How and how to feed nasturtium?
For good flowering, as well as health and an attractive appearance, nasturtium must be periodically fed. There is nothing difficult in this process. The most important thing is to understand the timing of fertilization, as well as the types of possible fertilizing.
Timing
The timing of feeding depends on the purpose for which this or that fertilizer is introduced. In general, complex fertilizers must be applied at least, but not more often than once every 5 weeks.
At the very beginning of the growing season, nitrogen-containing top dressing should be applied. The first time the fertilizer is introduced about 2 weeks after the nasturtium has been planted in the open ground. The second feeding is allowed only three weeks after the first time. But in this case, the fertilizers will already be phosphorus-potassium.
The last time feeding is carried out in the fall, and in the winter time for this plant comes a dormant period, which continues until the onset of spring.
It is noteworthy that autumn feeding is relevant only if a species of nasturtium is cultivated, which belongs to the category of perennials.
Mineral mixtures
At the end of May, nasturtiums are planted in open ground. In this case, feeding is required only if the plant does not take root well in a new place.
Mineral mixtures become relevant only in June. They must be used in order to obtain an abundant and lush bloom of nasturtium. The most demanded elements in this case are phosphorus and potassium. You can feed it with almost any fertilizer that contains these microelements.
If everything was done correctly, the plant's response will be immediate. It will manifest itself:
- large inflorescences;
- juicy greens;
- bright shades of the colors themselves.
Besides, mineral mixtures can significantly extend the standard flowering period.
Organic feed
Initially, nasturtium is not particularly good for organic feed. But if it grows poorly, then at this time you can feed it with slurry.
Too strong a solution will be detrimental to these flowers. A suitable top dressing can be prepared according to the following recipe:
- Take one part manure and two parts water... Mix them well in one container. A plastic bucket works best for this purpose.
- To enhance the effect, you can add some wood ash.
- Insist 5 days, stirring occasionally.
Before watering, you need to make another solution. Take 1 part of the infusion and 15 parts of water. Mix well again and watering can be done. If nasturtium does not bloom well or grows during the growing season, then such feeding will serve as a good help to normalize the condition.
Folk remedies
Mineral fertilizers can be prepared independently on the basis of simple ash. The fact is that it contains about 30 trace elements necessary for the growth and development of nasturtium.
To prepare the solution, you will need the following components:
- water - 10 liters;
- ash - 300 g;
- potassium sulfate - 20 g.
All this needs to be mixed well. Fertilize with this solution in the morning or evening. It is better to introduce it into moist soil.
Ash can be applied dry both to flower beds and to pots with nasturtium. To do this, a small amount of it must be introduced during loosening, and then water the soil with warm water.
If all fertilizers are introduced in a timely manner, then the nasturtium will bloom for a long time in lush and bright flowers, and the greens will be of a rich shade.
