Large-fruited raspberry Monomakh's cap (Rubus idaeus) is appreciated by both breeders and amateur gardeners. In most regions of Russia, it does not have time to ripen completely in the second wave of the harvest, but even when grown as an annual plant, it gives quite satisfactory results.
Breeding history of the variety
The variety was bred by the breeder I.V. Kazakov as part of the team of VSTISP employees. He became one of the first in a series of domestic multi-flowering subspecies of garden raspberries. Monomakh's hat was tested in the Bryansk region, at the Kokinsky base. Due to the high susceptibility to infectious diseases, the variety was not submitted for entry into the State Register, it is distributed by amateurs.
Description of the variety
The variety is remontant, the bushes grow up to 150 cm tall. Each forms 3-4 powerful, highly branching shoots, covered with rigid thorns located at the base of the stem. The variety is not prone to overgrowth, gives little overgrowth. Under load, the branches droop slightly.
Lateral shoots grow on the central shoots, 25-30 cm long. Fruit clusters bear 6-8 berries each.
Ripening terms
The first harvest is obtained on July 15-20, the second - from August 20 until the first frost. Fruiting differs in duration.
Yield
2-3 kg of berries can be removed from the bush. In the presence of additional shelter, the yield increases to 5.5 kg.
Berries and their taste
Monomakh's hat is a raspberry variety with a bright characteristic berry aroma. Each of them weighs 5-7 g, has a deep dark red color, elongated blunt-conical shape. The taste is sweet and sour, the pulp is elastic, it is easily separated from the stalk. The berries can withstand transportation. Tasting score - 4.1 points.
Growing features
Cultivation depends on the climatic zone. Planting is possible for plants with an open root system, it is done in early spring or late autumn. Container seedlings are placed in the ground throughout the warm season. The distribution of bushes is carried out in clumps of 3-5 pieces or in rows with a distance of 0.7 m by 2.5 m.In the first year, the root zone requires weeding, and when planting, you should take care of installing trellises or supports.
Site selection and soil preparation
When looking for a place to plant a plant on a raspberry plot, the Monomakh Hat is given the sunniest territories. The cultivar is sensitive to the amount of light. A good place to plant is the south side of the house. In this case, the bushes will be protected from drafts and cold winds, they will begin to bear fruit faster, and there will be no problems with the ripening of the crop.
When choosing a place, it is important to consider which plants were previously on it. Ridges after nightshade crops will not work - from potatoes to eggplants. You cannot plant this variety of raspberries after black currants. But the territories after bulbous plants or strawberries are quite suitable.
Certain requirements are also imposed on the soil. It should be moisture-permeable, loose enough, rich in organic matter. It is not bad to plant green manure a year before, and then dig up the soil. The acidic soil is preliminarily brought back to normal in the fall with the help of dolomite flour, maintaining the recommended standards (1 kg per 3 m2), so as not to harm the delicate root system of plants. Planting in this case is postponed to the spring.
Pruning
Raspberry Monomakh's cap needs control over the formation of shoots. No more than 5-6 strong branches are left per 1 m2. The rest are removed throughout the summer. If you neglect pruning, the plantation will overgrow, the berries are crushed, and the risk of spreading infections will increase. Green shoots are removed with a sharp garden pruner at the very surface of the soil, followed by processing the sections with manganese, garden pitch.
Watering and feeding
Plants of the Shapka Monomakh variety need abundant watering. It is important that the soil at the roots remains slightly moist. Under normal conditions, 1 bucket per week under the root is enough. In extreme heat, the frequency of moisture introduction is increased up to 2-3 times a week.
Top dressing should also be regular. The first occurs at the beginning of summer, repeated - 2-3 times per season. Organic matter is introduced - mullein solution 1: 10, fermented for 3-4 days. The concentrate is diluted 1: 3 relative to the original volume. It is introduced into the soil at the root after abundant watering, 5 liters per 1 m2 of plantings.
Frost resistance and preparation for winter
Raspberry Monomakh's hat is characterized by average frost resistance. The bushes can withstand temperatures down to -25 degrees. In colder regions, autumn root pruning is required at the end of November, before the first snow falls.
Diseases and pests
The variety is not resistant to viral diseases, it is highly susceptible to various infections. As a preventive measure, bushes are shown spring treatment of young shoots with Bordeaux liquid at a concentration of 3%. After 2 weeks, spraying from pests can be carried out. The drug Fitoverm, which belongs to the biological group, has proven itself well.
Unfortunately, raspberries, like other plants, do not bypass various diseases and pests. Only armed with the knowledge and the necessary means for this, you can cope with such troubles. To help the plant, it is very important to be able to recognize the disease in time and begin timely treatment.
Reproduction
The variety does not form root suckers, therefore propagation occurs exclusively by cuttings. Young spring shoots are cut off at the very base. For further use, a segment with 3-4 internodes is left. After that, the cutting is placed for 10-12 hours on a medium with a composition that promotes root formation. After that, they are planted in a fertile substrate under the jar, providing watering throughout the warm season.
Review overview
Many years of experience in the cultivation of raspberries of the Shapka Monomakh variety allows us to confidently judge its properties. Many summer residents have been growing it for more than 15 years, getting bountiful harvests without unnecessary difficulty. The beauty and sweetness of ripe berries is especially appreciated. The variety is often preferred to grow precisely for obtaining fruits in season, for fresh consumption as a dessert. And also experienced summer residents recommend a complete pruning of the bush without fear - young shoots are not long in coming with the onset of spring.
The only significant problem can be considered the susceptibility of bushes to infection by infectious diseases. But gardeners point out that the risks can be reduced by taking preventive measures. When grown in the shade, the susceptibility to disease increases.
