Ozonizers: what are they, what are they and how to use them?
Today, in everyday life and in production, a huge number of devices and substances are used, with the help of which it is possible to purify not only air, but also water, things, products, etc. Among this list of devices, it is worth highlighting ozonizers, which are widely used in many areas of human life. ...
What is it and what is it for?
The device, the main function of which is the generation of ozone, is called the ozonizer. Modern devices of this line today are classified into 4 main groups:
- medical equipment - used for disinfection of air, instruments and ozone therapy;
- industrial devices - they are necessary for the processing of food and premises;
- household ozonizers - can be used to work with water or air;
- automobile models - used for the disinfection of vehicles, since they neutralize the harmful products of the engine.
Devices from the latter two categories are smaller and less powerful than medical and industrial ozone generators. They are also designed to handle small areas. There are variations of disinfecting devices combined with ionizers or humidifiers.
However, the main task for all devices, regardless of their scope and size, is the destruction of bacteria and viruses. As practice shows, in operation, ozonizers demonstrate an efficiency that is 1.5 times higher than that of the widely used chlorine. The device is capable of fighting fungus, mold, as well as small but dangerous microorganisms such as dust mites.
Besides that the ozonizer allows you to destroy the main dangerous bacteria, as well as the culprits of allergies and other diseases, it is often used to eliminate all sorts of unpleasant odors that can appear not only in rooms, but also come from things. After processing air or water, products and objects, no decomposition products remain on them, which are no less a threat in light of their toxicity.
However, the efficiency of the device directly depends on the deliberate use, adherence to the operating instructions, otherwise ozone can pose a great danger to humans.
Principle of operation
The operation of the device is compared to such a natural phenomenon as a thunderstorm. This analogy is explained by the fact that the active state of the ozonizer absorbs oxygen from the atmosphere, giving it a powerful electrical charge. Due to this effect, the oxygen formula undergoes changes, releasing ozone.
After that, a household, automobile or other device takes it out into the air in the room or into the aquatic environment with which it interacts at that time. At the same time, the gas reacts with harmful molecules in one form or another, completely destroying their structure.
The functioning of the ozonizer involves the passage of the parting of the following stages.
- First, any device is connected to an electricity source. Then a fan starts functioning in the device, due to which air is taken from the room. Ozone is formed.
- Then the actions of the ozonator will be directed for the release of gas into air or water.
- Depending on the initial settings after a specified period of time, the device turns off without assistance.
Benefit and harm
Such a functional device, which has a wide range of applications at home, as well as in industry and medicine, has its own positive and negative features. The advantages of the ozonizer include the following characteristics.
- Fight harmful bacteria and microorganismswhich are contained not only in air but also in water. The device does not leave behind toxic inclusions in the disinfected environment.
- Unlike chlorine or quartz lamps ozone is capable of eliminating unpleasant odors, including corrosive odors such as tobacco smoke, rotten or mildew odors, etc.
- In minimal concentration the gas has a beneficial effect on the human body. That is why today there is a separate direction in folk medicine called ozone therapy. The gas is able to act as an antiseptic, as well as a substance that has a positive effect on metabolism. Ozone can also be used as a pain reliever.
- Among the variety available small-sized devices for the home, portable devices, models that can operate at high humidity are presented, which will become relevant in some industrial sectors.
- The device is allowed to be used with clothing, also household ozonizers can be used for food processing.
However, such devices have some negative characteristics, in light of which the use of the unit is allowed only on condition of strict adherence to safety measures. The disadvantages of disinfecting devices include such characteristics.
- The ozonizer is not able to cope with the purification of air from pollen. Therefore, in some cases, its effectiveness will be extremely low.
- The units should be used with extreme caution, since the scheme of interaction of a gas in high concentration with some chemical substances can cause the formation of toxic compounds in the air that are dangerous to humans.
- The action of air in which there is too much gas, will adversely affect the respiratory tract and lungs of people. In particular, this concerns an increase in the susceptibility of the lungs to various infectious agents.
- Ozonizers can cause serious harm to plants, located in apartments or other premises. This applies to the development of a disease such as chlorosis in cultures.
- Any, even the most powerful professional ozonizers not capable of destroying carbon monoxide or formaldehyde molecules.
Description of species
There is another classification of ozonizers, according to which such devices are divided into two categories.
For air
The main front of such devices is the air inside the premises, regardless of their purpose. Ozonizers in this category are subdivided according to their power, due to which they will be able to interact with harmful dust molecules, viruses, odors, etc.
