Features of Brother MFP
Multifunctional devices can be very diverse. But it must be remembered that a lot depends not only on the formal inkjet or laser printing principle, the specific brand is also very important. It's time to deal with the specifics of the Brother MFP.
Peculiarities
The widespread adoption of Internet technologies does not reduce the amount of printing that has to be done too much. This is important for individuals and even more so for organizations. Brother MFPs offer a wide range of premium printing solutions with added functionality. Today this manufacturer uses high-yield cartridges. They are great savers of both money and time for users. Difficulties with the maintenance of equipment should also not arise.
The country of origin of Brother multifunctional devices is not one - they are produced by:
- in the PRC;
- in the USA;
- in Slovakia;
- in Vietnam;
- in the Philippines.
At the same time, the headquarters of the company is located in Japan. Brother machines use all major methods of printing images or text on paper. This company has been operating in our country since 2003.
It is curious that in the distant past, in the 1920s, it began its activity with the production of sewing machines.
The company also supplies consumables for its equipment.

Model overview
There are two large groups of devices, depending on the printing technology - inkjet and laser. Consider the most popular Brother MFP models from these categories.
Laser
A good example of a laser device is the model Brother DCP-1510R. She is positioned as an ideal assistant in a home office or small office. Low cost and compactness allow you to put the device in any room. Print speed is relatively fast - up to 20 pages per minute. The first page will be ready in 10 seconds.
It is noteworthy that the photographic drum and powder container are displayed separately from each other. Therefore, replacing the required elements is not difficult.
The MFP is supplemented with a 150-sheet paper tray. Toner cartridges are rated for 1,000 pages. The preparation time for work is relatively short. Each of the two lines of the liquid crystal display has 16 characters.
The largest size of processed sheets is A4. The built-in memory is 16 MB. Printing is carried out only in black and white. Provides a local connection via USB 2.0 (Hi-Speed). During copying, the resolution can reach 600x600 pixels per inch, and the copying speed can be up to 20 pages per minute.
The technical parameters are as follows:
- average current consumption 0.75 kWh per week;
- driver for Windows included;
- the ability to print on plain and recycled paper with a density of 65 to 105 g per 1 sq. m;
- the ability to scan to email.
A good laser device is also DCP-1623WR... This model is also equipped with a Wi-Fi module. Implemented the output of documents for printing from tablets and personal computers. Print speeds up to 20 pages per minute. Toner cartridge capacity is rated for 1,500 pages.
Other technical nuances:
- internal memory 32 MB;

A pleasant alternative could be DCP-L3550CDW... This MFP model is equipped with a 250-sheet tray. Print resolution - 2400 dpi. Thanks to the excellent LED elements, the prints are quite professional in quality. MFPs were supplemented with a touch screen with a full color gamut; it was made with the expectation of "working out of the box."
Up to 18 pages can be printed per minute. In this case, the noise level will be 46-47 dB. The color touch screen has a diagonal of 9.3 cm. The device is made using LED technology; the wired connection is carried out using the high-speed USB 2.0 protocol. You can print on A4 sheets, the memory capacity is 512 MB, and for wireless printing there is no need to connect to an access point.
Black and white laser multifunction device DCP-L5500DNX may be just as good. The 5000 Series comes with advanced paper handling that will suit even the most intense workgroups. A high-capacity toner cartridge is also available to help increase productivity and lower costs. The developers have tried to provide the maximum level of security required for the commercial sector. Supports special printing archiving and flexible certificate management; the creators also thought about the environmental qualities of their product.
Inkjet
If you need to choose a color MFP with CISS and decent characteristics, you need to pay attention to DCP-T710W... The machine is equipped with a large paper tray. The ink supply system is very simple. It prints up to 6,500 pages at full load. This will print 12 images per minute in monochrome or 10 in color.
Connecting over the Net is as easy as possible. The transparent lid allows you to work with the container filling system without unnecessary problems. The likelihood of getting dirty is minimized. The MFP is equipped with a single line LCD display. The designers took care of the ability to quickly troubleshoot all problems based on service messages.
The internal Wi-Fi module works flawlessly. Wireless direct printing is available. The built-in memory is designed for 128 MB. Weight without box is 8.8 kg. The delivery set includes 2 bottles of ink.
