For decoration, giving a blooming and aesthetic look to a personal plot, you cannot do without flowers. Peonies are perfect for this.
Peonies features
This plant is named after the ancient Greek god Pean, who cured ailments. Many types of peonies are used in folk medicine in the treatment of disorders of the cardiovascular system, kidneys, diabetes mellitus, arthritis. But care should be taken when using this plant as a medicine, since peonin - the pigment in peony flowers - is poisonous. Consultation with a specialist is required before treatment.
Peony is the oldest perennial and herbaceous plant. In the caring hands of the owner, with high-quality care, the peony will delight with its smell and luxurious flowering from 10 to 15 years.
In the peony family, where most of the plants are herbaceous, scientists distinguish one genus and 40 species. All peonies are classified according to the following criteria:
- duration and period of flowering;
- shape, size of peduncles;
- petal color;
- stem height;
- brightness and saturation of the aroma.
The Joker peony variety is an excellent representative of its family. Botanists attribute it to terry bomb-shaped peonies.
Description
The Joker's appearance is delightful throughout the entire flowering period. Strong stems grow up to 1 meter in height. Roots are fleshy and tuberous. The petals are oval, corrugated. The diameter of the flower varies from 12 to 15 cm. The flowers are strongly doubled and, when fully blooming, look like a large ball.
"Joker" has color variations from delicate light pink to deep dark pink. Depending on the flowering period, the flower stalks have different colors. At the beginning of flowering, a dark pink hue is observed, and then it is replaced by a lighter version.
Landing subtleties
In the process of planting a peony, several stages are distinguished.
- The landing site is selected. The flower grows well on the sunny side in nutritious loose soil with a neutral alkaline reaction. He does not tolerate stagnant water and does not like drafts.
- The ideal soil option is loam. If clay prevails in the ground, then it should be diluted with sand, peat or humus. With an excess amount of sand, clay and humus are added to the soil. If the site is rich in peat, then it is necessary to add ash and organic matter to the planting site.
- A week before planting a flower, you need to dig a hole, at the bottom of which to put drainage. Broken brick or crushed stone can be used as drainage. Then add compost, humus, 150-200 g of superphosphate, 90 g of lime, 350 g of wood ash, 150 g of potassium sulfate. From above, the pit is covered with compost again.
- After the soil has settled (after about a week), plant rhizome so that the upper kidney is not lower than 4–5 cm underground.
- Tamping.
Plant care
Peonies can grow for a long time and bloom profusely in one place. But for this you need to properly care for them, to know the intricacies of their cultivation.
Experts recommend florists to carry out regular feeding for the proper development of the plant. It is necessary to feed at certain periods. The first feeding is carried out with nitrogen-potassium fertilizers (10–20 g of nitrogen and the same amount of potassium per bush) immediately after the snow has melted from the ground.
The second time you need to please the peony with fertilizer (nitrogen - 10–20 g, phosphorus - 5–15 g and potassium - 10–15 g per bush) during its budding period. For the third time, top dressing (phosphorus and potassium, 10–20 g each) should be done immediately after flowering, during the period of bud formation.
It should be noted that when applying fertilizers, it is imperative to be careful in the dosage, since the increased nitrogen content contributes only to a significant growth of foliage in the absence of flowering.
It is important to know that peonies absolutely do not tolerate the increased acidity of the soil, therefore it is useful to add ash to them once or twice a month... In the first year after planting, it is recommended to remove the buds.
This variety of peonies has excellent frost resistance. In winter, without additional shelter, the plant will not freeze. But experienced gardeners, for peace of mind and confidence in the safety of their flower pet, are advised to cover it with spruce twigs for the winter. Young bushes (up to 3 years old) must be covered for the winter without fail.
