Cucumber Emerald earrings is a self-pollinated hybrid used for making salads, canning and pickling, harvesting gherkins. It is suitable for outdoor cultivation and various types of shelters, including winter greenhouses. Differs in early maturity, the formation of ovaries according to the bouquet type, amicable return of fruits.
Breeding history
Cucumber Emerald earrings approved for use in 2011. A group of breeders under the leadership of S.F.Gavrish participated in the breeding. The application was submitted by the firms Scientific Research Institute of Vegetable Crop Breeding LLC and Gavrish LLC.
Description of the variety
Hybrid parthenocarpic, indeterminate, with female flowering. It does not need cross-pollination, but it is quite demanding in maintenance, in the open field it shows a lower yield. The number of flowers in a node is 2-3 units. By the type of fruiting, it belongs to the group of bundles, with the formation of 8-10 zelents in each bundle. On pickles, they are harvested for 2-3 days from the beginning of the formation of the ovary, for gherkins - for 4-5 days.
Characteristics of the appearance of plants and zelents
Bushes vigorous, medium branching. The leaves are green, not very large. Zelentsy are short, 9-11 cm in size with a diameter of 30-40 mm. The mass of each fruit of a cylindrical shape is 115-130 g. The surface of the skin is small-tuberous, pubescence is white, the color of the cucumber itself is dark green, with short stripes and mottling.
Purpose and taste of fruits
Fruits are universal, equally good in harvesting and fresh. The main purpose is canning. The pulp is crispy, aromatic, the taste is excellent, without the presence of bitterness.
Maturation
From germination to the beginning of fruiting, 42-47 days pass. In terms of ripening, the hybrid belongs to the early varieties of cucumbers. Fruiting is extended, long-lasting.
Yield
This cucumber hybrid is considered to be high yielding. The collection rates from 1 m2 on average vary from 13.1 to 14.6 kg.
Growing regions
The hybrid is adapted for cultivation in most regions of Russia. It successfully takes root in the Far East, the Urals and Siberia. It is grown in the Central Black Earth Region and in the Central, North-Western regions, in the Volga region.
Landing scheme
The optimal arrangement of cucumber bushes is built according to the 50x50 cm scheme. They begin to sow seedlings at the end of April. Plants are ready for transfer to open ground by the end of May or the beginning of June.
Growing and care
The best location for this hybrid is on the sunny side of the site. Sowing directly into the ground is carried out only in heated soil, with an increase in atmospheric temperatures up to +18 degrees.
The hybrid is demanding to care for, needs regular evening watering. Water is taken only warm, the frequency is regulated by weather conditions. During hot dry periods, watering is carried out daily. The rest of the time, at intervals of 2-3 days. The soil must be pre-loosened to saturate with oxygen.
The first feeding is carried out 2 weeks after the cucumbers are planted in the ground, then repeated until the end of the growing season at the same intervals. Watering with the "Zircon" complex is useful on the sheet. Under the root, cow dung diluted in a ratio of 1: 20 can be applied.
Tall bushes need a mandatory garter. Shoots are allowed on the supports with a vine. The tapestry is pulled at a height of 150-200 cm, as the height of the whip is tied up. As soon as the central shoot reaches the upper edge of the support, it is pinched.
Necessarily to preserve abundant fruiting in this hybrid and pinching. Extra shoots are removed from cucumber bushes, leaves are cut off at the bottom of the stem. Activities can be combined with watering. Without this, ovaries will appear only from 20-30% of flowers.
Soil requirements
Emerald catkins are a hybrid demanding on the composition and quality of the soil. It should pass moisture and air well, have a fertile composition.
In order to collect strong, tasty and beautiful cucumbers on your site, you need to make top dressing. Lack of nutrients can negatively affect the appearance of the plant and significantly reduce the yield. Fertilize cucumbers with organic fertilizers in combination with mineral fertilizers. With the right balance of these components and adherence to the fertilizing schedule, the cucumber yield will be maximum.
Required climatic conditions
This hybrid is suitable for a moderately humid and warm climate. In such places, plants can be planted without shelter. In colder climates with strong winds or frequent weather changes, it is recommended to cultivate cucumber bushes in a shelter, under a film or in a permanent greenhouse.
Disease and pest resistance
The hybrid is relatively resistant to root rot. It is rarely affected by the mosaic virus, powdery mildew or cladosporiosis. Practically does not get sick with brown spot, bacteriosis. When transferred to the ground, young plants must be protected from contact with insects. Ants in the beds damage the root system, and aphids eat leaves and flowers, interfering with normal fruiting.
Despite their popularity, cucumbers are often attacked by diseases and pests. From them, cucumber plantings often die before the start of fruiting. In order to prevent this from happening, it is necessary to try to prevent ailments or get rid of them at the very beginning, having studied in detail their causes of occurrence, signs and methods of treatment.
Review overview
The opinion of summer residents about this hybrid can be assessed as positive. Emerald earrings are considered a truly successful result of selection, they note its excellent taste and aroma, including at the stage of formation of pickles, the preservation of the crunch and density of the pulp after conservation. Among other advantages, there is no need for insect pollination, as many people prefer to plant cucumbers in greenhouses.
The appearance of the fruit also gets good marks. It is noted that the cucumbers are medium-sized, without pronounced thorns on the surface. Sweetness and juiciness are well felt in the taste. Other advantages of the hybrid include the absence of barren flowers in the beds and in greenhouses.
There are few negative reviews. Summer residents are not very happy with the germination of cucumbers, as well as the number of seeds in the package. In cold summer, the ripening period can increase to 60 days or more. When sowing in a greenhouse, the material can be damaged by pests. It is also noted that not all ovaries develop fully, some may stop their growth.
