Many of us have personal plots. It is customary to plant flowers near the house so that they will please the eye all summer. However, this is where the problem arises. It is expensive to buy seedlings, but it is not always possible to grow them yourself. The situation is especially bad with the planting of petunias, despite the fact that this is the most unpretentious and long-flowering plant. It is still very beautiful and diverse in its shapes and colors. Such a miracle, undoubtedly, one would like to have under the window. In order for the desire to come true, you need to use some simple tips.

What is this plant?

Petunia has been known for a long time. Even Jean-Baptiste Lamarck did some research and considered it a kind of tobacco. This plant is annual. Genus - herbaceous, family - Solanaceae. They brought it to our region from South America. Now in Russia, it grows everywhere: in the summer on the balcony, in the garden, in city flower beds and in the vegetable garden.

If the seeds have sprouted, it means that the flowers will delight you all summer and will not die. The only problem faced by greenery lovers is that this plant does not grow well. Many people complain that they seem to buy proven seeds from a reliable manufacturer and show special diligence to plant according to all the rules, however, no matter how hard you try, there is no sense.

And in others, on the contrary, petunia grows correctly and rages with its flowering, despite the fact that no one planted it specifically in the flower bed. In addition, this capricious plant is surprisingly fragrant even when the soil is not fertilized, and there are no special conditions, and sometimes watering is almost absent. And it often happens that a plant begins its life cycle in a crack in the asphalt and grows so much that then it has to be removed so as not to interfere.

How can this be explained? Some amateurs say that this annual lives only where it likes it, as it is special. Others just laugh and answer the unsuccessful gardeners that it is not even worth planting, it will sprout by itself like a weed.

For those who have long been disappointed in planting a beautiful petunia with their own hands, we can recommend using the original advice to get the desired result. Moreover, the following argument speaks in favor of self-growing seedlings: you yourself can choose seeds of a very rare variety... The market will definitely not offer you this.

Planting petunias for seedlings

Breeders improved garden petunia 100 years ago. By the way, this category has 3 types: multi-flowered (the diameter of the flowers is about 8 cm), with large flowers (flowers reach 13 cm), small-flowered (the most unpretentious, have flowers of 4 cm and are popular). In order for the plant to germinate and give strong shoots, some amateur gardeners advise planting petunias on seedlings in the snow.

In order for the plant to germinate and give strong shoots, some amateur gardeners advise planting petunias on seedlings in the snow.

You need to start with the selection of the soil. It should be "like fluff". For complete confidence in the result, do not forget to disinfect the mixture for seedlings with a manganese solution.

For complete confidence in the result, do not forget to disinfect the mixture for seedlings with a manganese solution.

It is necessary to dilute the required amount of solution (medium consistency) and add it to the soil. Sowing should be carried out a day after treatment, since bacteria die for a long time.After disinfecting the soil, add fertilizer to it (dosage instructions are on the package). Potassium humate and saltpeter are suitable for petunias. Prepare the soil with the expectation that you will soon need a large amount of it. When you transplant young shoots into larger containers, then you will need to fill them with earth of the same composition in which the plant has germinated and adapted.

Take clean plastic disposable cups or seedling containers. We distribute the prepared soil in them and press it down a little (we compact it).

Take petunia seeds separately and mix with sand.

It will melt over time (gradual melting will allow the seeds to sink into the soil to the desired depth).

So, with the snow, you will also bring in the necessary moisture.

Stratification promotes good germination, and melt water enhances the result.

We cover the cups with lids or polyethylene cut to size. We put the houses on the windowsill from the sunny side. If there is not enough light, then you need to connect an additional source.

By using the snow, you will help the seeds to distribute themselves and go deeper into the soil.

By using snow, you will help the seeds to self-distribute and go deeper into the soil.

After which it is necessary to open the lid or polyethylene for about 2 hours a day so that the shoots can breathe

It also happens that you have sown many more seeds in one container than required. They came up too tightly. In this case, it is necessary to thin out the seedlings with tweezers. Choose the smallest and weakest plants.

Watering is done as needed. For these purposes, use a dispenser bottle. Try not to overmoisten the soil.

Soon the flowers will grow up, 2 leaves will appear on them.

Then they need to be transplanted into separate containers with prepared soil (should have remained in surplus after sowing the seeds). This is called picking seedlings.

Loosen the soil before planting (you can use a toothpick or a match). Don't damage the roots. Plants are very weak and may die.

In order for the plant to subsequently bloom magnificently, it must be pinched.

This procedure is carried out to increase the number of lateral processes, otherwise our plant will have the shape of a "butt".

The first pinching is done when the plant reaches 8 centimeters.

Then you need to feed. When the shoots reach 10 centimeters, we do the second pinch. This will increase the number of shoots on the side and give volume in the future due to lush flowering. After the petunia is planted in a permanent place, pinching and feeding should be done regularly.

Landing dates

It all depends on the length of daylight hours, as well as on the characteristics of the variety that you purchased.

Try not to choose too early for sowing. The plant may die due to lack of heat and sunny days, or it will stretch out and give wrong shoots. They will be weak, susceptible to disease, and brittle.

Experienced flower growers, based on the experience of past years, made the appropriate conclusions, which will help determine the choice of the variety and the approximate sowing date:

  • small-flowered ampelous (sowing seeds for seedlings - January, February; planting in the ground - May);

  • cascading (sowing seeds for seedlings - February, March; in the ground - May, June);

  • large-flowered (sowing seeds for seedlings - March, April; in the ground - June);

  • bush and dwarf (sowing seeds for seedlings - March, April; in the ground - June).

Remember that in each case, planting has its own individual approach.

And to perforate the container from below or not, so that the water does not stagnate?

Lilia, I don’t make any drainage holes. I fill a suitable container with soil in half with coconut substrate. I water well, but not too much. Excess water, drain or add soil. I spray with a solution of phytosporin (10 drops / 1 liter of water). The soil level from the edge of the container should be 5-7 cm lower.
