One of the most dangerous pests that can live on the site and harm vegetables and fruits is the gastropod slug. Outwardly, it resembles a snail, but without a "house" -shell.

Currently, the number of slugs, probably due to climate warming, has increased several times. This pest must be fought, and this is an indisputable fact. How to do this, what methods to resort to - we will tell below. You will be pleasantly surprised - you can get rid of the slug with the help of ammonia.

Properties of ammonia

There are many different chemicals that, according to the manufacturer, allow you to get rid of slugs in the garden and in the greenhouse. But experienced gardeners still prefer to use folk remedies in the fight against slugs, including ammonia.

Salmon has the following properties and benefits in the fight against slugs.

  • Ammonia, which is its main component, has a very pungent odor. It is this smell that scares off the molluscs and makes them run away from the site.
  • Efficiency.
  • Harmlessness to humans.
  • Availability. You can buy it at any pharmacy.
  • Price. The cost of ammonia is several, or even tens of times lower than, for example, specially developed chemicals.
  • Economical consumption.
  • Multifunctionality. Using the substance, you can cope not only with gastropods, but also with other pests that are not averse to feasting on the harvest. Also, do not forget that ammonia can be used to bring a person to life.

There are practically no drawbacks to this method of struggle. The only thing you need to know is how to properly prepare the solution.

How to breed ammonia?

Ammonia is really one of the most effective ways to get rid of slugs. This method is practiced by experienced agronomists and gardeners who know the recipe and the correct dilution proportions of the product. This is necessary because a high concentration of ammonia can greatly harm plants and their root system.

There are two recipes for diluting ammonia:

  • 40 ml of 25% of the substance is poured into 10 liters of water - such a solution is used to fill cracks in the ground;
  • 100 ml of ammonia is diluted in 10 liters of water - a more concentrated solution is used with a large population of mollusks and for continuous spraying or spilling of the soil.

It is very important to adhere to proportions so as not to aggravate the situation and not be left without a crop at all.

Terms of use

We have already determined that using ammonia, or as it is also called "pharmacy ammonia", you can get rid of slugs both outdoors and in a greenhouse, forever. But in addition to the rules for diluting and preparing the solution, you also need to know how to use the agent.

There are several recommendations shared by experienced gardeners.

  • Prepare the solution according to the proportions.
  • Using a watering can, bucket, or any other container. In an area where there are traces of slug habitat, fill all the cracks in the soil with a solution. Wait a bit. After a while, the slugs will begin to crawl out of their shelter, since the smell of ammonia is very unpleasant for them.
  • The ammonia does not kill them, they just start crawling to safety. And at this moment, with the help of a broom and a scoop or a shovel, they need to be collected and removed far from the plants.
  • It is absolutely impossible to crush slugs and leave their remnants on the site. This will attract other pests.
  • You need to use ammonia no more than once a week.

It is very important during the procedure to ensure that the solution does not get on the plants themselves. The concentration of the solution is high enough, and if it gets on the leaves or stems of plants, it can harm them.

This method can be used exclusively in the summer, at a time when the plants are already in bloom or fruits appear on them. In autumn, after harvest, the method will not be effective. This is due to the peculiarity of the life of the mollusk. Slugs appear on the site only in the warm season, during the period of abundant watering of the plants.
