Peonies of the Paula Fey variety belong to the selection of terry varieties. The variety was bred in the United States around 1970. The petals are painted in a juicy raspberry hue, have a pleasant waxy texture that shines, while the center is yellow. In diameter, they can reach 20 centimeters.
Bushes with peonies themselves are compact, rounded, reaching a height of 75–80 centimeters. The stems are powerful, the leaves have a rich green color, they shine.
Paula Fey is an early flowering peony. Already with the arrival of the first warmth, luxurious crimson flowers will delight in the flower beds. Moreover, the flowers of this variety have a wonderful sweetish aroma, which is simply impossible to resist.
An interesting fact is that the variety has received a special award from the American Society of Peony Lovers. The lists of medalist varieties are not so long, but "Paula Fey" is present in it.
Usually, the peony reacts especially to rain and windy weather, trying to completely close.
Landing
Most often, peonies are planted in spring or autumn. First you need to choose a site where the plant will grow, it is best to give preference to a partial shade place where a sufficient amount of light enters. After all, peonies themselves are considered light-loving plants.
However, lowlands are not suitable for planting, where plants can begin to rot from stagnant water.
Before planting peonies, you should dig holes and fertilize them if the soil is not very good and not loamy, and you can also add a little sand, compost and humus to it. The holes are dug 50 by 50 or 60 by 60 centimeters, observing an interval of about 1.5 meters from each other, after which they are buried so that the soil sags and compresses.
It is advisable to put a drainage layer at the bottom of the pits (it should not be more than 15 centimeters). Disembarkation should be carried out after the arrival of 7-14 days. When planting, the plants should be buried in carefully so as not to damage their rhizomes.
It is very important to plant peonies shallow, otherwise they will not even bloom, increasing only the green of the leaves. For good flowering, a sufficient planting depth is considered to be about 5 centimeters. After planting, the plants should be watered abundantly.
It is also worth noting that in the first year of planting, and even, perhaps, in the second, the plants may not bloom, but this does not mean anything bad at all. Usually the first year is considered an adaptation year. In the years to come, with proper care, things will work out.
Care
For favorable growth, varietal peonies should be properly looked after, namely:
- water regularly;
- loosen;
- remove early buds and faded flowers;
- carry out preventive spraying against insect attacks.
Watering should be regular but moderate... In no case should peonies be transfused, otherwise they may get sick. Especially in moist soil, fungi quickly grow, which infect not only the root system, but also the leaves with flowers.
When preparing peonies for winter, especially young ones, it is best to cover them. But large adult plants can overwinter and so.In the spring - before flowering - the plants can be fertilized. The last fertilizer is usually applied in the fall, when the bushes are preparing for wintering and are completely pruned.
Usually, peonies grow in one place for an average of 3-5 years, after which they can be transplanted and separated. But it should be understood that after such a time, the root system of an adult peony will be very large, therefore it will be more difficult to separate the flower.
For the prevention of diseases and insect attacks, plants can be sprayed special herbal infusions. Very often chamomile or dandelion is used for these purposes. They are completely safe for both plants and humans.
If the situation is completely critical and ants, whitefly or other insects attacked the peonies, and there are a lot of them, then in this case you can use special insecticides.
You should work with them only according to the instructions, not forgetting about personal safety precautions.
