Double bed linen - Russian and European sizes

Many people, including married couples, need double bedding. But the meaning of this name in different states and in different countries may differ significantly. Consumers need to know all the details before going to the store.

A set of bed linen made in Russia must meet the requirements set out in GOST 2005. Such standard parameters are typical for linen also manufactured on the territory of certain post-Soviet states. The smallest width of the sheet in a set of double linen is only 138 cm.This value is taken due to the requirements of another standard, according to which the narrowest berth for 2 people can be 110 cm wide.

The widest sheets in accordance with GOST can reach 180 cm, they are larger both in size and in weight. Their permissible length has two meanings - 214 and 230 cm. Duvet covers in double sets are always unified in length - 215 cm.But their width is indicated in the standard in two ways - 163 or 175 cm. Most of the standard pillowcase options:

• 40x40;
• 60x60;
• 70x70;
• 75x75;
• 80x80.

Because of this, the standard in practice refers to those sizes of linen that are more common than others. It is customary to call double beds or sofas, the width of which is at least 140 cm. The following linen is usually laid on them:

• duvet cover 175x215;
• sheet 180x210;
• pillowcase 70x70.

These linens can be stacked on a 140-150 cm wide mattress. Typical sets include 1 duvet cover, 1 sheet, and a pair of pillowcases. Please note that bedding made in the PRC has the same configuration and dimensions.

The size of the double bed linen euro parameters are as follows:

• duvet covers 200x220;
• sheets 220x240;
• pillowcases 70x70 and 50x70 (2 pieces).

The characteristics of double bed linen produced in Europe are the same as those of Russian products. The amount is almost always the same, there may only be a small addition. According to experts, the European standard is optimal for beds and sofas 160x200 cm. Many Italian sets are ideal for mattresses 200 cm wide. Each includes 2 pairs of pillowcases, so additional pillows must be purchased. The advantages of a Euro-size bedding set over a regular double set will be:

• an increase in the size of the duvet cover and sheets;
• more pillowcases;
• attractive design.

For a 2-bedroom family set, the most common are:

• duvet covers 145x215 or 155x215;
• sheets 220x240, 240x260, 250x250;
• pillowcases 70x70.

You can also choose options with pillowcases 50x70. The bed linen included in the family set allows you to feel good on beds with a width of 160 to 180 cm. It is not recommended to purchase larger items. Their weight, even when using lightweight tissue, is often overweight. This can cause significant inconvenience at night. Family double linen made in Russia or China may include duvet covers of this size:

• 140x205;
• 145x210;
• 145x215;
• 150x205;
• 150x215;
• 155x210.

Turkish textile factories make duvet covers for such sets at least 150x210 cm.The main part of the duvet covers they produce has a size of 160x210 cm. The size of the sheets can be:

• 220x240;
• 230x250;
• 240x240.

In double family sets, there are more and more pairs of pillowcases 50x70. They can be there alone or together with the more familiar square ones (70x70). Pillowcases "transformers" will be a useful novelty. Although their total size is 70x70, it is very easy to remove 20 cm from one side of the product. You can fix the product in the desired position using the buttons.

Sometimes the typical size of the bedding does not suit people. In such cases, it is recommended to use a stretched sheet with an elastic band. In the marking of the dimensions of the kit, its size is indicated with a correction for the height of the side. This height is calculated very easily: you just need to add 10 cm to the height of the mattress. Mattresses 190x120x20 are most often denoted by the formula 190 + 120 + 30 cm, but manufacturers have the right to write this way: 190x120 cm, side 30 cm.

Bedding sets designed for very tall people (from 190 cm), are supplied only for individual orders. When it is planned to put two children aged 0 to 3 years on one bed, the set should have a size of 50x120 cm. Between 3 and 8 years old it is recommended to count on 80x150 cm beds. Schoolchildren and adolescents buy sets for sleeping places 90x190 cm.

The absence of strict standards for the size of double sets can be turned from a disadvantage into an advantage. As a last resort, you can always purchase kits with suitable markings and use them calmly. Choose family bedding according to the size of the blanket. If its width is large (155 or 160 cm), it is best to prefer Turkish products. When there are already square pillows at home, you need to choose pillowcases 70x70 cm.

A suitable sheet is one that 100% covers the sides of the mattress and the foot end of the bed. This means that on a sleeping place measuring 190x120 cm, 20 cm thick, a sheet of at least 160x210 cm should lie.

To choose a comfortable duvet cover, you need to increase the length and width of the duvet by 5 cm. Such an increase is needed when the bedding is made of linen or cotton fibers, which often shrink. But if it is known that the entire fabric has undergone finishing and special processing, it will not "shrink". In this case, you can choose a duvet cover that is the same size as the duvet itself. When the linen is completely or 50% synthetic, the duvet cover should be 3 cm longer than the duvet.

Pillowcases, with rare exceptions, have a size of 70x70 or 70x50 cm. Unlike duvet covers, it is recommended to take them always of the same size as the pillow itself. Sometimes in the marking there is also the designation "+5 cm" after the main numbers. This is a decorative part that does not affect the interior volume. There is no need to select a special pillowcase even when the pillow measures 52x52 or 73x73 cm - such a small difference does not play a special role.

Double linen supplied from Europe has the designation double or full. Typical dimensions for such a kit are:

• duvet covers 205x225, 200x220 or 222x245;
• sheets 240x280 or 220x240;
• pillowcases 50x50 and 70x70.

Comparison with the dimensions of bedding sets adopted in the Russian Federation reveals that in Europe they are 10-15 cm larger. Since many consumers cover large beds and sofas with two mattresses, some sets contain 2 sheets.Please note that packaging that lacks size markings is an almost guaranteed sign of counterfeiting.

A sleeping place, a pillow and a blanket are best measured with tape measures or centimeter tapes. The sheet, which is 80-100 cm wider than the mattress, is easier to fill, it will not hang down in the corners. It is recommended that natural fabrics prevail in the basis of bed linen. But we must take into account that many of them are prone to electrification and are inconvenient to use. Sets that contain a small proportion of synthetic fibers are much more practical.

It is useful to know some of the English terms used in the descriptions of bedding sets. They will help you to check if the dimensions written on the package are actually observed. So, if they write bedspread or bedcover there, then the size of the bedspread allows it to close the pillows, while reaching the floor. Fitted sheets are called fitted sheets. Fitted valance means that such a sheet with an elastic band also allows you to hide the floor area under the bed.

When choosing a mattress topper or a sheet with elastic bands, you will have to measure the height of the mattress. Its value strongly depends on the technology used. When measuring the width, lead the tailor's tape between the two sides in a straight line. The length is determined from the headboard to the lowest point. To be sure if a duvet cover or pillowcase will fit, you need to measure their vertical and horizontal seams.

A double bed set made in Austria and Germany may not contain a sheet. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully clarify the complete set every time. Experts recommend giving preference to pillowcases with deep (from 20 cm) valves. Such elements fix the pillow tightly. The problem is that the accompanying information on the package doesn't tell you what size of the fastener is used.