Criterias of choice
The selection of an MFP for home and office is actually pretty close. The difference is almost exclusively in the performance requirements of the device. Inkjet models are good for those who want to print photographs and drawings on a regular basis.
But for printing documents on paper, it is better to use laser devices. They guarantee long-term preservation of the text and save resources.
The downside of laser MFPs is that they don't work very well with photographs. If, nevertheless, the choice is made in favor of the inkjet version, it is useful to check if there is a CISS. Even for those who are not going to print very much, continuous ink transfer is quite convenient. And for the commercial sector, this option is most attractive. The next important point is the print format.
For everyday needs and even for the reproduction of office documents, A4 format is often enough. But A3 sheets are sometimes used for business purposes, because it is necessary to take into account the nuances of handling them. A3 format is a must for advertising, design and photography.
For A5 and A6 models, a special order must be submitted; there is no point in acquiring them for private use.
There is a widespread prejudice that the print speed of an MFP important only for offices, and at home it can be neglected. Of course, for those who do not have any time limits, this is really insignificant. However, for a family where at least periodically 2 or 3 people will print something, you need to choose a device with a productivity of at least 15 pages per minute. For students, journalists, researchers and other people who print a lot at home, it is imperative to choose an MFP with CISS. But for an office, even a small one, it is advisable to use a model with a productivity of at least 50 pages per minute.
In home printing, the duplex option is very useful, that is, printing on both sides of the sheet. The work is simplified by the presence of an automatic feeder. The larger the capacity, the higher the printer's performance will usually be. Network connectivity and USB storage options are also very important. Pay attention to design last.
The reputation of the manufacturers is certainly important. But with Brother, as with all firms, you can find unsuccessful models and bad games. It is recommended to give preference to products that have been produced for at least a year. New items are suitable only for principled experimenters.
It is not worth saving, but it is unwise to chase the most expensive products.
User manual
You can connect an MFP to a computer according to the same principle as a regular printer or scanner. It is advisable to use the supplied USB cable. Typically, modern operating systems detect the connected device on their own and are able to install drivers without human intervention. In rare cases, you have to use the included disc or search for drivers on the Brother website. Setting up the all-in-one is relatively straightforward; most often it comes down to installing proprietary software.
In the future, you will only have to set individual parameters for each print or copy session. The company strongly recommends using only original cartridges. When you need to refill them with toner or liquid ink, you should also use only certified products.
If the problem is determined to have occurred after refilling with non-certified ink or powder, the warranty will automatically void. Do not shake ink cartridges. If you find ink on skin or clothing, wash it off with plain or soapy water; in case of contact with eyes, it is imperative to seek medical attention.
You can reset the counter like this:
- include MFPs;
- open the top panel;
- The removed cartridge is “halved”;
- only the fragment with the drum is inserted in its proper place;
- remove the paper;
- press the lever (sensor) inside the tray;
- holding it, close the lid;
- release the sensor at the start of work for 1 second, then press it again;
- hold until the end of the engine;
- open the lid, reassemble the cartridge and put everything back in place.
For a more intuitive instruction on how to reset the Brother counter, see the following video.
This is a very painstaking and not always successful procedure. In case of failure, you must carefully repeat it again. In some models, the counter is reset from the settings menu. Of course, it is advisable to download the scanning program from the official site. If the instructions permit, you can use third-party scanning and file recognition programs. It is undesirable to exceed the established monthly and daily load on the MFP.
Possible malfunctions
Sometimes there are complaints that the product does not pick up paper from the tray. Often the cause of this problem is the excessive density of the paper stack or its uneven layout. Difficulties can also be created by a foreign object that has got inside. A single staple from the stapler is enough for the paper to rest firmly. If this is not the reason, it remains to assume more serious damage.
When the MFP does not print, you need to check if the device itself is turned on, if there is paper and dye in it.Old inkjet cartridges (inactive for a week or more) can dry out and require special cleaning. The problem can also arise due to a failure in the automation. Here are a few more likely problems:
- the inability to scan or print - due to the breakdown of the corresponding blocks;
- difficulties with starting occur more often when the power supply fails or wiring is disturbed;
- "Invisible" cartridge - it is changed or the chip responsible for recognition is reprogrammed;
- squeaks and other extraneous sounds - indicate poor lubrication or a violation of a purely mechanical plan.
