How to choose glowing and neon wallpapers?
Glowing wallpapers are becoming more and more popular in interior design every day. They are preferred by those who love non-standard wall decoration and people who have children. If quite recently this segment was rare in the construction industry, today neon wallpapers can be found in the widest assortment in almost any hardware store.
However, the choice that people make when buying wallpaper for the bedroom, nursery or living room is not always balanced and deliberate. Glowing materials can become not only a highlight of the interior, but also an absurd decorative element, regularly “cutting the eye”.
To prevent this from happening, the choice of such canvases should be taken very seriously.
What it is?
Luminous wallpaper is the wallpaper on which a luminous paint is applied in the form of a pattern. The properties of this composition are that during the day, the pieces of finishing covered with it absorb sunlight, and at night they emit a very soft and unobtrusive glow. This is a great help for families with small children, because if a child is afraid to fall asleep in complete darkness, the option with glowing wallpaper will be a good compromise.
Neon materials in the construction market are tacitly divided into two categories:
- Common finishing materials with applied phosphor patterns. According to the manufacturers of such wallpaper, the paint does not contain phosphorus and is absolutely harmless to the health of others. As a rule, the color of the pictures emitted at night is green, blue and yellow-orange. Wallpapers from this category can be called relatively inexpensive.
It is believed that you can try to make them yourself at home. To do this, you will need a stencil with a pattern that you would like to see on your wall and phosphor paint.
- There is an even more expensive and absolutely harmless option for humans - finishing materials made using a special technology known only to the manufacturer... The only thing that can be said about the method of creating such wallpapers is that the glow effect is achieved by combining phosphor paint with fluorescent paint. Initially, the material is coated in the right places with fluorescent paint, and then sprinkled with a thin layer of phosphor powder.
The effect is very unusual; during the day, the wallpaper looks like a volumetric image, and at night a small and very soft glow is added to the pictures;
- Special LED coatings appeared in stores relatively recently, so few people today are well versed in this type of neon wallpaper. They look very creative and are suitable for futuristic interiors. However, they should immediately be abandoned by those who are looking for wall or ceiling covering in the bedroom, office or living room.
Whichever category of these finishing materials you choose, in any case, professionals advise using special Wood lamps (they are also called BLB lamps or black lamps). They do not give visible light, but when a beam from such a lamp hits the paint, the glow becomes brighter and more interesting.
As a rule, such sources are fixed along the perimeter of the image, but you can do it pointwise, in some special places to which you want to draw attention.
With spot lighting, you will give the image on the wallpaper some volume and depth.It is recommended to mount these lamps no closer than 1 m from the illuminated object. If the neon composition is placed on the ceiling, these details are located behind the ceiling plinth.
Types of glowing wallpaper
There are the following types of luminous canvases:
- Roll wallpaper is intended for zoning. It is extremely rare that they are used to decorate the entire room as a whole. As a rule, with the help of 1-2 rolls of such a covering, you can visually separate the sleeping area from the rest of the room. This is especially appropriate in a child's room, when one room is at the same time a place for games, and a workspace for doing homework, and a recreation area. If there is a need to more categorically separate one part of the room from another, you can stick a baguette around the neon trim.
- Genre wallpapers are a real work of art. They are no longer sold in rolls, but in the form of canvases, which, like a mosaic, are assembled either into a full-fledged picture with a certain plot, or into an abstract motive or ornament. It is on this option that it is better to opt for if, with the help of finishing materials, it is also supposed to fulfill the task of visually expanding the space. They are also quite often used to decorate the ceiling, because what can be more romantic than lying in bed at night and admiring the starry sky mysteriously twinkling in the dark.
- Panoramic wallpaper fits well, as a rule, in spacious interiors, and rooms with a small footage are unlikely to suit them. Here you can often find plot pictures, as well as natural abstractions, for example, the surface of the sea or cosmic depths. It should be noted that it is this type of luminous wallpaper that belongs to the premium segment in the building materials market, so their choice should be taken as carefully as possible.
In particular, keep in mind that panoramic fluorescent wallpapers give a much more intense light than rolled ones, so it is better not to glue them on the walls in the bedroom or nursery - people with increased sensitivity will be uncomfortable in such a room.
Specifications
It is believed that this is a durable and unpretentious finishing material. Such wallpapers do not require special care, lend themselves to light wet cleaning (they can be wiped calmly with a damp cloth or rag, but without detergents). In addition, they do not fade with age and do not deform. Having glued such wallpapers, you can not think about repeated repairs within 5 years.
The only thing to consider is that these wallpapers need natural sunlight. To fully "charge" the drawing needs about 10 hours, depending on the intensity of the sun's rays. Enough energy also for about this time.
It is also easy to glue such wallpapers. Most modern photoluminescent sheets are self-adhesive, and those that do not belong to them are very easily glued using the most common wallpaper glue.
The main thing is not to contact dubious suppliers and take goods only from trusted and reliable manufacturers. As a rule, non-woven wallpaper, covered with a luminous pattern, is taken as a basis, so you should not be afraid of problems with repairs - in this case, everything is done as usual.
Where is the best place to glue?
Of course, the choice of the room to be decorated depends solely on the one who is doing the renovation. But to create a harmonious interior, which will later only please the eye, and not cause discomfort, it is better to listen to the advice of designers.
The most successful locations for decorating with glowing wallpaper are:
- Bedroom. ZHere, the ceiling is most often pasted over with neon wallpaper, creating the illusion of a starry sky, or they highlight a small area at the head of the bed, or vice versa;
- Children's. Neon wallpapers seem to be created for children, because what could be more amazing than a room in which magic princesses or flowers of incredible beauty suddenly appear when the lights are turned off;
- The corridor. Very often, a fluorescent ceiling can become a special highlight of a room, which we rarely pay due attention to;
- Living room. With neon wallpaper, you can create an atmosphere that perfectly continues the leading line of the interior. An urban landscape is suitable for a futuristic living room, and an oriental-style room will be exquisitely complemented by monograms and ornaments softly glowing in the dark.
Which ones to choose?
Before choosing such canvases, one should ask the question, how quickly will you get tired of the chosen motive? Wouldn't a city or a bouquet of flowers shine in the dark for you and your guests?
The answer is simple: of course not, if you choose the right drawing:
- Psychologists assure, based on many years of research, that the human psyche reacts most calmly to images of natural motives. It is the stars, waves and birds that become boring to the human eye much more slowly, while, say, industrial landscapes after a couple of months begin to annoy a little. And it is certainly not recommended to glue wallpapers depicting human figures - in the dark, they can even look a little creepy.
- If you doubt how successful your choice is, you can always turn your attention to removable luminous panoramas. This mobile option leaves you the opportunity to change the decor and update the decoration of the room.
- We must not forget that neon wallpaper is not only a decorative element, but also a source of diffused light. Keep this in mind when choosing a shine color. Otherwise, it may come into dissonance with the general style of the room. For example, a living room designed in soft and warm colors, plunging into a bluish glow with the lights off, will cause strange sensations in a person.
- In addition, remember this rule - wallpaper with an intense fluorescent pattern, which occupies a large area of the canvas and attracts a lot of attention, is best glued to rooms with a minimum amount of furniture.
