Cucumber Bjorn is a new hybrid variety that immediately gained immense popularity among gardeners around the world. Its main advantages are disease resistance, unpretentiousness to environmental conditions and high productivity. It is about this type of cucumber that will be discussed in the article.
Description of the variety
The main advantage of Björn is his self-pollination, he does not need insects to carry out pollination. Due to this advantage, cucumbers of this variety can be grown under conditions where insects are not enough for full pollination, for example, in greenhouses.
Characteristics of the appearance of plants and zelents
Bjorn is a graceful plant covered with large green leaves, with powerful roots. Gradually, the cucumber grows into a small slender bush with a loose leaf cover. Due to the fact that Bjorn mainly has small shoots, it is much easier to care for him than for other varieties of cucumbers. As for the zelents, their size reaches 12 centimeters.
Purpose and taste of fruits
By the time the fruits are fully ripe, they will have a homogeneous and pleasant juicy taste without any bitterness, so they are most often consumed in their natural form. So, they are ideal for preparing salads and any other dishes, as well as for pickling, pickling and subsequent storage for a long time.
Maturation
Bjorn belongs to the early varieties of cucumbers, due to which the ripening period begins much earlier than other types of this plant. It is enough that 35 days have passed from the moment of planting before the harvesting phase begins. By itself, this period stretches to two months. The variety ripens best in a greenhouse, as well as in greenhouses. Under these conditions, cucumbers are grown in two turns.
Yield
As noted above, the variety is famous for being able to give a bountiful harvest in a short time. At the same time, the average yield is 13.4 kg / sq. m. On each bush, the fruits ripen at the same time, due to which they can be harvested at the same time. Most cucumbers grow directly on the main stem, allowing them to be picked from the same location. Each plant resembles a bouquet during flowering. So, each bush forms several ovaries, where future greens ripen. When overripe, cucumbers do not turn yellow and do not begin to barrel, but at the same time they become denser.
Growing and care
Bjorn is grown either outdoors or in greenhouses. The variety itself can be planted both through seedlings and directly into the ground. One of the main advantages of the variety is that there is no need to process the seeds before planting.
Planting in open ground should be carried out at a time when the frost comes to an end. It is advisable to wait until the temperature reaches +13 degrees. It is impossible to plant in cold ground, because in this case the seeds simply cannot sprout. The ideal option would be to plant them in the soil where cabbage or peas were previously grown. But you should avoid places where carrots, beans and zucchini used to be. Cucumbers can pick up similar diseases from them. And also you should not leave the plant in the same area of soil for more than 5 years.
If a seedling planting method was chosen, then the harvest will come out even more plentiful than with the previous method. This is due to the fact that in this case the cucumbers will ripen a couple of weeks earlier, and the fruiting stage itself will be significantly extended. If the seedlings are planned to be planted in a greenhouse, then this should happen in the first week of April. If the choice fell on open ground, then it is better to do it in May.
Caring for Bjorn cucumbers is not as difficult as for other varieties. It is enough to carry out regular and timely watering, loosen the soil, weed and fertilize. Bjorn, at the same time, does not need pinching, pinching shoots or forming stems.
At the same time, it is necessary to clear the plant from weeds in time. After watering or after rain, the soil must be loosened. This must be done carefully and slowly, since there is always a risk of harming the cucumbers. In the greenhouse for Björn, it is required to feed 5-6 times, while in the open field it is enough to do this 4-5 times. Top dressing must be carried out through a combination of mineral and organic fertilizers.
Before planting, you need to make sure that the soil is sufficiently fertile and loose, and that it has a neutral reaction. Before planting cucumbers, the soil must be thoroughly fertilized. To do this, you need to carefully dig it up and add a mixture of compost, peat and manure. It will not be superfluous to add superphosphate to all this. Finally, the ground is dusted with slaked lime or wood ash.
Sowing of cucumbers takes place through dry seeds, for which they are laid flat on the ground, after which they are planted to a depth of 3 centimeters so that it turns out from 5 to 7 bushes per square meter. The dry soil must first be watered, and it is advisable to sprinkle the seeds themselves with humus or soil with sawdust.
If you plan to plant seedlings, then in this case, small pots are prepared in advance, where a couple of seeds are planted on each pot, after which they need to be watered every day with warm water. As a rule, seedlings are shown after 4-5 days. Once the plants have their first leaves, they can be transplanted into the greenhouse. The cucumbers themselves need to be grown using the trellis method. The rows should be 160 cm apart.
It is also worth mentioning the need for regular watering. Since cucumbers really need moisture, they need to be watered often. Most of the water should go to them at the time when the fruits are formed. In this case, in no case should you water with a strong stream. The moisture itself should fall on the ground, not on the cucumbers. The water must be warm. Before flowering, cucumbers need to be watered from 6 to 8 days, and during fruiting, once every 4 days. Watering is best in the evening.
In order to collect strong, tasty and beautiful cucumbers on your site, you need to make top dressing. Lack of nutrients can negatively affect the appearance of the plant and significantly reduce the yield. Fertilize cucumbers with organic fertilizers in combination with mineral fertilizers. With the right balance of these components and adherence to the fertilizing schedule, the cucumber yield will be maximum.
Disease and pest resistance
The variety has good protection from both pests and many diseases from which other types of cucumbers suffer. At the same time, with poor care and unfavorable conditions, Bjorn can still fall prey to diseases such as bacteriosis and white rot.To cope with this situation, you need to cut off diseased leaves, and then spray the plant with medicinal preparations. But it would be best not to allow such situations at all, and pay sufficient attention to caring for the cucumbers.
Despite their popularity, cucumbers are often attacked by diseases and pests. From them, cucumber plantings often die before the start of fruiting. In order to prevent this from happening, it is necessary to try to prevent ailments or get rid of them at the very beginning, having studied in detail their causes of occurrence, signs and methods of treatment.
