighting. You can create it yourself.
- Curly ceilings, as multi-level options, are formed from plasterboard. It is quite simple to make them, but the resulting structure will be heavy and cannot be disassembled. If the old whitewash does not crumble, you can make such designs right on top of it.
Finish options: pros and cons
For finishing the ceiling, you can use various materials with their own characteristics, pros and cons. Let's consider them in more detail.
Painting
Painting ceilings is acceptable with water-based or water-based paints, but there are other options. So, acrylic compounds with latex will close cracks and allow you to wash the painted surface. If there are concerns about the bay of the apartment, use silicate paint, which can easily tolerate strong moisture.
You can use both a stepladder and a table as a support. In the first case, the support is more compact and reliable and easier to rearrange, and in the second, you do not need to think about where to put the jar, and less often you will have to slide to move to another place. Decision is on you! Regardless of it, be sure to wear a hat, and ideally, bring safety glasses.
It is better to arrange a low ceiling in light colors; by painting the walls darker, you visually expand the space. If the room is high enough, it will be more correct to use darker shades.
Wallpaper
Glueing the ceiling with your own hands is not a bad idea, because in this way you can both save money and create an exquisite appearance by investing an additional amount of money. Professionals say that the upper part of the corridor is best compatible with fiberglass, as well as non-woven or vinyl backed canvases. The paper version is less elegant and does not last as long, although it is relatively cheap.
Whitewash
Given the caustic nature of the composition used, it is advisable to take the furniture out of the room, and if this is not possible, cover it with polyethylene. You can use both chalk and lime whitewash.The bottom layer is applied from a light source (window, lamp, passage to a glazed room), and the second - in the opposite direction. As a rule, you need to whitewash the ceiling every five years.
Whitewashing, plastering and painting are started only after:
- the entire surface is cleaned to concrete or other capital foundation, inclusive;
- treated with a primer;
- beacon profiles are set on the level, creating landmarks.
Drywall
Various suspended and hinged structures are made of drywall, which have gained great popularity over the past 10-15 years. Home craftsmen and professional builders appreciated the absence of the need for plastering and puttying of the rough base. There is no need to remove the old finishes, except for the old hanging elements.
Attention: it is imperative to measure all dimensions with high accuracy and recheck the calculations in order to exclude the appearance of irregularities and defects!
You should not assume that the ceiling made of gypsum board is better than all the others, since it also has an unavoidable drawback - absorption of height. Because of this, it is more correct to use other solutions in a room with low walls. Such as plastic panels, for example.
PVC boards
These are ready-made blocks of polyvinyl chloride, 50x50 cm in size. An important advantage when using them is that there is no need to carefully prepare the base of the ceiling. All preparation for the application of plastic panels will consist only in removing old coatings and any dirt. It is enough to apply glue to the back of the block and vigorously press it to the ceiling to literally transform the room in a few hours.
Plaster
The advantages of the latest methods do not give a single reason to neglect plaster. It is quite simple to apply it - thorough puttying is not required, on the contrary, it will be possible to mask any unevenness of the relief with the material used. You will spend relatively little money, time and effort, but the result will be aesthetically pleasing.
The work proceeds as follows:
- applied to the plastered ceiling with the mixture you bought;
- a relief is formed with a sponge, spatula, float or other tool;
- then it remains only to wait for the layer to dry.
The dried coating can even be painted, and, if desired, in two different colors at the same time, even black and brown, even yellow and green.
Aluminum rack construction
Rack structures made of wood and aluminum are widely used in technical and utility rooms, because they:
- practical;
- aesthetic;
- impervious to water ingress and high humidity
- well mounted;
- are relatively inexpensive.
Aluminum ceiling systems will be one of the best solutions not only for the corridor, but also for the bathroom. Since aluminum suspended units are installed below the slabs, the actual condition of the rough ceilings does not matter. They only have to withstand a stable load. Such systems are arranged simply: it is a series of suspensions to which the supporting profiles are attached (they fix the aluminum strips that create the outer surface).
