Watering strawberries with cold water: pros and cons
Watering is the most important technique in crop production technology. It may seem that there are no difficulties in it. In practice, however, there is a specific watering regime for each plant. Strawberries are also no exception to this rule. Rational irrigation must be carried out with care, with strict adherence to basic standards.
Can I water and why?
The first irrigation of strawberry bushes in dry times is carried out in early spring, when in some cases the atmospheric temperature is not more than 15 ° C. Water of this temperature is perceived as cold. For irrigation, even in cool conditions, it is preferable to use water at room temperature or, at worst, from 18-20 ° C.
In the summer (in hot weather in particular), contrast watering should not be carried out. For this reason, watering is performed early in the morning, when the temperature gap between the atmosphere and water is no more than 5 ° C. Cold water from a well, from a well, or spring water in its structure is considered the most optimal for irrigating strawberry beds, but it can lead to decay of the root system and the occurrence of fungal diseases.
In this regard, before watering, collect this water in a container and heat it in the sun.
So use cold water or not?
When a choice arises between wilting of plants and not too strong stress, the principle answer in such a situation will be affirmative, any serious gardener will prefer stress. Contrary to popular belief, irrigation with cold water does not pose a particular threat to strawberries, since it blooms early. In nature, the plant is often exposed to cold rains.
Attention! It is recommended only irrigation not under the root system itself, but with a uniform distribution over the bed, which makes it possible to create conditions of the same water concentration everywhere.
The justification for watering
The possibility of cold watering in an unfavorable situation does not mean that it will always "save" gardeners. This technique can only be used when the plant justifiably needs a good portion of liquid. The lack of time in itself cannot be a justification for cold watering. At any, even a very small, summer cottage, some other work is always performed.
Therefore, it is advisable to do this in this way:
- collect water into a container;
- in the meantime, you can work in the beds and in the garden;
- wait until the water becomes warm;
- water the berry carefully and according to the recommendations for a particular variety.
The larger the container in which the water settles, the better. The heat capacity of the medium and materials makes it possible to more reliably maintain the required temperature. The use of a barrel does not mean that you will definitely need to walk with buckets. Since you can set aside a little time and cut a tap into the container, from which you can already stretch the hose. Strawberries, in due time, will reward the gardener / gardener for such careful and serious care.
Possible consequences
Any watering of strawberry beds must be done carefully. The ingress of water on the bushes themselves, and especially on the flowers, is strictly unacceptable. The biggest danger of using cold water is for the root system. In the process of formation and ripening of fruits, strawberries must be irrigated in such a way that the berries are kept dry, otherwise they will rot.Sprinkler or drip irrigation is the most beneficial solution for strawberries.
At the end of the cold weather, strawberry irrigation can be carried out not earlier than the last April days or early May. Be sure to wait for the bushes themselves to thaw and come to life. At this time, the use of cold water is unacceptable, no matter how great the rush. Be sure to wait until warming up to room temperature.
Besides care must be taken that weeds do not block the passage of water.
Too intensive watering, instead of positive results, is often harmful - the crop becomes watery.
For strawberries, water is cold, with a temperature of 15 degrees and below. From sprinkling, including when using properly heated water, they refrain from flowering in the flowering phase. Irrigation from a hose is also contraindicated: a little indiscretion, and in a few seconds the root system will be washed out. For irrigation under a black greenhouse film, drip technology is recommended. In the first year of formation, irrigation should be carried out quite intensively for the plants to take root properly.
The recommended time for irrigation is morning or evening. Before watering, it is necessary to check to what extent the water has warmed up. If this is possible during the flowering process of the plant, irrigation should be abandoned. If you really need to water the strawberries, you need to watch that the pistils do not lose pollen.
The use of cold water not only weakens the root system, but also undermines its performance. The productivity of strawberries decreases, it becomes prone to the aggression of ammonifying microorganisms. The consumer quality of the harvested berries is also decreasing, therefore, highly professional agronomists under no circumstances practice such an approach.
