Sweet pepper Vesta is a hybrid that ripens one of the first. Large fruits with excellent taste make it attractive for use in salads and canning, cooking. The hybrid is successfully grown in open ground and greenhouses, it does not create difficulties even for amateur vegetable growers.
Breeding history
Pepper Vesta was bred by the breeder V.I.Blokin-Mechtalin. The hybrid was approved for use in 2019. It was registered by the well-known Moscow agrofirm "Partner".
Description of the variety
Vesta forms bushes with a height of about 0.8 m, does not need growth restriction. The hybrid is distinguished by a well-developed surface-type root system, in diameter it reaches 25 cm or more. Plants are characterized by intense branching. They bloom in May, the buds do not bloom at the same time, are formed throughout the growing season, but this process slows down somewhat when the peppers ripen.
Fruiting is abundant, up to 20 ovaries are formed on the bush at the same time. Flowering occurs according to the female pattern; the plants do not need pollination.
Characteristics of the appearance of plants and fruits
The bushes are medium-sized, powerful, semi-spreading, with drooping tops of medium density and hanging fruits. The leaves can be quite large, they are located singly, in the open field they reach a length of 100 mm, in a greenhouse 150 mm. The surface of their plates is slightly wrinkled, colored green. The cuttings are elongated.
Fruits are elongated, medium-sized, about 7 × 14 cm. Their shape is cone-shaped, in technical ripeness the skin is painted in a greenish-white tone, when fully ripe it turns red. The average weight of fruits is 140-160 g. Inside there are 3-4 seed chambers, the surface of the skin is smooth, with a glossy sheen, finely ribbed.
Purpose and taste
Pepper Vesta has a universal purpose. Well suited for freezing, all types of processing, fresh taste good. The fruits are highly marketable. The consistency of their pulp is dense. The taste is good, pleasant, without bitterness, moderately sweet, with a characteristic light aroma.
Peppers are suitable for long-term storage, long-distance transportation. The dense skin allows them to be used for stuffing.
Ripening terms
The variety is early, from the moment of emergence to fruiting, 65-70 days pass.
Yield
Average collection rates reach 12.7 kg / m2.
Growing regions
Vesta is an unpretentious hybrid that is successfully grown throughout Russia. It is cultivated in the Far East and North-West, in the central and middle zone of the Russian Federation, in the Chernozem regions, in the Urals and in Siberia. Peppers have time to fully ripen even in cold regions.
Landing scheme
The desired planting density is 4-5 bushes per 1 m2. The optimal layout is 40 × 40 cm.
To get a large and tasty harvest of pepper, you need to take care of the seedlings in advance. When growing pepper seedlings, you need to correctly determine the sowing time, pre-sowing seed treatment, prepare the necessary container and soil.
Growing and care
Cultivation is carried out within the framework of a one-year cycle, exclusively by seedlings. In cold regions, only greenhouse planting is used. Sowing for seedlings is performed in March, peppers are transferred to open ground in May. Plants are tied up, placing individual supports next to them.
The Vesta hybrid is sensitive to intense overheating, drying out of the soil. Pepper bushes need regular watering according to the schedule, with a break of 3-7 days. With each moistening, it is necessary to achieve soaking of the soil to a depth of 15 cm. Water is taken warm, settled, cold can lead to decay of the roots. Plants respond well to peat mulching.
Top dressing is another important component of the successful cultivation of this pepper. Vesta requires fertilization every 2 weeks from the moment of transplanting into the ground. Before flowering, watering with vermicompost and a solution of cow dung, poultry droppings is useful. From the moment of budding, they switch to superphosphate.
The formation of a bush consists in pinching the shoots to a fork. Each pepper is led into 2 trunks, to stimulate branching, the first bud is removed.
To harvest a tasty and rich harvest of pepper, you need to comply with all the conditions of agricultural technology, and proper care begins with planting plants. Before planting pepper in open ground, it should be prepared. It is also important to take care of the seedlings and planting space in advance.
Soil requirements
This hybrid of pepper grows well in beds after green manure, melons and legumes. The soil itself is preferable fertile, good moisture and air permeability to the roots. It will be useful to supplement loam and sandy loam with humus, potassium sulfate, superphosphate.
For good growth of pepper bushes and active fruiting, you need to regularly apply mineral and organic fertilizing to the soil. It is necessary not only to choose the right formulations, but also to use them at the right stage in the development of culture. The frequency of top dressing is always individual. It depends directly on the composition of the land on your site. The poorer the soil composition, the more often you will need to feed the pepper.
Required climatic conditions
The hybrid tolerates a short-term cold snap, but is generally thermophilic. For planting, it is recommended to choose sunny areas, the use of semi-shaded beds is allowed.
Disease and pest resistance
The hybrid is genetically resistant to TMV (races 0-2). It is practically not affected by black bacterial spot, it is tolerant to ascochitosis and powdery mildew.Bushes during the active growing season are very attractive to aphids. It is necessary to fight with it during the entire growing period. At the fruiting stage, the garden bed can be inhabited by slugs, which are especially active in the evening and night hours.
Pepper is one of the most common vegetables in home gardens. This culture is quite stable and unpretentious. However, under certain conditions, this plant can suffer from infections and harmful insects. Before treating peppers for diseases or pests, you need to find out the cause of the problem, otherwise the treatment may be ineffective.
Review overview
Despite the recent appearance of West pepper on the market, summer residents managed to appreciate this hybrid at its true worth. It really ripens faster than most competing varieties, produces one-dimensional fruits with excellent taste, well-kept in shape. According to the reviews of amateur vegetable growers, the plants are intensively tied, without stopping this process until the very frost. The emergence of new peppers is not prevented by occasional watering and short-term drops in temperatures.
The opinions of summer residents about this pepper are very high. It is indicated that it retains its aroma when preserved, stuffed, the fleshy pulp allows you to diversify the taste of salads. In the greenhouse, fewer fruits are formed, but they are obtained in record sizes. For whole-fruit canning, it is better to practice planting in the open field.
This hybrid has few downsides. Both in the greenhouse and in the open field, it is quite actively affected by pests, you have to use insecticides for protection. It will not work to get the second generation from the harvested hybrid seeds. This does not suit all summer residents who prefer to save their favorite peppers for the next season.