Aluminum slatted ceiling can be colored, and painting can be carried out in any of the many shades included in the RAL palette. Most often they use white designs (including the entire range of varieties of this color) and beige coatings. Most often, these options for rack and pinion systems are always available, and if you need other colors, you will have to make an individual order. Matte, glossy, semi-glossy surfaces can be found in the assortment of any self-respecting company.
The difference between the slats concerns their width and geometric shape. The plank, produced at a Russian or German plant, will be flat from the face, and in Italy they prefer to make it rounded.It is undesirable to take perforated options, because their whole advantage is optimal internal ventilation, but it is undermined by an overly cold and formal style, more decent in an institution than in a private house or city apartment.
Slats with sides for corridors are not very suitable. Their main place is bathrooms and kitchens. Important: the wall guide must be in tune with the main planks or slotted profile. It is advisable to select a stringer corresponding to the width of a separate rail. In an insufficiently high room, not suspensions, but dowel-nails are preferable. With their help, it is possible to limit the reduction in height to the limit and even attach the material close to the draft ceiling. It is useful to know that in a corridor of small dimensions, there are enough and the thinnest slats (their reserve of rigidity is enough to avoid sagging).
White flat slats are the cheapest, and manufacturers and sellers charge the highest price for chrome-plated products. Two-level structures open up additional possibilities, but it is better to entrust their installation to professionals.
Wooden slatted structure
As for wooden slatted ceilings, their undoubted advantage will be appropriateness in any interior (from classical to modernist). Thanks to modern processing methods from natural wood, it is even possible to obtain lamellas that look like natural stone.
Various arrangement of rails is possible:
- longitudinal;
- transverse;
- diagonal (in some newer versions).
A ceiling made of wood is much more effective than other options at restraining the spread of loud sounds. It is only necessary to strictly observe the technology and install a fibroacoustic plate (the payment for it is fully justified). If the upstairs neighbors are very fond of making repairs or throwing discos, your home will be relatively quiet. For individual interior styles, it is more correct to choose slatted ceilings with small gaps between the elements. Important: a wooden slatted ceiling will help hide even the most unsightly communications and defects of the main surface from prying eyes.
Stretch
Stretch ceilings are used very often. It is not at all surprising that such solutions are regularly used in the corridors. The indisputable advantage of this choice is the speedy installation. You only need a day or two to get the best result. Responsible owners will invariably appreciate the absence of dust and dirt during the installation process. There is also a weak point: if you have not yet stretched all the intended communications at the base of the ceiling, you will have to speed up this process or postpone cosmetic repairs.
Lighting
Adding lighting fixtures to suspended structures is critical for more than just stylistic reasons. So, incandescent light bulbs are incompatible with the stretch fabric, since they can melt it. You will either have to use chandeliers, or resort to LED backlighting, which does not give excess heat. A small chandelier is easy to install, but only on condition that the wiring goes under the frame. Immediately determine the places where the lighting fixtures should be and take care of laying wires to them.
The desire to save money on repairs is quite reasonable, but not in this case. Be sure to entrust the installation of electrical appliances and pulling wires for them to professionals, because the slightest mistake will entail very formidable consequences. The choice of the type of luminaires among all that meet safety requirements is limited only by your personal taste and the style of the corridor. It is perfectly acceptable to use spots as well.
According to most experts, excessively bright light in the corridor is inappropriate. It is much better to use dim lighting there. If the ceiling is completely flat, you can use fluorescent lamps, both open and installed behind the cornices. 50-60 watts should be enough for the whole room.
For gypsum plasterboard surfaces, professionals consider the best choice to be oval niches with lamps, the rays of which intersect, and the lamps themselves are slightly inclined in relation to the plane.
Additional decoration
Stained glass may look pretty attractive, but they alone will not "pull out" a bad design. Therefore, immediately think over the entire style, including auxiliary decor elements, so that later it will be easier to achieve success. Stained glass ceilings are created using frames, and for quite a long time they have not been an attribute of a luxurious and elite interior and can be used almost anywhere. It should be noted that it is almost impossible to make a sufficiently strong frame at home and even in an artisan workshop.
