The comfort of working and cooking in the kitchen largely depends on the possibility of airing the room. Very often you have to cook and fry at the same time on a gas stove, which in total gives a strong smoke and an abundance of odors, which are not always desirable. To cope with this situation, it is recommended to install hoods above the stove. It is this equipment that is able to purify the kitchen air in the shortest possible time, making it clean and fresh. To choose a hood for a gas stove, you need to know the features of this technique and how to install it.

Peculiarities

The hood in the kitchen must purify the air, remove extraneous odors and promote effective air exchange for the comfort of being in the room. Since the dimensions of kitchens are often small, this household appliance acquires significant importance. Due to the presence of a large number of brands and trade marks, the range of goods on the market is now quite large, but this is what makes it difficult to make the right choice in favor of a quality product that can work at the proper level for a long time.

    In order to choose the right hood for a gas stove, you need to know what to look for in the first place.

    • Device size. It can be small (within 45 cm) and more bulky. The choice should be based on the size of the hob - the larger it is, the larger the hood should be in order to cope with the task as quickly as possible.
    • Operating modes provided by the developer. It is worth evaluating their number and the ability to use several functions at the same time.
    • Assessment of device filters. It is very important that the device has mesh and charcoal filters for high-quality air purification.
    • Features of the control panel. There are modifications that have a touchscreen control panel and those that have buttons. The choice is made depending on the preferences of the owners.
    • Availability of additional functions. The presence of a timer, backlight, interval switching and more is an indicator of a more versatile hood.

    Filters play the most important role in the operation of the device, therefore, when choosing a hood, you need to pay special attention to them.

    The filters inside the device can be grease and acrylic. Thanks to the grease filters, which are in all hoods, the engine of the device is protected. It is noteworthy that there is the possibility of installing disposable or reusable options. The disposable version is created from a material similar to synthetic winterizer and acrylic, and the reusable version is made from aluminum or other metal.

    In addition to differences in internal components, hoods can differ in appearance, having a different shape, type of installation and dimensions.

    The choice of the right appliance must be made based on the size of the room, the size of the hob and the frequency of its use. In order not to be mistaken in the selection of this technique, it is necessary to dwell in more detail on the principles of its operation.

    How does it work?

    The operating principle of the hood is quite simple and similar to ventilation. When the device is turned on, it is possible to remove fumes, unpleasant odors and vapors from the room. In order for the hood to quickly cope with the task at hand, special filters are provided in its structure, which must capture any contamination.Another feature of the structure is forced ventilation, which is turned on for effective air exchange when the amount of pollution exceeds the clean air masses.

    Additional functions will be good helpers for any housewife, therefore it is worth choosing a model that will create optimal conditions for working in a small room. When choosing a hood for the kitchen, it is worth examining its internal structure, paying special attention to the filter system. According to this criterion, there are two types of device:

    1. recirculating - allows you to clean the air from dirt and grease by means of filters, after which the same air mass returns to the room;
    2. flowing - thanks to it, air is purified, which is drawn in from the kitchen and released outside the apartment with the help of ventilation.

    The flow hood should be connected to the general ventilation of the house. Due to the presence of an air duct, this process is carried out conveniently and quickly. Clean air is supplied through windows or air masses coming from other rooms. The recirculation hood has no connection with ventilation, therefore the same air circulates in the kitchen, being cleaned thanks to the device. In order for the intake and outflow of air masses to occur efficiently, the hood has a powerful motor.

    The choice in favor of one or the other type will help to make a ventilation duct, which is available in any kitchen of a multi-storey building. If it is located near the cooking place, then it makes sense to install a flow hood, if it is far away, then a recirculation hood. If the house is very old, ventilation can be clogged and air will pass through it with difficulty, in which case it is also worth using a recirculation device or purchasing a combined one that can work in both directions.

    This option includes both an air duct and filters that can be used seasonally. For the winter period, it is better to use the principle of circulation, so as not to cool the room, and in the summer to use an air outlet.

    To ensure the correct operation of the hood, it is worth placing the device exactly above the gas stove so that the combustion products enter it immediately and do not pollute the air.

