Raspberry Samokhval has always been and will be one of the most popular varieties among amateur gardeners.
Breeding history of the variety
Malina Samokhval was bred by the Russian breeder Vladimir Shiblev. He is also the director of a domestic nursery called "School Garden", located in the Nizhny Novgorod region, in the village of Smirnovo.
In breeding Samokhval, Vladimir was helped by his son Ilya Shiblev, who works as the Commerce Director in the same nursery. Vladimir himself became the author of many successful types of raspberries, such as Caramel and Nizhegorodets. It was from these two varieties, through their controlled crossing, that Shiblev bred Samokhval raspberries. However, this variety originally had a different name. The Nizhegorodets variety had a big drawback - the lack of taste. When breeding Samokhval, Vladimir took this into account, which is why his first name was Nizhegorodets-2. Today it is the second name of this variety.
Recently, the Samokhval raspberry has been included in the State Register of Protected Breeding Achievements.
Description of the variety
Samokhval belongs to the category of universal varieties, that is, those that can be used for any purpose. The difference between this variety is that at a time it ripens 25 berries or more at once. The samokhval has a straight stem, but in the upper part they are more sluggish, hanging down. The thickness of the stems can be different, as a rule, medium or large. At the base, the stem is no thicker than 2 cm. The average value of the plant height is 1.3-1.5 m, however, there are also higher specimens.
At the base there are numerous spines with small curvatures at the ends. The leaves are oval-shaped with a sharp end. Below they are more faded, the upper side, on the contrary, is bright green. When flowering, this variety exudes a pronounced aroma. Has a large root system.
Ripening terms
Raspberry Samokhval begins to ripen after such varieties as the Little Humpbacked Horse, Raspberry Ridge, Nizhegorodets. And sometimes much later, for example, the time difference with the Raspberry Ridge is almost 1 month.
In general, the variety begins to ripen in late August and early September, but sometimes a little later. In warm areas, ripening occurs earlier - in mid-August.
Yield
The Samokhval variety has a high yield. Up to 8 kg are collected from one bush per season. Large-scale cultivation is characterized by different numbers. So, up to 18 tons of raspberries are harvested from one hectare. These indicators work in planting using an inter-row spacing of 3.5 m. If you reduce it to 2 or 1.5 m, you can achieve a yield of as much as 30 tons per hectare.
Berries and their taste
The taste of the berries has improved significantly in comparison with the berries of its predecessor, Nizhegorodets. So, Samokhval raspberries have a dessert taste, with a slight sourness, but a good, bright real raspberry taste. However, it was not possible to reach the taste of Caramel.
By consistency, the berries are juicy and dense, and their weight is about 15-18 g. Color - dark red. The assessment given to Samokhval by the experts is 4.5 points out of 5.
Growing features
Samokhval's shoots are bright green, and after ripening they become light brown. Outside covered with a bloom of wax, have a small fluff. In the event that favorable conditions are created for the growth of shoots, it is possible to get a considerable harvest already in the year of planting. Vigorous growth has been noticed behind the shoots, which can lead to some hassle in terms of regularly removing unnecessary shoots.
Site selection and soil preparation
Despite the many positive aspects of the variety, it is worth planting raspberries in the right and prepared place. Without doing this, you may not achieve any results.
First of all, you need to select the point where the landing will be made. This should be a place well lit by the sun. In terms of air exchange, you need to choose the "golden mean": there should be no shortage of ventilation, but at the same time, drafts are not welcome.
The soil should be loose and light. Clay places are not suitable for Samokhval. A place with a high fertility rate, normal or weak acidity is an excellent option for planting. Loam, sandy loam, or black soil may be suitable as a good soil.
Before planting, the soil must be dug up and fertilized with minerals.
Unfortunately, raspberries, like other plants, do not bypass various diseases and pests. Only armed with the knowledge and the necessary means for this, you can cope with such troubles. To help the plant, it is very important to be able to recognize the disease in time and begin timely treatment.
Reproduction
This aspect is well developed in the Samokhval raspberry variety. With reproduction with the help of shoots, gardeners have no problems. It is enough just to cut off one young shoot and plant it in the prepared soil. In this case, the planting season can be any, not necessarily warm.
Another way is bush propagation. Its essence is that not one shoot is disconnected from the plant, but a whole small bush. The main thing is that for each such new plant there should be at least 4 trunks with active buds.
Raspberries of the Samokhval variety are a good variety of the well-known berry, which is worthy of being in the garden of any person.
Review overview
Gardeners praise the Samokhval variety for its large and tasty fruits, as well as for the minimal care that the bushes require. The only drawback of raspberries is the late appearance of the berries, which becomes an advantage when growing even earlier varieties.
