Among all varieties of climbing roses, suitable for growing in the climatic conditions of Russia, a special place is occupied by those that belong to the Irish selection. Among them is the "Casino" - a view, the planting of which is preferred by an increasing number of domestic summer residents. This is due to the spectacular appearance of this variety of roses, the ease of caring for them and many other tangible benefits, the description of which should be given special attention.

Main characteristics

The variety in question, also known as Casino Climbing Rose, appeared thanks to the efforts of McGready breeders in the early 60s of the last century. The botanical description of this variety is presented below:

  • a spreading bush, the height of which can reach 4 m, and the width - 1.5 m;
  • flower diameter - 10-11 cm;
  • shiny leaves with an oblong shape;
  • the number of flowers on the stem - up to 5;
  • the presence of long and sharp thorns;
  • flowering period - from early summer to autumn;
  • the number of petals is around 40;
  • the recommended growing area is VI (USDA).

As for the most significant features of the "Casino" rose flowers, these include their spectacular yellow color, goblet shape and pleasant aroma. The appearance of its petals is also worthy of mention: the inner ones have a rich shade and are smaller in size, while the outer ones are paler and larger.

On average, over the full growing season, the rose in question grows by 1.2-1.3 m. It blooms twice - at the beginning and at the end of summer, singly and with whole brushes, respectively, due to which it is attributed to the remontant category. Given the characteristics of this variety, its representatives are successfully used to decorate fences and semi-arches, the height of which does not exceed 3 m.

Also, masters of landscape design note that the climbing rose "Casino" can be planted both separately and in whole groups (depending on the characteristics of the site and the preferences of its owner).

Advantages and disadvantages

Talking about the advantages of the described climbing rose, first of all, it is worth noting its high decorativeness. Such plants effectively decorate the adjoining territories. In cut form, they are used to create original floristic compositions.

Other significant advantages of the "Casino" rose are:

  • abundant flowering;
  • good resistance to atmospheric precipitation;
  • sophisticated tea aroma;
  • long-term preservation of freshness in the cut;
  • rapid growth.

Also noteworthy is the low susceptibility of the variety in question to fungal infections. Based on the responses of domestic summer residents, it can be argued that representatives of this species are distinguished by strong immunity, and therefore practically do not get sick.

The benefits listed above were appreciated by the Royal Rose Society, who presented the Casino with the highest honor in 1963, and by the Florida World's Fair, who named it the 2001 Climbing Variety of the Year.

The disadvantages of the described variety are insignificant. These include the stiffness of the shoots, characteristic of all roses from the climber group, and not the highest winter hardiness. The last feature of the variety requires the obligatory arrangement of a shelter from temperatures falling below -7 ° C.If this condition is ignored, the "Casino" rose freezes, but recovers quickly enough.

Seat selection

When deciding on a place for planting the described plant, you should give preference to well-ventilated light areas with moderate shading at lunchtime. It is strongly not recommended to expose the "Casino" to direct sunlight in order to avoid the appearance of burns on the petals of its inflorescences. If the owner of the rose wants to plant it near the wall, he should maintain a distance of 60 cm (or more), which is comfortable for the root system of the plant. It should also be borne in mind that the "Casino" variety does not tolerate the close arrangement of trees and large shrubs.

As for the soil that is optimal for the climbing rose in question, it should be fertile and have a slightly acidic reaction (pH value - from 5.5 to 6.5). Another important condition is the deep occurrence of groundwater, which minimizes the likelihood of harmful oversaturation of the plant with moisture.

Landing rules

When the place for the "Casino" rose is chosen, you can start planting it. This procedure is not complicated and involves the step-by-step execution of the following actions:

  • dig a hole, the depth and diameter of which is 60 cm;
  • place a drainage layer of gravel or gravel at the bottom of the created hole (recommended thickness is 10 cm);
  • place a layer of a combination of earth and humus, the thickness of which is equal to the previous one;
  • fill the garden soil into the hole;
  • treat the roots of the seedling with a mixture of clay soil with a lot of water and gently spread them;
  • place a young plant in the hole (the root collar should be 3 cm below the surface of the earth);
  • fill the soil into the depression and compact it;
  • water the rose thoroughly.

