"American" for a heated towel rail: functions and device
For the installation of a water or combined heated towel rail, you cannot do without various connecting elements. The easiest to install and most reliable are American women with shut-off valves. This is not just a seal, but a part with which you can perform a high-quality tight joint of 2 pipes. This fitting can be used when installed on metal, reinforced plastic or propylene pipes.
Device
American includes a connecting fitting, a union nut and an oil seal (polyurethane, paronite or rubber gasket). In fact, this is a clutch with a collar and a nut. Thanks to this design, you can quickly connect the pipes by rotating the nut with the valve, and, if necessary, dismantle the fitting.
The adapter is designed for the temperature of the liquid in the heating system or in the hot water supply by 120 degrees. Depending on the type, fittings can withstand different pressures: the limit values are indicated by the manufacturer on the packaging for the product. This information must be taken into account when choosing an American woman.
The surface of the fitting is covered with nickel - it prevents the appearance of corrosion on the part, and also improves its aesthetic qualities. You need to work with an American woman carefully so as not to damage the coating.
Surface scratches lead to gradual rusting of the product, which can quickly deteriorate.
Functions
American is a universal fitting, the main task of which is to completely shut off the water or other coolant going to the coil. Such taps are widely used in heating and water supply systems. The use of American women is convenient: without such a tap, in the event of repairing the coil (in the event of leaks) or replacing it, it will be necessary to disconnect the entire branch, because of which the entire floor will be "cut off" from the water supply system. Having installed an American, you can tighten the nut and shut off the water supply to the heated towel rail.
Advantages and disadvantages
The American has a number of significant advantages compared to other types of fittings.
- Simple and quick installation - no special knowledge or professional tools are required for work. You can install the fitting with your own hands without the help of hired plumbers.
- Reducing the risk of ruining the wall cladding: the American does not need to be rotated, unlike standard threaded fittings, it is enough to tighten it with a wrench.
- Obtaining a high-quality connection - according to the statements of manufacturers and judging by customer reviews, such fittings can stand for a dozen years without leaks.
- The ability to quickly dismantle the heated towel rail without the need to completely disconnect the riser.
- Compact dimensions (in contrast to the classic clutch).
- Possibility of repeated assembly and disassembly.
- Large assortment of parts with different configurations.
This device has no drawbacks. Some buyers complain about the high cost of the fitting compared to other types of fittings. However, the reliability and durability of the American woman justifies its cost.
Range
The choice of American women is extensive: products differ in configuration, material of manufacture, size and other parameters.
Fittings are available with 2 types of fastening.
- Conical. Such fittings provide maximum tightness of the connection without the use of rubber gaskets.They are immune to temperature fluctuations in the system. To eliminate the occurrence of leaks, experts recommend using FUM tape when installing conical American women.
- Flat (cylindrical). They ensure tightness by means of a gasket and a union nut, which creates a tie. Over time, the seal decreases and, due to a change in shape, can allow water to pass through - this is the main disadvantage of options with a flat type of attachment.
American women can be corners. They are designed to connect pipes at a specific angle. There are solutions on sale that are bent at different angles: 45, 60, 90 and 135 degrees. They provide a smooth transition from one direction to another. Thanks to the union nut, the joints fit tightly to each other (without the use of an additional gasket). Straight American is intended for installation of straight pipes.
Manufacturing materials
Plumbing fittings are made from different materials that are durable, resistant to temperature changes and rusting.
- Stainless steel. Steel fittings are the most durable, they are reliable and durable, they are not afraid of exposure to high humidity. They retain their presentation throughout the entire period of use. Steel fittings are in demand due to their low cost.
- Their iron is zinc plated. Most inexpensive fittings. They attract plumbers and do-it-yourselfers for their cost. Galvanized American women are short-lived: after about a year of operation, the zinc coating begins to recede, due to which the iron is exposed to moisture and becomes rusty. Corrosion spoils the aesthetics of the connection and can lead to leaks, therefore, at the first sign of rust, the fitting must be changed.
- Brass. The alloy is characterized by good strength, elasticity, resistance to high temperatures and inertness to liquids with aggressive chemical composition. Thanks to these qualities, American women made of brass are reliable, safe to use and durable. To improve aesthetic qualities, many manufacturers chrome products or apply pigment to them using a powder method. The disadvantages of brass American women are their high price and darkening of the raw alloy during operation.
- Made of copper. The demand for copper American women is limited due to their high price. The choice in favor of this material is given in the case when it is necessary to connect 2 pipes from the same metal. Copper looks beautiful, but only for the first time: after about six months, the fitting may darken and become covered with a green patina. In addition, electrolytic corrosion often affects this non-ferrous metal.
- Made of plastic. For the production of American women, polypropylene is not used in its pure form. Plastic is fragile, so it will not be able to ensure the reliability of the connection of pipes and plumbing equipment. Plastic is used in tandem with metal threaded inserts, which are more durable.
When choosing an American, you need to take into account what coolant the eccentric is intended for, what maximum pressure and temperature the material is designed for.
Mounting
Connecting a heated towel rail using fittings with dimensions of 3.4, 3.2, 1 (d = 32 mm) inches and other dimensions is carried out using the same technology. To complete the work you need:
- cut threads at the ends of the pipes (at least 7 turns);
- choose a fitting of the right size;
- wrap the connection point on the pipe with FUM tape, screw on the fitting with an external thread;
- put the union nut on the American with a side and screw it on until the optimum pressure of the seal is achieved.
During installation work, you cannot use a gas wrench; for these purposes, an adjustable wrench is considered more suitable.
