Towel dryer bypass
The bypass for the heated towel rail is optional. Nevertheless, it fulfills an important practical function. We will tell you about what this part is, why it is needed, and how to attach it, in the article.
What is it and what is it for?
A heated towel rail is practically no different from a heating radiator. It is considered one of the varieties of the battery, moreover, in most cases it is connected to a single heating system of a residential apartment building. Structurally, the bypass is a jumper between the sections of the inlet and outlet pipe sections at the point of transition of the heat carrier into the general consumption device.
The main task of the bypass is to create a water intake channel bypassing the system.
When applied to a heated towel rail, installing a bypass allows you to create a directed heat flow - this is especially true when performing repair work. The device allows, if necessary, to reduce the pressure in the heated towel rail. In other words, the installation of a bypass makes it possible to disassemble the dryer without having to turn off the entire heating riser.
It is very convenient. Everyone knows how many problems need to be solved in order to close the overall system: submit an application to local authorities, wait for a plumber's visit, and generally prove the legality of such a connection. To skip all these bureaucratic delays, you can simply connect a heated towel rail along with a bypass between the direct and return pipes.
In addition, the additional channel makes it possible to evenly distribute the hydraulic load, that is, to reduce the pressure in the structural elements of the dryer. It is no secret that in the central heating system, especially at the time of pressure testing, the pressure sometimes goes beyond 10 atmospheres.
Not every dryer of a typical diameter can withstand such a load - thus, the bypass protects the structure from breakage.
One more advantage can be noted. The bypass makes it possible to maintain optimal heating. This allows you to provide an effective drying regime and establish automatic control over it.
Types
The material from which the bypass is made directly depends on the water supply system, namely, on what its main elements are made of. Obviously, metal should be bonded with metal, and polypropylene with polypropylene.
The bypass is offered by manufacturers in two versions: automatic with a check valve and valveless. The device with a valve is an automated system, it functions by means of a pump. The principle of its operation is that the increased pressure generated by the pump slightly opens the valve for the unimpeded passage of the coolant.
If such a pump is turned off, the valve will also close.
A bypass without a valve is a system in which the regulation of the heating medium supply is carried out manually. In this case, you need to be especially careful. The slightest dirt on the bypass can cause it to break.
Installation features
The heated towel rail can be connected to both a central heating system and a hot water riser. If both options are available in the building, then the hot water system is preferred. There are several reasons for this: such a heated towel rail can be heated all year round, you can also connect it at any time.To do this, you just need to agree with the management company on the temporary shutdown of the riser, and in general, the hassle of obtaining a connection permit is much less.
If a hot water supply system is not provided in the building, then the connection is made to the heating riser. This will require the approval of the management company, as well as a project plan. To get it, you need to purchase a heated towel rail, along with a technical passport, go to the housing commission and submit an application. After obtaining permission, you will have to order the project, and then, in accordance with it, carry out the installation.
The connection will be considered complete after the representatives of the housing commission accept the work.
The bypass is installed with a special tool. You will need:
-
welding machine - with the welded method of connecting the bypass;
-
a device for the design of pipe threads;
-
grinder - for cutting the pipe;
-
wrenches, as well as adjustable wrenches;
-
Phillips screwdriver
-
pliers;
-
brush.
Installation can be carried out progressively or parallel to the line of the heat carrier supply pipe. Less commonly, the method of connecting the corresponding inputs to the device to direct and return pipes is used. In a situation where the riser is located at a distance of 0.5-1 m from the area of fixing the heated towel rail, then the connection is made via a parallel system - there is no special need for a bypass. In all other situations, a jumper will be required.
Keep in mind that when the dryer is progressively connected to the heating riser, a shut-off valve must not be attached to the bypass. Therefore, when installing it, it is correct to use a pair of valves. For other connection methods, three ball valves are installed: at the point of entry and exit from the heated towel rail, as well as one more on the jumper itself.
Thus, the bypass is placed between the outlet and the inlet to the heated towel rail. Regardless of the connection technique (side, top or bottom), tees will be needed for installation.
In this case, the pipe section itself is fixed perpendicular to the rest of the pipes.
In the systems of the Soviet models, exclusively steel elements were used, in them fixation was ensured by welding, in recent years it has been replaced by a collapsible design. For reliable sealing of the joints of the threads, fibrous materials are used, for example, tow.
The bypass is installed according to a certain scheme:
-
fixing tees at the outlets from a single heating riser;
-
installation of a ball valve tee at the outlet outlet of the ball valve with subsequent fixation of a pipe fragment to it, which forms the place of the jumper;
-
fasteners for the outer end of the bypass at the outlet of the tee attached to the return pipe;
-
installation of ball valves on working tees with their further connection to the entry and exit sections of the heated towel rail;
-
it is very important to thoroughly seal all joints with silicone sealant.
Of course, when using a heated towel rail in the bathroom, it is quite possible to do without a jumper. But this will entail many difficulties, even when it is necessary to carry out the usual replacement of gaskets. In addition, it will create a risk of overpressure.