    Depending on the appearance of the hood, it can be installed on the ceiling, wall or built into a kitchen set. Ceiling and wall variations usually have a design that allows you to make this device organic, easy to fit into the room.

    Types and their characteristics

    In view of the huge variety of designs and appearance of hoods, it is worth dwelling on this issue in more detail. The design of the device can be of several types.

    • Dome - it is placed over the stove and looks like a dome that hangs over the cooking area. Most often it has a double air filtration system. These devices have large dimensions, which do not degrade the appearance of the room, as they usually have a very stylish appearance that imitates a fireplace. There are several types of dome hoods: wall, corner, island.
    • Hidden or built-in - is the most inconspicuous household appliance in the kitchen, because it hides in furniture. The convenience of this option is that it is possible to save space, which is already scarce in the kitchen. For those who are looking for an effective device that will not be an eyesore every day, a concealed range hood is the ideal option.
    • Telescopic - this hood is also installed in a kitchen unit, but the grease filter panel can be pulled out to ensure maximum performance.
    • Flat - has a rectangular shape and small thickness. It is often a recirculation device that can be installed anywhere away from the ventilation shaft.Flat hoods are usually the lowest cost, easy to install and easy to use for any family member. It contains filters that capture any air pollution well and actively fight them.

    Such hoods can be installed parallel to the stove or on top of it.

    • T-shaped - outwardly resembles the letter "T", since the box has an elongated rectangular shape, and the base is flat. It is usually placed directly above the stove.
    • The box-type one is distinguished by its simplicity of design - it can be a wide pipe or a box, which is placed above the stove. Most often, this type of equipment has an island arrangement, that is, in the center of the kitchen.
    • Oblique - looks like a T-shaped one, only the base is located at an angle. The convenience of this design is in its small dimensions and stylish design, which will complement the kitchen. The device is mounted only on the wall and can be either recirculating or flowing.

    Since the cooker hood is an important element in the cooking space, attention should also be paid to its size. Modern devices can have a wide variety of dimensions. The smallest in width is only 35 cm, and the largest is 120 cm. Most often, the size of the hood corresponds to the hob of a gas stove, which is usually 50 or 60 cm wide. Hoods with such dimensions are the most popular.

    How to choose?

    In order to always have clean and fresh air in the apartment, it is important to purchase a high-quality and powerful hood for the kitchen that will cope with pollution in this room. To choose the right household appliance, you need to know what to look for.

    The first factor to keep in mind is the type of installation, which can be:

    • wall-mounted;
    • ceiling;
    • insular;
    • angular.

    Depending on the free space, the presence or absence of hanging furniture, as well as the location of the stove, it is worth choosing the type of device.

    The next point is the mode of operation:

    • exhaust air;
    • circulating.

    The first type is more productive and powerful, therefore, in kitchens with large dimensions and frequent cooking, it is worth choosing just such hoods. The downside in this case is only the noise that is created in the process of cleaning air masses.

    The second option is suitable for those kitchens in which there is very little space and there is a need to build the hood into the furniture, which is an undoubted convenience. The disadvantage of such devices is that you will have to wash out the grease filters and replace the charcoal filters from time to time.

    If the kitchen conditions allow, it is worth choosing a combined hood that will cope with air purification, and the hostess will have the opportunity to choose one or another mode of using the device.

    It is important to pay attention to the performance of the hood. To choose the most powerful device, it is worth comparing the air purification rates and the volume of outflow of contaminated air masses. If the hood uses ventilation at home, then you can select equipment with a low capacity of 200-250 cubic meters per hour. If it is possible to make an air outlet leading directly to the street, it makes sense to buy a more powerful device with indicators of more than 350 cubic meters per hour. In a small room, polluted and harmful air accumulates much faster, therefore it is important to buy a hood with the highest performance - at least 400 cubic meters per hour.

    For the correct selection of the hood, the type of control is also of certain importance, which can be mechanical and electronic. The first option is simpler, because thanks to the use of buttons and switches, you can set the necessary tasks for the device. The electronic type is more versatile, as it has many additional functions and programs that are displayed on the display. The most advanced is the touch control option, like on smartphones.

