Garlic is a crop that many consider to be capricious both when planting and in the process of leaving. Indeed, it is very important to correctly plant, adhere to a certain schedule when watering, take into account climatic, natural and other conditions. But there is one simple remedy that will help both in cultivation and in the fight against insect pests: for this you just need to water the plant with water and simple salt.

Benefit and harm

Many people are perplexed by the addition of saline solution to fertilize garlic. However, this feeding in moderation is quite beneficial for the garlic crop. The main thing is to properly prepare the saline solution: only in this case it will be beneficial, not harmful. There is still debate about whether salt water is useful or harmful for garlic plantings. Therefore, to begin with, we list the main beneficial properties of such feeding:

  • first of all, salt water saturates the soil with such an element as nitrogen, hence the conclusion - there is no need for additional processing, fertilization;
  • insect pest control - salt solution destroys nematodes (root, stem), as well as onion flies;
  • strengthening culture;
  • prevention of fungal diseases;
  • stimulating the development of culture and its growth.

However, watering with salt and water also causes some harm to garlic plantings:

  • salt water fights not only harmful insects, but can scare away useful ones;
  • depletion of the soil composition is possible - for example, chlorine and sodium contained in salt can displace from the soil composition such an element useful for the development of garlic as calcium;
  • the soil ecosystem can be disrupted;
  • next year, it will not be possible to plant other vegetable crops in the place of garlic without replacing the fertile layer;
  • as for the fight against insects, it is temporary, salt cannot kill the larvae, it blocks them, and they will be activated again in the spring;
  • it was also noticed that salt does not have a very positive effect on the formation of bulbs, however, this can only be with an excess of salt, and then the yield will not be large;
  • soil density will increase;
  • salt can also disrupt nitrogen metabolism in crops - the accumulation of ammonia and other harmful substances in plants is possible.

Terms of use

However, despite the possible problems, of which, by the way, there are quite a few, gardeners still do not refuse to use an effective and affordable saline solution. And since salt water is still a potent remedy, it is necessary to pour it over the garlic with extreme caution. The use of sodium chloride in the garden is quite a responsible matter. Therefore, it is important to know exactly when and under what circumstances it is appropriate.

So, a saline solution is needed when the plantings of garlic are affected by insects harmful to the culture, such as a hoverfly, onion midge. And also an indication for salt water treatment will be an insufficient amount of nutrients, when, for no apparent reason, the garlic stalk turns yellow, and the leaves dry and die off. Fragility of the stems, weakening of the green mass, as well as stunted growth may also be a cause for concern for the gardener.

Important! If the development of the garden culture is quite normal, the garlic looks very good outwardly, it is healthy, then you should not water it with salt water. Frequent watering with a salt content can deteriorate the soil composition and damage the garlic plantings.

Proportions

Preparing a saline solution for processing garlic is quite simple, you just need to adhere to a certain concentration. You need to take 10 liters of water, 100 g of salt should be diluted in it. This volume of solution will be enough to process 2 m 2 of garlic plantings.

  • The first preventive feeding can be done in May or June - it will depend on the weather in the region.
  • The next saline treatment can be done 10 days after the first watering. In a 10-liter bucket of water, you need to pour salt in the amount of 300 g. This is also enough for 2 m 2 of beds with growing garlic.
  • And even 10 days after the next watering - the third treatment. It is more concentrated. So, 10 liters of water should be sprinkled with 400 g of salt. We process all the same 2 squares with a solution.

Other proportions will be in the solution that is used to spray the garlic with salt water. The algorithm for this procedure looks like this:

  • Dissolve 250 g of salt in warm water with a volume of 10 liters;
  • process green shoots with a spray bottle, it is very important to spray in the evening;
  • the next morning, a second spraying is carried out, but with clean water;
  • at the end of the procedure, it will be necessary to water the garden abundantly.

Application technology

In order for the salt water treatment to only benefit the garlic, it is important to do it right, using a variety of techniques such as watering and spraying. The main thing is to choose the processing method according to the problem. For example, top dressing should be used against yellowing.

Spraying

Sprinkling with dissolved salt in the spring can help the crop cope with 2 of the 3 main troubles in the process of growing garlic: these are pests, as well as a certain deficiency of nutrients. The fight takes place primarily in relation to harmful insects such as the hoverfly and the onion fly. Particularly effective will be measures for spraying with a solution of sodium chloride in the fight against larvae and adults of onion flies. Spraying is best done in the evening - this is less likely for the plant to get burned.

Preventive spraying is also encouraged.

Top dressing

You can feed the planting of garlic both in the open field and in the greenhouse. A solution of table salt in the following concentration is suitable for this: 90 g of salt is diluted in 10 liters of water. However, it is not so justified to do such feeding too often - with an excess of salt, all the benefits of such fertilization will be less than the damage caused. The goals of feeding the sodium chloride element are the following points in the development of the culture:

  • it helps in boosting growth;
  • increases the sprouting rate of the bulb;
  • suppresses premature yellowness of leaves.

If you use salt as a mild dressing, the garlic bulbs will grow larger and tastier.

Often, in order to restore sluggish plants, summer residents use urea, but if it is absent, replace it with salt.

Watering

Along with spraying, many people use watering to combat insect pests, which has a number of nuances. So, watering should be exclusively at the root, so it is important to carry out it carefully, for example, using a watering can. Of course, this is quite laborious, but the time and effort spent is paid off by the efficiency of such processing. Also, too strong a water jet can damage the delicate plant. After all, even a slight deformation of the bush can affect the future harvest, and the minimum wound provides a way for any pathologies, including fungi, to enter the body.

Regardless of the technology, the salt composition during the processing of garlic should be applied in small quantities, only then it will not affect the composition of the soil and its quality. Rains and watering after a while will wash out harmful elements from the soil. And also it is worth using the recommendations of experienced gardeners:

  • carry out any treatments with a frequency of 2 or 3 weeks until all pests disappear;
  • watering plantings in the evening, after sunset;
  • when watering, pour the solution only on the roots, trying not to get on the feathers.
