Litokol Starlike grout: advantages and disadvantages

Litokol Starlike epoxy grout is a popular product widely used for construction and renovation. This mixture has many positive characteristics, a rich palette of colors and shades. It is most suitable for sealing joints between tiles and glass plates, as well as for cladding with natural stone.

The material is an epoxy-based mixture consisting of two components, one of which is a combination of resins, modifying additives and filler in the form of different fractions of silicon, the second is a catalyst for hardening. The working and performance properties of the material make it possible to use it for external and internal cladding.

The main advantages of the product are:

• low abrasion;
• resistance to subzero temperatures (up to -20 degrees);
• operation of the trowel is possible at high temperatures (up to +100 degrees);
• immunity to mechanical stress, in particular to compression and bending;
• absence of defects (empty cavities and cracks) after polymerization;
• protection of the skin from ultraviolet rays;
• various colors, the ability to give a metallic effect (gold, bronze, silver);

• increased water resistance;
• resistance to acids, alkalis, fuels and lubricants, solvents.

Another positive quality of the mixture is the dirt-repellent property. If it gets splashed or spilled with liquids such as wine, coffee, tea, berry juices, the dirt does not eat into the surface and can be quickly washed off with water. However, since stains can appear on porous and easily absorbent surfaces, small areas are first putty before grouting. In such a situation, you cannot use colors that contrast with each other.

Unfortunately, the material has its drawbacks too. This applies to the following points:

• epoxy grout can form ugly stains on the plane of the tile;
• due to the increased elasticity, it is difficult to level the mixture after its application and this can be done only with a special sponge;
• incorrect actions can lead to an increase in the consumption of the mixture.

All these moments can be caused only by the inexperience of the master who carries out the work, so the independent use of the material is not always relevant. In addition, the grout is purchased with the remover, so the cost can be quite high. Only Starlike Color Crystal grout is devoid of such a common disadvantage as a rough surface, which occurs during the polymerization of Litokol Starlike mixtures, since it contains fine-grained components that provide smoothness after hardening, which cannot be said about other products.

The manufacturing company offers several types of material, each of which has its own distinctive qualities and characteristics.

• Starlike defender Is an antibacterial grout for ceramics. Outwardly, it resembles a thick paste. Designed for seams from 1 to 15 mm. It is an acid-resistant two-component composition for different types of tiles, with high UV resistance.This material has good adhesion, does not emit toxic fumes, ensures a uniform color of the cladding, and destroys virtually all bacterial microorganisms.

• Starlike C. 350 Crystal. The product is a colorless mixture with a "chameleon" effect, it is intended for transparent bases, glass compositions of decorative smalt. The advantage of grouting is the acceptance of the color of the laid tiles and a change in its own shade. It is used for joints 2 mm wide and no more than 3 mm thick. Looks especially impressive on illuminated surfaces.

• Litochrome Starlike - The mixture is two-component, used for external and internal coatings, ideal for bathrooms, swimming pools, vertical surfaces of kitchen countertops and cabinets. It is a functional and durable material for tile joints. Special additives in the product make it possible to achieve an interesting optical effect. The mixture is especially relevant for mosaic fragments and tiles; it is available in different colors (up to 103 shades).

• Starlike color crystal - a translucent grouting compound, created for sealing joints of all types of glass mosaics, is able to take on the required shade within the bounds of the general color. The color of the seams changes with lighting, which allows you to create original external effects. The mixture can be used not only for glass panels, but also for other decorative elements. Due to the fine fraction, it forms a smooth surface, has zero moisture absorption, can be used in cases where high hygiene of the coatings is required, joints with a size of 2 mm are allowed.

• Epoxystuk X90 - this product fills joints of 3-10 mm for indoor and outdoor installation of cladding, suitable for floors and walls. Ideal for any type of tile. The two-component composition contains epoxy resins, as well as granulometric quartz additives, which gives it high adhesion properties. The mixture hardens quickly, and excess paste can be easily washed off with plain water.

The area of ​​use of this product is quite large - pools, granite and marble window sills, kitchens, bathrooms, industrial and other premises where special strength and durability are required due to the aggressive effects of the environment.

At the moment, the manufacturer Litokol Starlike has released an innovative product - a grout based on an aqueous dispersion of polyurethane resins, which can also be used for glass mosaics with joint sizes of 1-6 mm. Such a composition is already ready for use, does not contain aggressive and corrosive components, when filling the joints with it, the mixture does not remain on the surfaces, thanks to the filler made of quartz sand.

Preparatory work is reduced to cleaning the joints from dust, mortar and glue residues. If the installation work was carried out recently, it is important to wait until the adhesive is completely dry. The filling gaps should be two thirds free.

If you decide to use the material yourself, then it is advisable to prepare the mixture and further work according to the instructions:

• the hardener is poured into the paste, while trying to clean the bottom and edges of the container with a spatula; for this, a steel tool is used;
• mix the solution with a construction mixer or drill;
• the resulting mixture must be applied within one hour;
• under the tile, the composition is applied with a spatula with teeth corresponding to the size and thickness of the tile, the fragments are laid with significant pressure;
• the tile gaps are filled with a rubber spatula and excess mortar is removed with it;
• if it is necessary to treat a large area, it is wiser to use an electric brush with a rubberized nozzle;
• cleaning of excess grout is carried out quickly, as long as the mixture remains elastic.

When working with Litokol Starlike grout, take into account the temperature, the optimal amplitude is from +12 to +30 degrees, you should not dilute the solution with a solvent or water. This product is not used if the surface may come into contact with oleic acids.

Reviews about this material are rather contradictory, however, in most cases they are positive: there is impeccable moisture insulation, strength and durability of the seams. These are truly high-quality products and, with skillful use, are ideal for a variety of spaces and finishes.
