Cucumber Garland is a popular variety for cultivation in greenhouses and greenhouses; it is grown both on the balconies of city apartments and in the open field. This is an early female flowering variety with excellent taste and a persistent pleasant aftertaste. Lovers of cucumbers note a persistent aroma, suitability for winter harvesting and ideal parameters for this purpose: compact fruits in pimples, but practically without hairs, reach a maximum length of 14 cm.Even on a windowsill in a room, more than 3 dozen fruits can be obtained from a plant.
Breeding history
Cucumber Garland is often confused with the Siberian Garland, but these are completely different varieties. Improvements and novelties have appeared in recent years in the world of cucumber aficionados. The advent of parthenocarpic varieties facilitated the difficult work of those who, due to climatic conditions or the lack of a large plot of land, are forced to cultivate vegetable crops in greenhouses.
The authors of the cucumber variety with a festive but figurative name are leaders in the production of high-quality seeds sold on the domestic market. Their specialization is the cultivation of seeds of the author's selection and species known in Russia. In this case, an excellent vegetable variety was grown in collaboration with the Research Institute of Indoor Vegetable Growing, located in Moscow and closely cooperating with similar organizations in Russia: in the Crimea, Siberia and in 65 other regions.
Description of the variety
The variety has a large list of advantages that can easily seduce a gardener who creates a small oasis on a balcony or loggia. Those who are engaged in growing fruits in a greenhouse already know the numerous advantages of a masterpiece of domestic selection:
- record time of spring ripening (fresh cucumbers will appear on the table as early as 42 days in indoor cultivation), in open ground they grow only 7-14 days later;
- many compact cucumbers at the same time (hence the name of the variety);
- taste, aroma and consistency of fruits for universal use;
- the ability to bear fruit in moderate shade (unpretentiousness of the plant to the degree of lighting);
- excellent immunity - a useful property of a hybrid that is resistant to common diseases and an average degree of immunity to mosaic and downy mildew;
- the market yield is close to 100% mark, the type of fruit setting is bouquet.
For more than a decade, the Garland, included in the State Register, has been in demand and popularity among all gardeners involved in the cultivation of green fruits in difficult conditions. In the descriptions of the variety, 2 disadvantages are indicated, one of them is the need for daily collection of crispy cucumbers of a small diameter. The second is to buy seeds, because this is a hybrid, and it is impossible to breed it on your own.
Characteristics of the appearance of the plant and zelents
Short fruits (up to a maximum of 14 cm) have the shape of a perfect cylinder and a diameter of up to 3.5 cm. Zelentsy has a dark green saturated hue, on which small light stripes can be seen.Pimpled cucumbers are only slightly covered with short hairs, in each leaf sinus a bouquet ovary of 3-5 flowers is certainly formed, in place of which, under favorable conditions, juicy fruits with a pleasant pronounced aroma appear.
The plant is obtained by crossing two varieties, from each of which are inherited:
- parthenocarp (the ability to give ovaries without external pollination);
- small heart-shaped leaves with jagged edges;
- strong bush growth and weak branching.
The absence of the need for male flowers (the female type of flowering is inherent in the hybrid) leads to an extremely rare appearance of barren flowers. With proper care, they are almost nonexistent. The hybrid does not transfer beneficial properties to the next generation, so you need to purchase seed from the originator annually.
Purpose and taste of fruits
Reviews of gardeners speak of the aesthetic medium-sized shape of cucumbers, excellent taste and universal use of the crop: from vitamin salads to salting and pickling. More than 12 kg per 1 square meter is a serious argument in favor of purchasing seed material and growing a unique product of domestic selection.
This can be easily verified by your own experience: in blanks and fresh, the Garland cucumber is fragrant, tasty, can be stored in the refrigerator at low temperatures for up to 4 weeks and does not lose its aroma and aftertaste.
Maturation
Weak branching of the bush saves the gardener from the need for permanent pinching, and 3-4 ovaries appear in the bosom during the growing season. On the 42nd day from the moment the first shoots appear, the gardener can collect the first fruits, and then this must be done daily. In the open field, depending on the region of residence and weather conditions, the harvest ripens 7-14 days later, but the yield, taste and ease of care are inherent in the Garland in any conditions.
If breeding is carried out in order to obtain commercial profit, and especially early greens are needed, they are planted with purchased seeds for seedlings, and at the stage of 3-4 leaves are transferred to the greenhouse. In cold regions, this is the end of May, or even the beginning of June.
Yield
The garland bears fruit for a long time, without taking breaks for rest, and this is an undoubted advantage of the variety. The daily collection is necessary for the emergence of new ovaries. Ignoring this recommendation, the owner of the plant himself inhibits the useful feature of the plant to immediately set a new fruit in the vacated territory. Each cucumber can weigh from 20 to 120 g. Different owners prefer small, large or medium-sized greens, so the collection figures from a bush are from 10 to 12.5 kg.
Growing and care
The seeds of the hybrids do not need soaking, disinfection and germination: the originator of the variety processes them according to all the rules and covers them with a special composition. When planting seedlings, different options are used: from peat pots to disposable cups and cassettes. It is recommended to buy soil intended for seedlings. Maintaining the necessary humidity (up to 75%) and airing, the seedlings are brought to maturity and planted in a greenhouse according to the scheme 30x70 cm.
A tall bush needs to be tied up; trellises are made for it. In the lower crowns of leaves, shoots are removed, but the ovaries are left: this is not difficult if the plant forms into one stem. From the moment of planting to flowering, watering is moderate, at the root, in the morning or in the evening every 3-5 days. From the moment the ovaries appear until the end of fruiting, you will have to water more often, weed from weeds and mulch the soil.
In order to collect strong, tasty and beautiful cucumbers on your site, you need to make top dressing. Lack of nutrients can negatively affect the appearance of the plant and significantly reduce the yield. Fertilize cucumbers with organic fertilizers in combination with mineral fertilizers. With the right balance of these components and adherence to the fertilizing schedule, the cucumber yield will be maximum.
Despite their popularity, cucumbers are often attacked by diseases and pests. From them, cucumber plantings often die before the start of fruiting. In order to prevent this from happening, it is necessary to try to prevent ailments or get rid of them at the very beginning, having studied in detail their causes of occurrence, signs and methods of treatment.