Particular attention should be paid to the choice of planting material. Practice shows that the "Casino" variety retains its qualities only when propagated in a vegetative way. Experts advise harvesting cuttings cut from young, but already matured bushes at the end of the first wave of flowering.

Care features

In order for the climbing rose "Casino" to be healthy and delight its owners with regular and abundant flowering, you should take care of it, guided by the recommendations listed below.

Watering

Moderate watering is optimal for roses of the described variety, while they do not tolerate excess moisture. In the absence of rain, a young plant needs about 20 liters of water once a week, and adults - 1.5 times more. If precipitation occurs, the owner of the "Casino" rose should take into account the degree of their intensity.

When watering a plant, it is necessary to avoid getting water on its stems and leaves. Following this advice will minimize the likelihood of developing fungal infections.

Top dressing

One of the most important requirements, the observance of which contributes to the rapid growth of the climbing rose in question, is the timely and regular application of fertilizers. In spring and early summer, the plant needs to be fed with organic matter mixed with potassium and phosphorus supplements. At the same time, spraying with preparations containing manganese, boron, copper and other trace elements should be carried out.

In the second half of summer, rose "Casino" needs phosphoric fertilizing, which contributes to abundant re-flowering. With the onset of autumn, it is advisable to fertilize the plant with potash preparations, the timely assimilation of which helps to better adapt to low temperatures.

Garter

Tying up the bush should be done from the moment it is planted. To do this, you need to install the support grid at a short distance from the wall or drive into the last hooks to pull the wire.

The main shoots of the rose must be placed horizontally or in a fan, for the lateral ones, a vertical orientation is desirable.The plant is tied to a support using a strong wire with a soft polymer coating to avoid damage to the stems.

Pruning

The procedure in question is carried out in the spring, during the formation of buds in the lower part of the bush. It involves the removal of shoots that have not survived the winter. It is advisable to cut the casino rose in summer, as getting rid of wilted flowers stimulates re-flowering. If the bush has grown too much, its excess shoots must be removed in the fall.

Upon completion of the described procedure, all sections should be thoroughly powdered with crushed charcoal or activated carbon. This action accelerates the healing of wounds, drying them and preventing the development of pathogenic microflora.

Shelter for the winter

Given the negative effect of severe frost on the plants of the presented variety, with the onset of persistent cold weather, they must be carefully covered. To solve this problem, spruce branches are ideal - branches of coniferous trees, which are placed above the rose removed from the support and between its shoots.

Above, you need to install a wire structure, elevated above the covered plant by about ¼ meter. Such a frame should be covered with polyethylene and a material with good thermal insulation properties, leaving several ventilation holes.

Diseases and pests

Despite the high resistance of the "Casino" rose to pathogenic microflora and pests, in some cases it may suffer from their harmful activity (as a rule, due to violation of agricultural practices). The variety in question is most often worried about two diseases.

  • Powdery mildew. The cause of the misfortune is fungal microflora, the development of which leads to the appearance of a whitish-gray plaque on the stems and leaves. To get rid of it, it is necessary to remove all affected areas of the plant, and treat the rest with a systemic fungicide.
  • Bacterial cancer. A characteristic sign of the disease is the appearance of large growths on the roots and neck. Counteracting the disease involves the careful removal of pathological formations and the treatment of problem areas with a solution of copper sulfate.

As for pests, sometimes the "Casino" variety can suffer from the invasion of thrips, spider mites and aphids. The optimal solution to this problem is the timely use of broad-spectrum insecticides.

Thus, the climbing rose "Casino" can be safely recommended to every gardener who is looking for an effective and unpretentious decoration of his site. This variety has met the expectations of the overwhelming majority of owners from the moment of its inception to the present.
