The aesthetic perception of a room or building is influenced by many little things, each of which should harmoniously occupy its own special place, emphasizing favorably one or another fragment of the interior.

The use of polyurethane moldings is an excellent way of decorating rooms, creating style harmony and attractiveness. Moreover, the option is economically justified, since such products are budgetary, elementary in installation and provide ample scope for independent creativity.

What it is?

Moldings - specially processed overlays, various planks used for decoration, bringing interiors to a harmonious look and for correcting minor flaws in finishing. They are narrow and wide (2-20 cm), rigid and flexible. They are often made with relief figures and various ornaments.

Polyurethane moldings are made from polyurethane foam composition (foamed plastic). Due to the method of filling the mold with a polymer mass under high pressure conditions, the products are obtained with a dense but flexible structure. They can be nailed, cut and glued to various surfaces.

Their benefits include:

  • low weight, which determines the ease of working with the material and the ability not to overload the structure;
  • high strength properties;
  • elasticity and pliability, which allows you to create decorative elements rich in shapes and curly furniture linings;
  • with the help of these products, it is easy to imitate artificial or natural materials, for example, wood;
  • installation of products is very simple;
  • bio-independence and water resistance;
  • the ability to decorate the product for gilding, bronze or silver using foil;
  • rich assortment.
  • quite budgetary cost;
  • durability compared to other types of moldings.

Disadvantages of polyurethane moldings

  1. When exposed to direct fire, they ignite, emitting toxic combustion products. But here you can play it safe by covering the surface of the product with refractory paint.
  2. They have natural grayish shades, thus introducing a certain dissonance with white ceilings. Acrylic coatings with yellowish tints will be a good solution here.
  3. As the temperature rises, polyurethane moldings change their dimensions. Therefore, before installation, they should be kept for some time in the room to be finished.

Areas of use

According to their intended purpose, polyurethane moldings are used as decorative elements:

  • in order to harmonize interiors;
  • in finishing works when separating colors and wall texture;
  • to hide the wiring, etc .;
  • when processing joining fragments of plates, wallpaper, turning noticeable disharmonious transitions into attractive finishing elements;
  • when zoning areas;
  • when decorating openings, paintings, furniture, etc.

The aesthetics of the species and the significant shaping of moldings made them extremely popular not only for interior finishing work in wall and ceiling versions, for decorating arches, decorating baseboards, rosettes, pilasters, crowns.

Due to their physical and chemical qualities, they are also used for external work, since they are not afraid of frost, heat, or heavy precipitation.

Let's look at a few examples.

  • When decorating adjacent surfaces (wall-floor) with plinths, polyurethane moldings of different colors and shapes will help hide the seam, and in some cases even turn it into an elegant decoration.
  • A ceiling molding made of this material will be quite appropriate when creating a patterned rosette at the point where the chandelier is attached.
  • With the ceilings increased in height, a polyurethane baguette made in the form of a patterned ornamental painting will become an excellent accent on the wall.
  • For walls, arched, window and door openings, flexible options are extremely convenient, through which it is easy to turn a banal opening into an eye-catching fragment of the interior. Interior openings are easily decorated with elegant pilasters and other elements.
  • A separate area of using polyurethane elements is furniture decor. It is quite easy to form in rooms, for example, a baroque style, decorating wardrobes, fireplaces, mirrors and other furniture with moldings with different colors.
  • Facade moldings are used to supply window openings, facades or under-roof perimeters.

Note that polyurethane moldings are a universal material in the full sense of the word. However, applying it, a number of practical tips should be taken into account to facilitate its correct application in the design of facades and interiors:

  • the larger the finished area of the facade or room, the more massive and complex products should be used when finishing;
  • for small areas, it is more profitable to use light and narrow moldings, placing them vertically;
  • in high rooms, we recommend using horizontal pads and elements that contribute to spatial concealment;
  • placement of moldings contrasting with each other in color is welcomed in large halls and in large areas;
  • do not forget that almost all moldings should be harmoniously combined with the artistic concept of the entire interior;
  • decor of complicated places, rounding of corners and filling of docking points should be done with polyurethane products with various profile sections.

Species overview

The most general classification of types of moldings provides for division by purpose: ceiling, wall, corner. Among these three main types, smooth, flat, embossed, flexible, wide, narrow, colored and other types of products are used.

A number of moldings are distinguished according to the materials of manufacture.

  1. Foam (cheap) with a loose surface (for putty and painting). Fastening method - adhesive.
  2. Polyurethane.
  3. Plastic (poorly combined with other species).
  4. Gypsum (weighty, made by casting). They have been used since ancient times. The most massive ones are fixed with self-tapping screws, and the thinner ones are glued.
  5. Woody - they are fixed with finishing or regular nails (the caps are removed), and carpentry glue is often used. Popular in classic and national interiors.
  6. Metallic - wear-resistant and durable, but suitable for a number of specific styles (high-tech, loft, etc.).
  7. Polymer (flexible options) are used to decorate columns and other rounded elements.