For water
The principle of operation of devices used for water will be similar to the first option. Unlike chlorine, a fairly common disinfectant, after using gas, no sediment remains in the liquid. In addition to fighting bacteria and pollution, ozone, by saturating water with oxygen, has a beneficial effect on its taste characteristics; as a result, the liquid tastes like spring water.
In addition to purifying the liquid itself, an ozonizer immersed in it is capable of cleaning vegetables, fruits or other food immersed in a liquid with a working device.
Manufacturers and models
Among the products of domestic and foreign manufacturers, it is worth highlighting the models that are in the greatest demand.
Omron "Ozone Lux Plus"
An affordable device that belongs to the universal category of units, since it can perform its tasks when immersed in water or in air. The device operates at a frequency of 50 Hertz, due to which it emits at least 400 mg of gas per hour. The device is additionally equipped with a timer; the weight of the device is about 1 kilogram.
"Atmos life"
Household unit made in Russia, combining the functions of an ionizer and an ozonizer. Designed for air purification, capable of destroying fine dust.
"Super-plus-bio"
Ionizer-ozonizer designed for home use. Effective against dirt and unpleasant odors.
"Storm"
The Russian representative of a series of anionic household ozonizers, which have a universal purpose, in light of which they are used for water and air. The device stands out for its ease of operation and compact size.
In addition to the above devices, products from China are also on sale, which stand out for their efficiency and affordable cost.
Among domestic units for disinfection, it is also worth noting the products of the Moscow Ozonators brand, which are in well-deserved demand among buyers.
How to choose?
To make sure that the device will be completely safe for humans, before buying an ozonizer, you should carefully study the characteristics of the model you like, compare the recommended parameters with the dimensions of the room in which it will be used in the future.
Without fail it is worth making sure that there are quality certificates that must be attached to each device sold. The device must meet the requirements of hygienic safety and be certified in Russia, which will be indicated by the corresponding mark in the technical passport.
As for the main parameters of the unit, gas production indicators deserve special attention. There are certain norms for premises:
- in rooms with an area of up to 15 square meters, an unit should be used whose capacity does not exceed 8 μg / m3;
- if the treated area is about 30-50 square meters, then the appropriate ozonator capacity should be at the level of 10-12 μg / m3;
- industrial disinfectants for closed areas over 50 square meters should have an output of 20 μg / m3.
It is better to refuse to purchase devices that do not have such application decryptions in their technical documentation.
The presence of additional functions is not a prerequisite for ozonizers. However, in some cases, the rational choice will be to purchase universal devices, where the tasks of purification will be combined with the functions of humidifying the air.
Instructions for use
In the technical passport for each model of cleaning devices, the manufacturer indicates the operating conditions of the unit. In particular, this applies to the operating time of the device required for the complete purification of air or water.
The operating time of the device is determined based on the scope of application and the area of the room:
- to disinfect clothes or water, it will be enough to turn on the ozonizer for 5 minutes;
- to clean an apartment, house or industrial premises after repair, the unit will need to be turned on for 25-30 minutes;
- 10 minutes will be enough for scheduled air purification in a residential area;
- an ozonizer in a quarter of an hour is able to destroy dust mites, as well as neutralize unpleasant odors;
- half an hour's work will be required to combat persistent unpleasant odors, as well as to disinfect a room after a sick person has been in it.
Also, the instructions usually indicate the moments at which the inclusion of the device in the network is prohibited. So, it is impossible to connect the ozonizer to the power supply in the presence of explosive gases or other similar compounds in the air, extremely high air humidity, which can provoke a short circuit. In addition, the operation of the ozonizer is prohibited in rooms where conductive dust is present in the air.
The device should be placed indoors and connected to the power supply in one stationary place, out of the reach of children.
During the operation of the device, all plants should be temporarily removed from the room, and also left for the period while cleaning is carried out.
Review overview
In official medicine, ozonizers have not yet received recognition. However, according to some doctors, devices of this kind are capable of providing a disinfecting effect when interacting with air, water, medical instruments, things and other objects. In comparison with the extremely negative, and sometimes even dangerous, effects of certain disinfecting substances, the use of gas in accordance with the rules of operation will not bring harm to a person.
In most cases after air treatment with ozone, there was a speedy recovery of people with problems with the respiratory system.
The ozonizer cannot destroy pesticides found in many vegetables and fruits, but it can exclude the presence of no less dangerous microorganisms or bacteria.
See below for the benefits and dangers of the ozonizer.