    Particularly noteworthy is the noise figure that the hood has during operation. It is best to choose those devices that are of the least importance, because they will work the quietest. The volume will depend on the number of motors, their power and the design of the device. If the hood is powerful and has two motors, then it will make more noise.

    If the air outlet and filters are not cleaned for a long time, it will also increase the operating noise. To minimize the volume, manufacturers hide the motor under specialized insulating materials or give special recommendations for installing household appliances.

    For those for whom it is important not to overpay on the meter for electricity, you need to look at the energy consumption of the device that you want to buy. Powerful equipment consumes a large amount of electricity, low-power hoods (up to 150 W) are suitable for those who will use them very rarely and for a short time. The power is affected by the number of motors, which can be 1 or 2 in one device. One motor is suitable for infrequent use, the hood will emit a minimum of noise and consume a little electricity. Two motors are quicker to clean the air in a large enough room, but they will make a lot of noise and consume a lot of electricity.

    For those who cook on an irregular basis and the number of dishes varies, it is important to be able to adapt the hood to suit your needs. Having device speeds can help with this. For one pot or frying pan, you can set the minimum speed, and if you use 2-3, or even 4 burners, then you need the maximum speed. The higher the speed, the louder the device will work and the more electricity will be consumed.

    Modern hoods are complemented by lighting that looks impressive and can be used as additional lighting for the work area. There are several lighting options:

    • incandescent lamps;
    • halogen lamps;
    • LED lamp;
    • neon lamps.

    Incandescent lamps consume the most electricity and do not last long, halogen lamps are used by mid-range devices, they are small and economical. LED bulbs are new, but they are compact in size and have excellent energy efficiency. Neon bulbs have an orange tint and serve for a very long time - more than 10 years, which is their main advantage.

    There are two types of hood filters: charcoal and grease filters. In order for the device to work effectively, it must be cleaned in time; the presence of a pollution indicator will be a good helper in this matter.

    After evaluating all the factors by which the hood is selected, you can choose the most optimal option that suits you both in terms of price and quality of work.

    Installation rules

    To properly install the hood in a private house or apartment, you need to know the rules and regulations by which this procedure is carried out. The most important factor to consider first is the height of the appliance above the gas stove. According to the norms, the hood should not be lower than 80 cm from the hob, otherwise there is a great risk of damage to the outer shell of the device, and in the worst case, fire. According to GOST, there are such standards:

    • the distance from the straight hood to the stove is at least 75 cm;
    • if the hood is inclined, its lower edge should be at least 55 cm from the surface of the stove;
    • in the case of direct exhaust, the air intake is placed at least 65 cm above the gas stove.

    To hang the exhaust equipment correctly, you can invite a professional or take on the job yourself. If the second option was chosen, then you will need to carefully study the recommendations of the manufacturer of both the hood and the stove, and tips for installing such equipment.

    New household appliances are installed only after measurements have been made and the location of its future location has been outlined.

    The device must hang exactly above the stove in order to take in polluted air as quickly as possible, therefore it is worth checking the correctness of the selection of the preliminary location for the device and, if necessary, adjusting it. The next step is to work on the exit to the ventilation. The location of the shaft should help in choosing the most convenient option for bringing the air duct into it.

    If the hood is built-in, then the furniture should have a place for it and make the appropriate holes.

    Once all the preparations have been completed, you can begin installing the equipment. It is worth working carefully, without lifting the hood by the decorative areas that may break. Depending on the type of device, it can be mounted on the ceiling, wall or inside furniture, therefore the fasteners are installed where the device will be screwed. After installing the main part, you need to put pipes leading to the ventilation. If the air vent is brought out into the general ventilation of the house, then for work you need to purchase a corrugation or use a plastic air duct, also use an adapter, clamp, sealant and metallized tape.

    When everything is assembled and checked according to the standard height from the stove, you can try to connect the device to the network and check its operation. The hood can be operated when plugged into an outlet or connected directly to a cable. You need to work with the electricity off, wearing gloves, connecting phase to phase and zero to zero.

    At the end of all installation work and turning on the hood, you need to check if there is no current flowing to the equipment case. If everything is in order, then the device is completely ready for use.
