Mosaic types
Currently, there are many types of mosaics, which differ from each other in the material of manufacture, colors, performance characteristics. This variety makes it easier when deciding which option to choose for decorating a bathroom or living room, kitchen or hallway.
Metal
One of the new species that appeared not so long ago. The material from which such a mosaic is made is stainless steel. It is not very thick, but very durable. Its weight is small, but it is very difficult to damage it. Corrosion is not terrible for this material, so it can be used to clad walls in rooms with high humidity - in the kitchen and in the bathroom.
Another option is aluminum mosaic. This metal is softer, and therefore rounded surfaces can be easily decorated with such mosaics. This species is also not afraid of water.
Moroccan
The Moroccan style implies a large number of patterns - three-dimensional and flat. In this case, the mosaic occupies one of the main places. This style is easily combined with others, therefore it is popular.
The use of mosaics of different colors and textures creates a riot of colors. The main colors are often brown, terracotta, ocher. Against their background, fuchsia, yellow, orange, emerald, blue, turquoise look advantageous as additional shades. It is preferable to collect panels from small tiles. These can be both traditional Moroccan motives and other subjects.
Smaltovaya
One of the most expensive because it is based on natural glass. The color gamut is determined by bright and saturated colors. In good light, individual fragments seem to glow from the inside. Any interior wins when decorated with such material. Even small, accentuated surfaces will add a bright touch to the design of the room. Not all consumers can afford such a design due to the high cost of the material.
Glass
It is in demand due to the combination of low prices and a variety of colors. There are different types - transparent, silver, platinum, gold, matte. Different layers of foil are used to reproduce a variety of original shades.
Due to its strength, frost resistance and heat resistance, the mosaic is suitable for the decoration of any premises. A fireplace, countertop, floors, walls will also look beautiful thanks to this mosaic.
Mirrored
A kind of glass mosaic. Differs in its unique feature to reflect light and objects. This allows you to visually expand the space. This mosaic is considered to be more capricious compared to other types. It is fragile enough, you need to use detergents with care, there should be no cleaning powders. Constant dampness leads to clouding of such canvases, so the use of such cladding in the bathroom will be an unsuccessful decision. Conversely, the design of certain areas in the rooms will look interesting.
Stone
This mosaic has many variations, which allows you to decorate the premises in an exquisite style and refine the surrounding area. Wall cladding is carried out with both expensive materials and simple pebbles. Both look original, despite the significant difference in price.
You should pay attention to what kind of surface will be veneered - floor, walls or countertop. Each type of work has its own mosaic, which differs in its operational characteristics. For floors, for example, it is recommended to choose a more damage-resistant and durable option that can withstand heavy loads. For walls, it is advisable to use a lighter covering that will hold better.
Various types of stone can be used to compose the panel: marble, malachite, tuff, someone even uses brick. It all depends on the idea to be implemented.
The mosaic made of untreated stone, which is interesting for its natural shape, looks original. The styling process is very time consuming, but the result is worth it.
Elite types include onyx, lapis lazuli, jasper mosaics. Walls decorated with these stones look incredibly luxurious. With such a design, it is not difficult to feel like in a palace.
Onyx is considered one of the most beautiful stones used in interior decoration. Rich color palette, delightful patterns and glow effect make it a leader in this field. The color can be orange, gray, blue, green, red, pink, lilac, amber, beige, brown.
Amber looks no less beautiful. You can also collect beautiful panels from it. The color palette is varied - from milky to dark brown shades.
Coconut
Unusual material that belongs to natural species. In addition to its original decorative appearance, it is famous for its strength, durability, and, of course, environmental friendliness. Such a mosaic is resistant to damage, is not susceptible to moisture and fungus, therefore, in addition to interesting solutions in the design of rooms, you can use it to create an original design in the bathroom or in the kitchen.
The material is easily glued to the surface using ordinary parquet glue. The advantages of this type of material include the fact that it is easy to wash, it perfectly retains heat and absorbs noise. It is also resistant to burning.
Ceramic
In appearance, it resembles the familiar ceramic tiles. Differences can be in size and shape - square or rectangular. The mosaic can be made using various effects: glazed, with small cracks (craquelure), with bright splashes of different colors, with imitation of irregularities. Unglazed mosaic has a porous surface.
Ceramic mosaic is successfully used in the design of any premises, both for interior and exterior.
Wooden
An unusual and original solution. Such a mosaic will look harmonious when decorating a home in loft, hunting, techno styles.
Most often, mosaic is a mixture of wood of different species and shades. There are also very unusual shapes, for example, in the form of cross-sections of the trunk.
Rare options
These include a diamond mosaic. Rather, it is a kind of needlework, but it will undoubtedly decorate any interior and become its highlight. This is usually a kit that contains a pattern with an adhesive layer. Acrylic rhinestones are applied to this base with tweezers. This is a very painstaking work, but the end result is worth it, because such a picture will decorate any wall.
Among the rare species, the golden mosaic is noted. It is clear that the use of real gold would make it prohibitively expensive, although such mosaics were used to decorate palaces. Now the golden effect is achieved thanks to the use of gold foil in the production of tiles, but glass-based mosaics are made.
Pearl mosaic also belongs to elite materials. This natural material is distinguished by its fragility. It is contraindicated to lay it on the floor, but the walls decorated with it in bathrooms and swimming pools look very harmonious. Operational characteristics allow you to decorate these rooms with such a mosaic without any fear, because this material is not afraid of water, high temperature and high humidity.
Combination of materials
The mosaic is also unique and convenient in that it can be easily combined with other materials as you like, thereby highlighting certain areas in the room. There is an opportunity to be creative yourself and lay out certain compositions using various combinations.
You can combine metal and glass mosaics, you can add ceramic to them. Or use both ceramics and glass. It is quite permissible to combine ceramics and wood, and wood and coconut will look advantageous. In the masonry, individual elements and sections may well contain metal, gold, and mother-of-pearl.
There are a great many combination options, it all depends on what kind of interior you need to create and what ideas you would like to implement.
Laying methods
- The first stage of work must necessarily be the leveling of the walls with putty or through the use of drywall. If there are any distortions, they must be eliminated by preparing a mixture of cement and sand. This is followed by priming the surface - this procedure cannot be neglected either.
- Attach the mosaic to the surface using ordinary tile glue. Do not treat large areas with glue solution at once - it dries very quickly, which means that the adhesion to the surface will be insufficient. Therefore, the adhesive should be applied to small areas. The mixture is distributed evenly using a toothed tool. Then the mosaic sheet should be leaned against the wall and slightly pressed on it. At the last stage, you need to wipe the seams.
- If it is decided to cover the pool room with mosaics, you need to choose waterproof glue, the same applies to grouting. The mixture should be laid in the seams carefully, trying not to stain the mosaic. The seams are given two days to dry. Water can be poured into the pool no earlier than after three weeks.
As practice shows, a huge amount of the most diverse mosaics and the ability to combine one material with another provide many opportunities to decorate any room and make it unique.
