Solid wood shelves
The times of cozy design, filled with original ideas, alterations, restorations, have finally come. Nowadays, few people want an outdated "European-style" renovation, the owners of apartments and private houses are trying to personify the interior, inspired by more relevant scandi, boho, rustic and other styles. And in each of them there are wooden shelves. It only seems at first glance that you can't really play with them in the interior - you can even play with them and even make a beautiful accent on the shelves.
Advantages and disadvantages
Wood is a material whose environmental friendliness is beyond doubt. The leader in the range of materials and interior elements that create coziness. Warm, beautiful, durable, it is actively used in furniture, and in accessories, and in decor.
Solid wood for shelves - what are its advantages:
- natural material, even if it is impregnated with varnishes and other compounds, collects dust much less than plastic or its analogue;
- the tree breathes, does not emit harmful substances into the atmosphere;
- wooden parts are easy to process, including self-processing;
- classic material, to which, one might say, the human eye is adapted - it is visually pleasing in almost any interior;
- it is a very accessible material (if not the most accessible).
Unless in hi-tech and techno, wood is not the preferred solution. In other styles, it is difficult without it.
Are there any downsides to wooden shelves? There are few of them:
- an array can be expensive;
- a lot of waste is generated during production;
- if the shelf is poorly processed, in contact with it, splinters may remain in the epithelium.
If a person looking closely at solid wood shelves wants to reproduce this or that fashionable picture in his home, wooden shelves are really the most convenient in this. And this, by the way, is one of the most inexpensive ways to change the overall look of the interior without radical acquisitions.
Views
This is where the fun begins - the choice. The shelf doesn't have to be hanging on the wall. And if it does hang, then it can also be some kind of original way of fastening. Consider the traditional types of wood shelves.
- Wall mounted. Especially popular recently has become a wooden kitchen shelf, used as an open storage area. It replaces kitchen cabinets, allowing you to make a cozy and warm decor in the kitchen out of dishes and all kinds of spice and grocery jars.
- Book - can be represented by solo shelves or a group of identical elements. They can make up a whole bookcase, but not the one that is on the floor, but the one that is assembled in the form of a shelf or a merger of individual shelves.
- Hinged - differ in the way of fastening. This option can be interestingly beaten in the interior by hanging the shelf on belts or a rope cord, for example.
- Floor standing - based on the name, it is easy to guess that these shelves are on the floor, occupying both the entire wall space and part of it. A great way to zone a space.
You can buy shelves, or you can make yourself, for example, from furniture boards purchased at a building market. You can restore old shelves of samples of Soviet furniture.
Materials (edit)
Wood is a practical and versatile material, very affordable and interesting to work with. But wood is different from wood. If you plan to design the shelf yourself, and a person is a beginner in this business, you should pay attention to wood varieties with a soft structure. These are aspen, pine, alder, linden.The material should be undeformed, with an even outer layer. The drying quality of the boards should not be in doubt.
If noticeable cracks, voids, knots, mold damage are found on the board, it is better not to take this material for making furniture.
Types of wood for creating shelves:
- larch - it is highly resistant to decay, it is not inferior even to oak in safety, but with initial drying, there are frequent cases of wood cracking;
- linden is a soft material of almost white color without expressive texture, it is far from being as resistant to decay as the same larch, not prone to cracking;
- aspen is a cheap species with very light wood, even slightly green, light and soft;
- alder - will be slightly stronger than linden, has almost no texture, is easy to process;
- cedar - heartwood with high resistance to decay and excellent processing qualities;
- ash - solid shelves will be obtained from this tree, practically not prone to deformation, the older the tree, the higher its biostability;
- oak - its massif contains a natural antiseptic, which makes the wood virtually fearless against rotting and fungus, does not tarnish under the influence of ultraviolet radiation.
The wood does not have to be varnished - it can be protonated, painted, stained or waxed. And oil impregnation is also popular now. All this allows you to make the most natural furniture or decor.
Design
The Scandinavian style is the richest in variations in the use of shelves and their design. In addition to the usual patterns and patterns, there are such things as, for example, a shelf for decorating the kitchen - gruttersbak. It can store various spice jars, cups, cutlery, oil bottles. And if you use such a shelf outside the kitchen, it will become an excellent business organizer, in which all the necessary office supplies will definitely not be lost.
Fans of the scandi style should take a closer look at the following design options:
- open shelves in any of the rooms are a platform for decor, both permanent and seasonal, thematic;
- shelves in the form of open boxes, deliberately randomly hung in the media zone;
- shelving in the form of Christmas trees and pyramids;
- shelves in the form of stairs.
The tree can be left in its natural color, or it can be tinted with compositions with a minimum presence of "chemistry".