So you have to order it from official suppliers. Stained-glass windows are not only rectangular and round. They often imitate shades and domes in shape, or even are performed in non-standard configurations. It is advisable to use dome solutions in a large corridor.
Lovers of natural wood do not have to choose ceilings from boards or slats. It is quite possible to imitate it with the help of plaster (the coating of the "bark beetle" type reproduces the effect of oak wood, eaten by wood-boring beetles). Mirror materials and structures are able to lighten even the darkest corridors remote from windows. Mirrors help to add elegance and luxury to the room. Facet slabs with hidden suspension systems are especially good.
Mirror tiles can be covered with decorative patterns (ornaments), but it is not recommended to use stretch ceilings with the same effect. It is quite easy to secure them, but the image will be blurry and the seams will be too visible on the canvas. A serious weakness of a mirrored ceiling is its fragility and soiledness. The slightest spot in good lighting is immediately visible.
Decorating ceilings with solid mirrors is quite difficult (harder than single tiles). The reflective foil-coated rack and pinion version is screwed or held in place with cement. This coating is flexible, but it can catch fire and distort the image. Tiled mirrored ceilings, as practice shows, are best suited for the corridor. Their severity of geometry and the rejection of unnecessary decor will only benefit. Important: think over the design in such a way that the shelves placed in the upper part of the wall can be used without problems.
Features of choice
The purpose of the room (hallway or corridor) requires, as already mentioned, to use only durable and non-staining solutions. In long hallways (over 3 m in length), only slatted ceilings with special rail connectors are required. In order to choose the right plasterboard structure, measurements must be made as accurately as possible, leaving a margin of space for built-in lamps and communications.
It is not too easy to choose a ceiling for the Khrushchev corridor, because the dimensions are frankly small. In many cases, they are limited to painting in white tones or covering with lime. This is quite reasonable stylistically, because the light color stretches the room, allows you to get rid of the oppressive feeling at least a little. But now there are alternative solutions, such as light-colored stretch ceilings. For them, use a varnish or glossy canvas.
In a square or rectangular room, if these two visual shades are very valuable. To get rid of the narrowing of the space with a varnish canvas, it is worth taking only its variants with a satin texture. And to save maximum space will help the preference of harpoon or wedge mounting schemes.
The entrance hall of the Brezhnevka apartment will also look advantageous in light colors.Most often, design projects are drawn up individually to overcome the excessive standardization of typical housing. You also need to make sure that the ceiling fits perfectly into them. If you nevertheless chose the usual painting, you should prefer water-based or acrylic coloring compositions, since they are distinguished by good durability, external attractiveness and minimal toxicity.
Design ideas
An interesting solution that allows you to quickly and inexpensively create a beautiful interior is the use of plastic panels and foam tiles. This approach is compatible with a minimalistic style and allows you to hide all the existing flaws.
If the room is designed in the spirit of maximalism, you should prefer:
- ceiling with 3D effect;
- simple stretch ceiling;
- glossy stretch ceiling with photo printing.
Plaster molding is attractive for its naturalness and lack of toxic effect, as well as optimal compatibility with classic interior styles. Important: if the air is dry, the gypsum elements will release moisture, and if there is an excessive amount of it, they will begin to absorb.
Choosing natural wood? Then, in comparison with ordinary boards, beams will look much more advantageous. With their help, it is easy to expand the space. Such designs will harmoniously fit into Victorian, Scandinavian and Provencal styles. Even when the interior is made in a high-tech style, the beam will not become an alien part if it is done discreetly and concisely. And those who want to ensure not only beauty, but also maximum safety in the house, can choose non-combustible polyurethane beam-type structures.
The design of the ceiling in the corridor can serve a variety of purposes. The range of solutions available to the consumer today allows you to finish the upper part of the hallway elegantly and functionally.
