Glass canopies: description and installation
Describing glass awnings and their installation is very important for any homeowner and just an ordinary tenant. There are various types of them - placed above the entrance and attached to the house. The roof of the canopy can be made of plexiglass and double-glazed windows, but even if only a glazed transparent canopy is being built in a private house, you still have to take into account a number of subtleties and nuances.
Advantages and disadvantages
A glass canopy seems like an unreliable solution to many people. There was a perception that polycarbonate, not to mention wood or metal, is much more stable and safe. You just need to figure it out properly. The widespread belief that a glazed canopy is expensive is not entirely true.... Yes, when buying, you will have to pay a fairly significant amount, in comparison with the price of visors made of polycarbonate or even corrugated board.
However, high-quality glass lasts a very long time. And right away it is worth refuting another common misconception - that the glazed type of construction is fragile and mechanically unstable.
In fact, fairly strong types of glass are used, including laminated and tempered samples.... It is very difficult to break them, and even if you try to do it on purpose, it is still unlikely that something will come out right away. And if the canopy breaks, the risk of injury is minimized.
Triplex almost always only cracks, not giving fragments. The likelihood that in peacetime he will be subjected to a destructive effect is negligible. And when hitting tempered glass, although fragments are formed, their edges are dull and cannot cause any serious injury. Another common myth is that glass is monotonous and cannot have all kinds of colors. Life has long refuted this statement.
Of course, the catalogs contain absolutely transparent blanks for canopies. But produced and colored, and decorated with patterns models. There is even options with inscriptions, selected according to the individual order. Modern glass canopies will perfectly fit into both modernist surroundings and high-tech style. They can decorate both a semi-antique dwelling and a simple private house without additional frills.
It is also sometimes said that the inability of glass to bend does not allow creating a canopy of complex shape. But this is just another delusion.
Any experienced manufacturer can easily make and shed, and gable design, and undulating, and even any complex shape - attractive samples of such products can be found in every catalog. In this case, the glass not subject to corrosion, it does not rot and retains its qualities for many decades. Surface cleaning is possible with plain water, and in more difficult cases - with compounds used to wash windows.
Tempered glass perfectly tolerate strong temperature fluctuations. They will not be damaged in any humidity, they are not afraid of ultraviolet radiation. Tinting film will help to hide from sunlight, and without unnecessary darkening. The high rigidity of modern products makes it possible to extinguish the noise of raindrops.
The only real one minusthus, it is a very large initial investment when purchasing a glass canopy. It is also worth considering that if the structure nevertheless breaks something, then it cannot be repaired - it will only be possible to completely replace it.
What kind of glass is used?
Widespread use of triplex... To obtain it, take several sheets of plain glass and connect it with a polymer film. A canopy can also be made from hardened material... It is heated almost to the point of melting and abruptly cooled down with a jerk. As a result, in terms of strength indicators, glass after hardening is not much inferior to structural steel.
In many cases, they form canopies made of transparent plexiglass. But it can also be made in a partially transparent version. Nobody even forbids making different parts of the canopy out of them.
The light transmittance of acrylic glass structures sometimes reaches 90%, moreover, it is relatively light.
Plexiglas is obtained by casting or by extrusion; it low heat permeability, resistant to rain and even wind... Also, canopies made of double-glazed windows of various sizes and shapes are widely used.
Varieties
More recently solutions on ropes (and other suspensions) seemed the height of risk. However, practice has shown that they are quite stable and reliable. Laboratory tested glass is strong and resistant enough for this application. The frame is available in many different options. Most often it is made from steel pipe or wood.
They look much more interesting structures based on forged parts... And one of the options implies a complete rejection of the frame of the usual look. In this case, discreet metal parts are used. The canopy itself appears to be floating in the air.
In a private house or a cottage built with abundant glazing, it would be quite appropriate to put a visor with lighting elements.
Add a sense of luxury helps introduction of stained glass inserts. A canopy with a roof over the entrance to a house or garage is a very attractive solution. You can stand under it confidently and calmly even in bad weather. Shed roof even novice wizards will be able to install. Nevertheless, it is better to entrust the work with glass to professionals.
Full moisture removal is possible with a tilt of at least 15 degrees. Therefore, flatter designs are impractical. For the veranda a canopy can be not only a means of protection, but also a visual decoration. In most cases, such structures are carried out in a stationary form. Above the pool most often they try to mount sliding structures; they will extend the swimming season and protect against the ingress of leaves and other litter.
Installation features
Before glazing the visor, you must carefully read it complete set. A set of spiders must be provided, that is, special brackets that allow you to attach the glass to the wall of the house. In finished kits, everything is usually already drilled. The hole is closed with a pin, on both sides of which the supporting parts of the spider are screwed on. The marking points are determined using a hydraulic or laser (which is preferable) level. Further, telescopic extensions are attached to the upper brackets, temporary supports are placed under the glass and the visor itself is fixed, setting its position with adjusting bolts.
A completely finished structure cannot be subjected to additional machining.... That is, in what form it came from the factory - in this way it must be fixed, following the recommendations of the manufacturers. Frame structures are assembled on the ground and only then lifted to the designated places. It should be noted that the manufacturer's instructions are often extremely general in nature and are not adapted for installation to different types of facades.... In this case, the supplier should be consulted.