The choice of moldings is so diverse that they can be matched to any element. For example, there are products with decorative coatings that imitate marble, wood, metal surfaces. On the facades of buildings, you can often find cornices or platbands imitating concrete, natural stones, wood.

For arched options, special flexible, elastic overlays are produced, installed on both furniture and doors. At the same time, curls and other decorations artificially age or make them gilded.

To simplify the task when finishing complex perimeters (with protruding fragments, columns, shaped niches and other elements), corner options for moldings are created, which are often performed with patterned ornaments.From a variety of cast products, it is quite possible to choose the most suitable option.

These moldings can be easily painted in any color that suits your taste. It is recommended to use only water-based paints.

Mounting

Installation of polyurethane products is absolutely simple. The differences are only in the order of execution of operations. First, you can paint the moldings, and then attach to the selected location. The second option is the opposite of the first. In the first version, the fragment to be fixed is placed directly on the wallpaper or on an already finished wall. In the second, you will have to bother using masking tape to thoroughly paint.

A number of nuances arise with the selection of methods for fixing products, which depend on their weight and size. A special acrylic adhesive is used for fasteners. Fasteners are also carried out using liquid nails (for large, massive elements). Thin strips are fixed with a sealant or putty, and large (front) parts are recommended to be put on self-tapping screws.

Tools and materials

The preparatory stage of installation starts from the moment of purchasing the necessary tools. For work, they acquire:

  • roulette;
  • pencils;
  • level;
  • knife or file;
  • miter box;
  • primer composition;
  • adhesive;
  • moldings.

Before starting the product, it should be placed in the installation room for temperature adaptation. Then we mark the line for fastening the products. We clean the place of fastening of moldings and treat them with water or a primer.

Process features

The peculiarities of the process include a number of technological tricks. The glue is applied to the products pointwise and evenly. The corner pieces are glued initially. If there are none, then the edges of the slats are cut off with a miter box at 45 degrees, which ensures the correct joining of individual fragments. After that, the rest of the parts are glued between the corners, and the docking cuts are adjusted. At the end of the installation, the joints and individual imperfections of the installed fragments are treated with a putty, sanded and sanded after drying.

Painting

The need to paint polyurethane parts is determined by several reasons.

  1. Unpainted polyurethane strongly collects dust particles, which are difficult to remove from stucco moldings. Caring for painted products is simplified.
  2. No matter how carefully the installation of moldings is carried out, there are always joints between them, especially on the corner fragments. The joints are smoothed out with a putty, which is then painted.
  3. Obviously, the decorative qualities of painted trim elements are higher than unpainted ones. The stucco molding covered with paint looks better and more harmonious in the spectrum of colors of the selected interior, not to mention the possibilities of giving products of any shade.

The choice of paint for polyurethane is a crucial moment, since it dissolves with white spirit and other similar solvents. In other words, the formulations used must contain a water base... These include:

  • acrylic;
  • latex;
  • silicone;
  • mosaic.

The high degree of applicability of acrylic paints is due to a number of advantages of the composition, including acrylic resins.

  1. It has no pronounced odors and is not toxic, since it is produced in a water-dispersible consistency.
  2. The coating has a matte appearance, reminiscent of plaster stucco molding.
  3. Perfectly holds wet cleaning and is resistant to sudden temperature fluctuations.
  4. Shock resistant, durable.
  5. Low cost.

Polyurethane is flammable, and therefore it is often painted with fire retardant acrylic compounds. At the same time, to ensure a high degree of reliability of fire safety of housing as a whole, other finishing elements are also covered with such compositions, along with communications made of metal.

Latex compositions also have excellent indicators, they differ:

  • moisture resistance;
  • a decent level of durability;
  • look great, may have glossy surfaces.

Silicone coatings are more convenient for stucco molding, since their main advantage is that they have excellent dirt-repellent qualities. The silicone composition has a number of other useful advantages. Its only drawback is its high cost.

Technologically, the painting process is carried out in two ways:

  • before installation - easier than post-installation finishing, but does not allow to cover the docking slots with high quality;
  • after installation - a more time-consuming option, which allows preliminary filling and obtaining a high-quality surface.

Preparatory measures include the preparation of the foundation:

  • dust is carefully removed from the surface of the product;
  • then the cracks and cracks are sealed (especially between the walls and moldings) with putty;
  • further, all the walls adjacent to the moldings protect against contamination during painting, for which they use a special masking tape, and cover the furniture and floors with a canvas;
  • the final stage is the coating of the product with a primer to improve adhesion.

When painting, it is better to use a regular brush. The painting process looks like this:

  • first, we prepare the composition by stirring it and, if necessary, adjusting the color;
  • then evenly cover with a thin layer;
  • after drying, repeat the operation.
