How to make a microphone from headphones?
If suddenly there is a need for a microphone to work with a PC or smartphone, but it was not at hand, then you can use headphones - both ordinary from a phone or computer, and other models, such as lavalier ones.
Normal
From ordinary headphones it is quite possible to mount a microphone for communication on the Internet or sound recording, but from such an improvised device, of course, one should not expect high-quality sounds that are not inferior to those obtained using a special - studio - technique. But as a temporary measure, this is permissible.
Both the microphone and the headphones have a membrane, whereby vocal vibrational vibrations are converted through an amplifier into electrical signals perceived by a computer. And then they are either recorded on the carrier, or immediately transmitted to the subscriber to whom they are sent. The recipient, in turn, uses headphones, in which the reverse process takes place: electrical signals are converted using the same membrane into sounds perceived by the human ear.
In other words, only the connector into which the headphone plug was connected determines their role - either they act as headphones, or - a microphone.
It should be clarified that for this method of connection, ordinary miniature headphones inserted into the auricles (earbuds), and rather bulky ones, are quite suitable.
Lapel
From an old telephone headset, you can build lapel microphone. This requires Carefully open the case with the built-in miniature microphone, unsolder the two wires connecting the device with the general electrical circuit of the headset, and then remove.
But this work can be started only if there is an unnecessary mini-jack plug with a cord at home. (the one used in regular headphones without a headset). In addition, there must be soldering iron, and also everything that is necessary for high-quality wire soldering. Otherwise, it is easier to buy a cheap recording device - you still have to go to the store or visit friends and neighbors in search of the necessary material.
If everything is there, then you can safely get to work. The goal is to solder the plug cord wires to the device removed from the box. There are usually three of these wires:
- in red isolation;
- in green isolation;
- without isolation.
Colored wires - channel (left, right), bare - grounding (sometimes there are two of them).
The work algorithm consists of seven points.
- First, you need to free the wires from the general protective sheath of the cord so that they stick out from it for a length of 30 mm.
- Prepare something for the case for the future buttonhole (either a thin tube for the size of the cord, or a spout from a ballpoint pen). Pass the cord through the opening of the tube-housing under the microphone, leaving the bare ends of the wires outside.
- The ends of the wires must be stripped of insulation and oxides, and then tinned (about 5 mm long).
- The ground wires are twisted with the red wire and soldered to any microphone pin.
- The green wire is soldered to the remaining contact of the device
- Now you need to stretch the cord wire to bring the microphone close to the body, and then glue them together with glue. This work needs to be done very carefully, without disturbing the connections and ensuring a decent look for the lavalier microphone.
- To protect the microphone from the extraneous effects of noise, you can make a foam cover for it.
It would be nice to come up with a device that will attach the lavalier microphone to, for example, to items of clothing (clothespin or safety pin).
What devices can you use?
Homemade microphones from headphones quite fit not only for communicating with friends in chats, messengers of various types, social networks, but also for recording... They can be used on stationary computers, laptops. Mobile devices (such as smartphones or tablets) have their own microphones, but sometimes it is more convenient to use a lavalier device to free your hands.
A computer
To use regular headphones as a microphone on a PC, you just need to insert the headphone plug into the jack provided for the microphone and speak calmly through them. Previously, the processes carried out through the membrane of headphones, similar in action to the membrane of a microphone, have been described.
True, after connecting the headphone plug to the microphone jack, go to the sound settings, find the connected device among the microphones in the "Recording" tab and make it the default working one.
To test the functionality of the headphones, temporarily performing the "duties" of the microphone, you can say something in them or just knock on the body.
At the same time, attention is drawn to the reaction of the sound level indicator, located opposite the designation of the selected device in the "Recording" tab in the PC sound settings. There should be more green stripes there.
Mobile devices
In mobile devices, it will be more convenient to use homemade lavalier microphone. For it to work, you need to connect it correctly. To do this, you need to download and install a sound recording utility suitable for a specific operating system of a smartphone or tablet (Android, iOS), with which you can adjust the sound sensitivity of a personally created microphone.
But since mobile devices usually have one combined-type jack (for connecting both external headphones and a microphone), then you will have to get an adapter or an adapter that separates the channels into two separate lines: for connecting a microphone and headphones. Now they connect headphones or a homemade lavalier microphone to the microphone jack of the adapter, and the latter to the audio interface of a mobile device or to a preamplifier (mixer) to match the sound with the capabilities of mobile technology.
If the tablet or mobile phone does not have an audio input at all, then the problem of connecting a lavalier microphone should be solved via the Bluetooth system... You will also need here special applications that provide sound recording via Bluetooth:
- for Android - Easy Voice Recorder;
- for iPad - Recorder Plus HD.
But in any case, it should be borne in mind that the quality of home-made devices is much inferior to the factory ones.
