Many gardeners plant peonies in their suburban areas, as they bloom very beautifully, giving sophistication and elegance to the exterior. In this article, we will tell you in detail about watering peonies.

How often should you water?

Peonies are not very whimsical to care for, but this rule does not apply to watering, especially in the period after flowering. After the plant has bloomed, it needs to recuperate, so watering is simply necessary. High-quality and regular watering guarantees lush flowering in the future, since it is during this period that future flower stalks are laid.

Many novice gardeners are interested in the question of how often peonies need to be watered. First of all, it is worth starting from the weather and the time of year. The first watering in the new year should be done immediately after the soil has completely thawed after frost. It is recommended to add potassium permanganate to a bucket of water during this period. Only 2-3 grams will be enough for one bucket. Such watering will have a positive effect on the growth and development of peonies: their root system will strengthen, and bud growth will also be activated.

The addition of potassium permanganate guarantees soil disinfection, which is very important in the spring season.

The next watering will be required in the summer. It is not necessary to produce it often - although these plants need moisture, it is better to water abundantly and rarely. Of course, in a dry summer, you should increase the amount of peony watering. It is better to water in the evening. At high daytime temperatures, one watering for 10-14 days will be sufficient.

Peonies need special attention when they are actively growing, forming buds and blooming. This period usually falls in the spring and first half of the summer. But after flowering, one should not forget about the plants, because in the second half of summer, the buds are already laid for the next year, so the plants must also receive moisture in the right amount.

Water temperature and volume

As you know, peonies need abundant, but infrequent watering. For an adult bush, it will take about 30 liters at a time. Do not use more water as this can wash out the soil, which will expose the roots. In this case, mandatory mulching is required.

Important! It is not recommended to use cold water, preferably at room temperature. Necessarily the water must be settled.

Watering features

It is very important to do proper watering not only during flowering, since peonies love water at any time of the year. Of course, after planting, it is necessary to water the plants. If peonies grow in open ground, the water does not linger for a long time, as a result, watering such plants should be done more often.

To properly drink peonies, you should not pour water under the bush. It is recommended to dig a groove around the plant at a distance of about 25 cm, while its depth should be about 10 cm.It is in this diameter that all the roots that are responsible for saturating the ground part of the peonies with moisture will be concentrated. Thick roots are located near the stem, which nourish the plants with useful substances, but not moisture. If the plant is young, then it is necessary to make a groove at a distance of 25 cm, and for old bushes - 40 cm.

Weather conditions are of great importance. So, if the summer is rainy and cool, then the peonies do not need additional care. But on hot days, you should use a watering can, because otherwise the flowering of plants will be rather scarce.

Moisture in spring ensures vigorous growth and rapid bud formation. Adequate water in summer is responsible for lush blooming next year, so peonies need care in spring and summer. Already in autumn and winter, plants do not need watering, but one should not forget that it is also necessary to feed, loosen and remove weeds, then the plant will be a worthy decoration of your personal plot.
