Suburban life absorbs, but it is unlikely that the owners of the sites do not like it. To create beauty around your own house with your own hands is work, pleasure, and a wonderful experience. There are such buildings in the country, the functionality of which is not limited to one thing. They are simultaneously created for relaxation and to optimize the growth of a summer cottage. An example of this can be a pergola - an excellent device for growing grapes and just a very beautiful suburban structure.

Description and requirements

A pergola is called a grape arbor, consisting of several elements connected by a special lattice roof. Such a structure is usually installed on the territory of country houses. The appearance of the structure is original and attractive. It not only creates a pleasant partial shade, but can also be used as a zone zoner.

The vine branches are tied vertically to form a green wall. Leaves and vines are exposed to light, and these are excellent conditions for a good harvest. The bunches manage to ripen at the same time, the berries are large and juicy. Constant ventilation is organized for the grapes, and the risk of attack by pathogenic organisms on the plant is almost excluded. There is no need to take care of the grapes on the pergola in a special way.

There is another nice design feature - its size. The width and height of the grape arbor are such that the plant is placed on it very ergonomically.

If the summer cottage is small, the pergola will definitely save space for the growth and development of grapes.

Species overview

The pergola becomes part of the suburban area, and this part should be organic. Usually it is installed near the house.

By form

It can be a structure with kinks, arched and semi-arched model, round, wall-mounted, single-row and fan-shaped. There are other, perhaps more familiar names for pergola species.

Grape designs are as follows.

  • In the form of an awning. The green awning is considered the most popular and widespread model. Usually, such structures are built next to the house. They can be used as canopies for a dining group.
  • In the form of a garden screen. Basically, these buildings are used as zoners of the territory. Plants that represent hedges can be very different, including grapes. Often, garden screens mask some unsightly areas of the site.
  • In the form of a visor. They are made in the southern regions. The main task of such options is to protect from the scorching sun. The structure is more architectural and is set up on the territory as a place for recreation.
  • In the form of an arch or a tunnel. This pergola looks fascinating, fabulous. It is difficult to build something like this on a small plot, but if the area of the territory allows it, you will get a fabulous place with romantic views.

But even a pergola in the form of a modest small gazebo uniquely decorates the site.

By material

The most popular option is considered to be a wooden structure. The tree lends itself well to processing and is a relatively budget option. You can take wood from pine, oak, spruce, aspen. The wooden structure will "make friends" on the site with vegetation, especially with grape branches - a pergola made of wood and growing grapes seem to be made for each other. This grape gazebo will fit into any country style.

But due to the regularity of watering the grapes, the wooden structure can deteriorate. Therefore, the tree is pre-treated with special compounds and antiseptics. First, the material must be thoroughly dried in the sun, then treated with an antiseptic.

The tree will be protected from precipitation by painting and varnishing or a special oil for impregnating outdoor wooden buildings.

A metal pergola is also not a rare option. Making such a canopy for a vineyard can be more expensive though. It is almost impossible for a person without experience in welding and similar work to build a pergola from a profile pipe with your own hands, and even more so forged.

However, metal is more durable and easier to care for. Sometimes the metal becomes part of a wooden building, that is, a combined product is obtained, which in many cases is really an option. And in order to protect the structure from rust, all metal parts are first treated with a primer, and then covered with paint.

The most preferred color is green, merging favorably with grape leaves. White color is also quite in demand, because it makes the design more delicate and airy.

A plastic pergola is another option that, while not the most popular, is worth considering. The material is cheap and this is its main advantage. It is malleable, you can create a structure of absolutely any shape from it. True, there can be no question of making a pergola on its own: plastic structures are purchased ready-made in specialized stores.

The most difficult (in the context of construction) material is stone. Still, stone pergolas will be the most durable. They will stand in the country for many decades, therefore the efforts and costs are quite understandable. And this design looks very solid. Individual columns will become full-fledged design elements, but at the same time they will be a reliable support for the vine.

How to create it yourself?

The type of structure is capital, that is, a permanent structure. For the winter, the building is not dismantled, it is also not transferred from place to place. If someone does so, then there is a very risk of injury to the vine. Therefore, even before the drawings and sketches, you need to understand where the pergola will stand. The place for the building must be chosen so that there are no problems with the illumination of the site. A free approach to the vineyard is envisaged, because the future harvest requires care. And in the general landscape, the building should also look nice, organically to its surroundings.

The base of the grape arbor should be flat. And this does not depend on what material the structure will be made of. It is necessary to make all measurements, on the basis of which the calculation of materials is made.

You don't have to do it manually. It is necessary to find online settlement services in a search engine, choose the most convenient and understandable one and trust high technologies.

You shouldn't even consider ideas with a low and cramped grape arbor. In pursuit of saving space, you can get an unsuccessful structure that will look ridiculous, and most importantly, it will not really help in growing grapes. And if the structure is very large, it is unlikely to be completely overgrown with vine branches. If the territory of the site is large, a low arch will get lost on it, and a large pergola will look too awkward on a plot of modest footage.

How to make the simplest pergola - step by step instructions.

  1. It is necessary to prepare materials / tools: a shovel, a screwdriver, self-tapping screws, twine, a hand tool for digging holes, 4 wooden posts according to the calculated thickness, thin bars for the construction of crossbars at the top and sides.
  2. With a shovel and any convenient hand digging tool, you need to make 4 recesses in the ground. They reach a depth of 0.5 m and 30 cm in diameter.
  3. Now you can fix the vertical posts, keeping the equidistant distance between them.To do this, you must initially take the required amount of land from the site. The racks are alternately lowered into the grooves made. The supports are fixed vertically, covered with earth, raised from the dug hole and additionally collected on the site. The ground at the supports must be properly tamped with your feet.
  4. At the top, on the self-tapping screws, 2 horizontal longitudinal bars should be fixed. The attachment points are tied with twine.
  5. Then you can make the "roof" of the grape gazebo from the crossbeams, they are also fixed on screws and twine.
  6. The fixation of the side beams completes the work, along which the weaving of the vine will be as active as possible.

Making an arched pergola with your own hands.

  1. For construction, you need to take: bars 2 m in height, 4 or 6 pieces, bars for the top of the structure (can be straight, can be curved), edged board of coniferous trees 2 cm thick, any suitable waterproofing, bitumen and crushed stone, concrete mortar, fasteners, screwdriver and shovel, drill and building level.
  2. First you need to prepare 2-meter pillars. The lower pillar part should be treated with bitumen, and then tightly wrapped with waterproofing.
  3. The pillars are installed vertically in pits that have been previously dug to a depth of at least half a meter. In the case of loose soil, pits can be made deeper, up to 2 m.
  4. A little rubble must be poured into the recess, then the pillars must be poured with a concrete mixture.
  5. On top of the posts, longitudinal beams are fixed, after which transverse beams made of edged boards are attached.

It must be remembered that grapes love light and warmth, so the place for the pergola is selected in accordance with the needs of the culture. If the pergola is sent to the shade or partial shade, the leaves will not turn rich green.

Usually construction takes place directly next to the garden house or veranda, next to a pond or a stationary pool, near trees and a garden fence.

Beautiful examples

Finally, the following examples will reinforce the belief in the independent construction of a pergola. Below are 12 designs for beautifully growing grapes on the site.
