All about metal fireboxes
Firewood in the country is a necessary thing. They are needed in order to heat the stove, bathhouse or sauna, only on the wood can you cook really tasty and aromatic dishes on the street. The best place to store them is a metal firebox. This article will tell you about how to choose a metal firebox from a profile pipe for a summer residence, its features, as well as about other types of woodpiles.
Feature and Benefits
An outdoor firewood box is obviously used for storing firewood outside the house. Its main task is not so much storage of firewood in one place as proper storage of firewood and their protection from various kinds of external factors.
Of the main advantages of wood burning stoves, the following can be noted.
- Aesthetic appearance. Piled firewood is not a pleasant sight. And neatly collected firewood under an iron roof gives the country courtyard an atmosphere of cleanliness and tidiness.
- Storage of materials in the necessary conditions humidity and weather protection. The required moisture content of the firewood should not exceed 25%. In fact, this means storing the pieces of wood outdoors, but under a roof. All this can be provided by a firebox. It is not recommended to store wood in a barn or in a warehouse, this can lead to rotting of the material.
- A variety of species. There are many types of metal firewoods and woodpiles, which are produced as street models, as well as those that come with the fireplace.
Varieties
If everything is clear with the material of manufacture (metal), then it is worth stopping at the location of the firebox and the form being made.
According to their location, fire boxes are:
- Street.
- Indoor (most often fireplaces).
- Portable.
- Resistant. This variety is the most common.
Fire boxes can be either open or closed. The latter have improvised doors. Separately, it should be noted that for metal firewoods, profiles (metal shaped pipes) and fittings can serve as material in the manufacture.
How to choose a wood-burning stove for a summer residence?
First of all, you need to pay attention to the convenient shape and size of the woodpile. The firebox should not be too high or unstable. It should be of such a size that it is convenient to both reach and put firewood.
The roof must be made of high quality, without holes or other defects for reliable protection from precipitation. It is best to purchase or make your own firewood boxes, in which the canopy has a slight slope to prevent the accumulation of snow and rainwater.
Street products are best made or purchased with multiple “floors”. Multilevel models are popular in a variety of variations.
The same volume of firewood, stacked in several tiers, has more chances to survive without loss until spring than stacked in one heap (albeit in a woodpile).
It is best to purchase firewood racks or portable models. Even if you do not plan to move the wood burning stove, it will at least protect the wood from contact with the ground and dampness. The recommended distance between the base of the firebox and the ground is 10-15 cm.
A good option for a summer residence is a wood-burning barn. It can be equipped with lattice doors that provide both constant air circulation and protection from precipitation. Indoor fire boxes should be small, interior and preferably made of openwork forging. Such models are not only comfortable, but also look very stylish.
How to do it yourself?
The firebox, as a rule, has a not so complex design, which allows you to avoid the preliminary creation of complex drawings or projects. It will be enough just to have the material, the right tool and the desire to do everything yourself.
Here we will look at a custom wood burning stove on wheels. According to its layout, you can not only make an ordinary woodpile, but also build a small fireplace option.
Necessary materials.
- Wooden block measuring 5x5 cm and 1 meter long.
- Several nails 10 and 5 cm.
- Profile pipes 1.2 meters long and 3/4 inch (20 mm) in diameter, 5 pieces.
- Inch (25.4 mm) profile pipe 1.2 meters long.
- Two small wheels.
And you will also need the following tool:
- sandpaper;
- miniature saw for wood;
- Sander;
- welding machine;
- hacksaw for metal.
Step-by-step instruction.
- Prepare metal pipes for the frame. It is worth noting that you will have to make many corner cuts. They need to be cut into 45 degree angles. The base frame is made in the form of a rectangular frame, so there is no need to cut pipes for it.
- Welding and grinding. 10 cm nails must be welded to the corners of the arch for the subsequent fastening of the handles. Two exactly the same nails must be attached in the place where the wheels are fixed.
- Installation of the mount and the wheels themselves. In the places where the wheels are attached, two nuts must be welded. After securing the wheels, weld on the securing nuts.
- Make handles. Handles need to be made of wood. Their length should be 25 cm. After preparation, they should be sanded and covered with a protective varnish.
- The most important stage: assembly of the structure. First you need to weld the base - a rectangular frame, then weld the arches and corner nails to them, later you will need to hammer the arches into the grooves. The arches are rolled up on the frame, the upper transverse rod is installed, then you will need to attach the wooden rods to the two arches. Using a piece of wood and a hammer, check that the squares are firmly clamped in the corners. Weld the cross member.
- Final stage: painting. But first you need to clean the frame with sandpaper and a damp cloth. It is best to use black paint. It fits perfectly with a metal firebox and hides the welding seams.
In conclusion, it should be noted that the beautiful appearance of the firebox is not the main thing - it should be comfortable and durable.
