A real colonel - cucumbers with this name will be appreciated by lovers of medium-sized hybrid varieties. The culture is not particularly demanding in care and cultivation, while it has many excellent qualities, such as high yields, resistance to diseases, and also excellent taste.
Breeding history
The cucumber culture was obtained in Russia. The development of the hybrid was carried out by leading specialists from the well-known domestic breeding company "Manul", which has been specializing in the production of planting material for more than 20 years. These are such scientists as Borisov A.V., Krylov O.N., Nasrullaev N.M. The variety was included in Rosreestr in 2004.
Description of the variety
A true colonel is a parthenocarpic hybrid that is distinguished by a female or more female type of flowering. It is characterized by an early ripening period. This cucumber crop is recommended by originators for cultivation under shelters, film or glass, in tunnels. Plants can also be grown in the open air, while seedlings or seeds can be planted in the ground.
A distinctive feature of the domestic hybrid is long-term fruiting, the activity of which does not decrease even before frost. If there is a desire and opportunity (for example, the presence of a suitable container), plants can be perfectly grown on the balcony. The variety is also characterized by amicable ripening of zelents.
Characteristics of the appearance of plants and zelents
The bush of the True Colonel is of an indeterminate type of growth, vigorous, branching below average or medium.
The fruits of the hybrid are slightly curved cylindrical greens, on which there are white thorns, as well as dense pubescence. The color of the thin skin with tubercles is beautiful, bright green. In length, cucumbers reach 12-15 cm, they are 3.8-4.4 cm in diameter, the weight of each fruit is on average 120 grams.
Purpose and taste of fruits
Tasters note high taste and salting characteristics, juicy and crunchy flesh. Cucumbers are delicious when eaten fresh, and are also suitable for pickling. At the same time, the sugar flavor, without bitterness, is preserved in marinades and pickles.
Maturation
The culture is early ripening, which means that 40-42 days pass from germination to harvest.
Yield
As for the yield, the Real Colonel's average indicators are in the range of 10-13 kg / m2.
Landing scheme
The originators recommend the following planting density:
- in greenhouses - 2.5 plants per 1 m2;
- outdoors - 3-4.5 plants per m2.
Growing and caring
Cucumbers Real Colonel, like many other cucumber crops, is grown using one of two main methods: seedling or non-seedling. Each of these options has its own characteristics of the procedure.
Specifically, the timing of planting the cucumbers of the hybrid in question will depend primarily on the method by which it is planned to grow the crop, namely by seedlings or by sowing seed material into the ground.
So, with the seedless method, the ideal timing is when the likelihood of recurrent frosts is completely excluded. As a rule, this is observed in early May. But for seedlings, cucumbers of this variety are sown traditionally: late February - early March.
The grown seedlings are transferred to a permanent place after several true leaves appear on the seedlings, and this will happen 20-25 days after sowing the seeds. At the same time, the air temperature should warm up and be high enough, at least +15 degrees.
To transplant seeds or seedlings to the site, it is necessary to prepare a well-lit place for this. Insufficient lighting will prevent the cucumbers from growing to the required size. However, it is important that the sunlight is slightly diffused. This can be achieved by planting corn between the cucumber rows.
The distance between adjacent landings must be maintained at half a meter. A higher planting density will prevent the fruit from receiving the required amount of heat and light.
When choosing a place for planting cucumbers for a Real Colonel, it is important to take into account the proximity of the groundwater, since a very high level of humidity in this side of the site can lead not only to decay of the roots, but also to a deterioration in the taste of the fruits themselves.
In general, the process of placing planting material on open ground is not very different from the actions that are performed when planting cucumbers for seedlings. The only difference is that the depth of immersion of seeds in the ground outdoors should be greater, at about 2-3 cm.
If an early disembarkation is made, it will be better to stretch a film shelter over the beds. This is especially true if there are frequent cases of recurrent spring frosts in the region.
After the culture planting procedure, in the future, it will need competent and timely care, including regular watering, the formation of cucumber bushes, feeding, prevention of diseases and pest attacks.
In order to collect strong, tasty and beautiful cucumbers on your site, you need to make top dressing. Lack of nutrients can negatively affect the appearance of the plant and significantly reduce the yield. Fertilize cucumbers with organic fertilizers in combination with mineral fertilizers. With the right balance of these components and adherence to the fertilizing schedule, the cucumber yield will be maximum.
Disease and pest resistance
Hybrid This colonel is resistant to many cucumber ailments, such as olive spot, common cucumber mosaic virus. The culture is tolerant to powdery mildew, root rot.
Despite their popularity, cucumbers are often attacked by diseases and pests. From them, cucumber plantings often die before the start of fruiting. In order to prevent this from happening, it is necessary to try to prevent ailments or get rid of them at the very beginning, having studied in detail their causes of occurrence, signs and methods of treatment.
